One interesting fact, is that Monseratt was from Barcelona. She had so much emotion in the song, because she was singing about her home town. There will never be another duet like this. Simply perfection!

When I watch this I cry as 68 year old man it reduces me to tears because it reminds me so much of what we lost with Freddie’s passing so young. Like Karen Carpenter Freddie a true genius had so much more joy to give us as this collaboration truly shows us apart from Queen which will never be replicated.

This is one of Freddie's true masterpieces, used in the Barcelona Olympic games. I just knew it would blow your mind! Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé found out that they were huge fans of each other, and this song cemented a friendship between them that lasted until Freddie's untimely death. There were a host of entries invited for the official song for the games, but once this was entered, any others were competing for 2nd place, and this became the official theme song for the games that year - and rightfully so. All the parts were written by Freddie, instrumental and vocal.

This is the period in time (88) when he'd already been diagnosed, but the world didn't know he was dying. He was starting to look very gaunt, and the press were already asking a lot of questions about his health. In any case, this is one of the rare moments in those last few years of his life where he was still sounding good. He wasn't going to make it to the 92 Olympics, and I think he kinda knew it. So he went all in on this, and made some history here. It wasn't long after this that he all but disappeared from the public spotlight.

@@Mr.Ekshin Bringing the spotlight on Barcelona in 1992 was so great. I was there in beautiful Barcelona during the Games. I saw the Montjuic fountain programmed to this song. Quite the spectacle. I witnessed "our" Dutch Ellen van Langen win the Olympic 800m, and met her later that night. It all so very inspiring and the song brings me back to those special days.

It is nice to see an opera singer react to this duet. Freddie Mercury was an exceptional composer, he created all of the music, that he sang with Montserrat, he sang all of her parts in falsetto, to work out exactly how it should sound. You should listen to Ensueno - Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe from the Barcelona album. That is the one song where Freddie Mercury takes a more operatic approach. I would love to see an opera singer's opinion on that song. The whole Barcelona album is amazing.

I agree with you it's nice to hear from someone who is a proper opera singer and can obviously lend their perspective to the song because this helps give an idea of just how magnificent and incredible Freddie's ability truely was. Yes, he's done wonderful stuff both with Queen and some solo tracks but obviously this is something that is completely different and it's one thing to be passionate and enjoy opera music but it's a different thing to get up on stage and perform it alongside someone who is already quite well established in the genre but Freddie did so and not only that he did it so well that he doesn't really look out of place. I think that without a doubt Freddie deserves his legendary status but above all he had such unbelievable courage and determination. RIP Freddie Mercury. RIP Monserrat Caballe.

Here's a little backstory to this song. - 1987, Freddie was at home since after finding out that he had AIDS, he stopped touring with Queen and he didn't know what to do with himself. Out of the blue he exclaimed "God, I wish I could have gone to see (Legendary opera singer) Luciano Pavarotti!" And his long term boyfriend Jim went "What's keeping you, take a plane to Italy and go watch him!" - And so Freddie began to attend opera performances left and right. But it was when he saw Montserrat Caballé live that he stood up and exclaimed "That's the best voice I ever heard!" He made a few calls to her management and met her. The two got on like a house on fire. - But when the subject of recording an album together came to be, Freddie found out how closed minded the Opera world is, NONE of the symphony orchestras he approached wanted to work with him since he was a lowly pop singer. So, Freddie went "Well, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!" and recorded almost all of the music himself using synthesizers and samplers.. - Montserrat for her part said that she enjoyed the recording process, Freddie and Jim were perfect English gentlemen and treated her like royalty. But her fellow Opera singers weren't so accepting. Singer Ingrid Bergman condemned Montserrat for having done the album and snidely remarked after hearing about Freddie's death that he "Must have screamed himself to death." - Fast forward to the 2012, Queen's "We will rock you" musical was doing really well and the musical arranger of the show, Stuart Morley, went "Now let's record that album with a PROPER orchestration." and basically re-recorded the entire album using the London Symphony Orchestra, much like how Freddie had intended it to be.

Freddie Mercury was such a special talent and most definitely one of a kind. It's so fitting that this song was used as the theme to the 1992 Olympic Games in the city. It serves as very fitting tribute to such a wonderful and lovely man. A real musical genius. Tribute also to Monserrat Caballe who has also passed away now, but even her daughter still speaks of how warmly her mother enjoyed working with Freddie and his friendship was something that she treasured.

Freddie wrote the song without her because she was starting in an Opera. He had always loved Opera and the band was on a break. She said she had always been a singer who concentrated on singing perfectly without the emotion. She said Freddie showed her how to express herself with feeling, Barcelona is where she was born. They did play it at the Barcelona Olympics in a hologram because Freddie was already dead by then.

There was an interview done by the BBC in Montserrat's home several years after Freddie had passed away and the interviewer asked Montserrat what the biggest difference was between singing with Freddie and singing normal opera songs. She immediately replied "freedom" and then went on to explain that as an opera singer she had very little freedom with how she sang. The conductor was responsible not only for the orchestra but also for how she sang the song and to be a successful opera singer you had to follow how and what the conductor wanted. Freddie on the other hand left a lot of how she sang her parts up to her. Of course there are the parts in harmony and that requires they blend together which they did beautifully but there were other parts (especially in the song "The Golden Boy") where Freddie was singing the main vocal and she did not have an obvious vocal part. She asked Freddie what she should be doing at those parts and he told her to ad-lib. That was something very foreign to her and it took her awhile to get comfortable doing so but she said it was the most wonderful freeing feeling she ever had while singing. You can see the joy on her face in the video of "The Golden Boy". She is having the time of her life in that video and the respect and love the two of them had developed for one another really comes through in that video. Since you have already reacted to this version of "Barcelona" on your channel, you might also want to privately watch the live version of "Barcelona performed at La Nit in 1988. They had a much larger choir and orchestra in that version and that version is live (you can hear the audience, fountains and fireworks in the background). Just search La Nit in KZbin's search box and the first video in the results should be the remastered version. Don't miss out on reacting to "The Golden Boy" which is a wonderful song but is worth the reaction just because of how much fun Montserrat is having.

I like opera songs, but not entire operas all at once. It's like my auditory sense gets saturated and I start having trouble focusing on the notes. It just starts turning into a wall of sound for me. The same goes for most club music. After a while the 120 beats per minute is all I hear with a blur of noise behind it.

It's the best reaction to this duet I've ever seen! You watch and feel by all your heart it's so so beautiful and it's precious because an opera singer knows music well I suggest you to watch the golden boy too stay safe

Maggie, as always depends on what is going on. I am disabled so I am available. But life does get in the way sometimes. If I see it I will join in. Thanks for asking. :)

Freddie had idolised her, and they had been life long friends for many years, even to producing a full duet album. she was devastated when she lost her close friend of many years.

the thing that made this so great is the huge amount of mutual respect they gave and showed eachother... you should check live version infront of the huge crowd.

High camp, done with great love and panache. I think they spent a lot of time together understanding each other's craft. Montserrat was famously picky about what she would and would not do, and with whom. Those ascents to floated pianissimo high notes are the calling cards of her operatic voice, and they are fully honoured in Freddie's composition. He knew how good she was. They are unlikely couple, but there was real affection there. It's hilarious and touching all at once to see this high-priestess of bel canto (and an incomparable Norma in her day) wigging-out and swapping out the 'Casta' to be a 'Rock Diva', and doing a few Freddie hand gestures that even in opera would be considered over-the-top. Lovely frock too - and another thing she could be picky about too 😲

I've read in a comment that in an interview Montserrat gave, she said it was the happiest she'd ever been after she met Freddie, and she was there for him till the end....

I admittedly thought it would be the official video as I didn't know this existed. Nice review. As soon as I saw you review this I thought you would enjoy it.

Thankyou so much for reacting and bringing your love of opera and expertise to this piece. The first time I heard this in 1992 was for the opening of the Barcelona Olympics. I just sat listened opened mouthed and had goosebumps. Honestly left me shaking a little. I never knew music could do that before. I loved Queen and Freddie before this but after I was also started listening to Opera and especially anything with Montserrat Caballe. I'm 55 now and this music will stay with me to the end. Love and peace to you from the UK.

This was Freddie Mercury's great desire to sing with his diva, I recommend you listen to the whole album because it's fantastic. Also I believe that at minute 7:23 of your video Freddie Mercury has surpassed his diva in power.
