Much of Marc's "sounds like Freddy" is just a happenstance of physiology. It wasn't til after years of hearing folks say "wow, you sound like Freddy Mercury" that he even started to listen to Queen. He's a natural mimic...he "does" a lot of other singers very well. But after being chosen to front the Queen tribute band, he naturally made the distince effort to sound like Freddy as much as possible :) To hear more of his "own" voice, you might want to do a comparison with his and Tom Waits version of "Take it With Me" Just a thought :) Marc is almost exclusively self taught...by listening to the radio, picking out bits he liked and trying to figure out how to do it.

I always find it amusing how many comments on Marc's "non Queen" covers still say he sounds like Freddie. Marc has a great ear for finding similar phrasing and styles to replicate instrumentation and vocals. "Playing by ear" as a method of learning singing and playing instruments (as opposed to classical training) doesn't seem to be recognized as much as it once was. That's a talent/skill on its own right.

I’m lucky enough to live in Alabama where Marc joins the Black Jacket Symphony several times a year to cover “night at the opera” cover to cover. They recently played an outdoor COVID-friendly gig a few miles from my house:) There’s so much talent around and I can’t wait- hear me- I. Cannot. Wait. Until ye olde plague relents and thusly sets us loose on the world to watch live music again. I’m ready to get sweaty with my cohorts and dance all night and go home, ears ringing, hearing only the vowels of words spoke to me, and skin buzzing from the amplifiers I stood too close to.

I just love how this series has made Sam sing a lot more along with the songs... So good! Freddie's instrument was one of a kind... Adam make a good job not trying to initiate it, by taking the song to hinself and giving a new seasoning to it... Marc also make a good job by trying to imitate Freddie, for that's his goal: to reproduce the song... As Sam always says, we all have just different instruments and good or better is all about our goal while singing...

Freddiephiles are so obnoxious. And FYI Roger and Brian disagree with you ON THE SINGING QUESTION. For them it's ADAM, ALWAYS ADAM. Especially considering Freddie disrespected and destroyed his voice very early on and was unable to EVER do the extensive difficult performances that Lambert does hundreds of times in a row. OR doing 100 takes for one line in a studio album. But have fun pretending he seriously cared about his "VOCALS" in those shows lmfao.

It'd be really cool to see you analyze Marc Martel singing Nessun Dorma. I think he achieves a pretty decent classical sound for someone who doesn't primarily sing classical music, and it'd be nice to have your input, since you have a more formal classical background.
@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with Marc's Nessun Dorma is that he is copying Pavarotti. People who don't listen to opera don't realize, that Pavarotti actually performs Nessun Dorma in a subpar manner. Nessun Dorma was a role written for a dramatic or spinto tenor, the highest note only goes to B4, because the song is about power. Pavarotti was a lyric tenor who became a bit tired of the youthful highly romantic roles you find within the lyric tenor fach. The roles for dramatic tenors are generally more mature and powerful. Pavarotti pushed himself into these roles. This is not Marc's fault, but like Pavarotti he also just a lyric tenor, that should likely just stay away from Nessun Dorma. Compare Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma against a real dramatic spinto tenor: Pavarotti (no offence against Pavarotti he was a great lyric tenor but not suited for heavy roles): kzbin.info/www/bejne/paWrd4GurZenZq8 Franco Corelli - Nessun Dorma: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXaXdpp_fJWjm9k
@bharp4390
@bharp4390 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic Yes, I am aware that the role of Calaf is better-suited for heavier tenor voices. In the case of Marc Martel, though, I'm not really worried about that. Marc Martel performed the song in the privacy of his own home, not in an opera house, so fach is irrelevant. and I am more interested in the modifications he makes in his own vocal mechanism when he's singing more classically-oriented songs.
@bharp4390
@bharp4390 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic And just because Pavarotti's voice is considered too light for the role of Calaf, doesn't mean that his performances of Nessun Dorma are "subpar." Sure, the role wasn't written for his type of voice, but who actually cares about that when you're listening to the song isolated from the rest of the opera.

I've seen Marc Martel a few times back in the day with his old Christian band "Downhere". I had never heard of these guys and one day, they happened to be the "praise band" at the church I'd been attending, playing a few of their own songs. Apparently, they would do that, go on a tour of bigger churches in the northwest US and play a regular show in the evening at the same place. Well, they were incredible and I say this as someone who can't really stand most Christian artists. And Marc's range meshed well with the other singer who took a lot of lower range stuff.

I love listening to the original Queen recordings and live concerts and I also love Queen + Adam Lambert. Honestly I really like the way Adam performs the Queen songs. On STL and KQ Adam has turned them into awesomely fun songs to watch and listen to. On WWTLF and TSMGO Adam has turned them into masterclass performances. I think it is incredible that one band has been lucky enough to have two amazingly talented frontmen. Freddie who helped create a timeless catalog of music that has influenced multiple generations, and Adam who has helped keep Queen as one of the best live performance bands in the world.

99% was Freddie's voice, Marc was used where they had no original recordings like Happy Birthday, Smile audition and Love of My Life. They recorded a lot of stuff but ended up having enough of Freddie's original vocals to not need most of it. variety.com/2019/artisans/news/queen-freddie-mercury-1203131746-1203131746/

I have gotten to see both Marc Martel w/ Black Jacket Symphony and Adam Lambert w/ Queen in concert and they are both amazing! Freddie was the one who set the standard obviously and I was never able to see him. However, my opinion is that Adam is one hell of a showman and tells you he's never going to be Feddie f'n Mercury. He has amazing technique and knows how to play his audience like a fine tuned violin. The end of his somebody to love in Nashville was some sort of breath control sorcery. Marc is phenomenal and has amazing presence but he's definitely more of a mimic and that was him the entire concert. He doesn't have the same stage presence or fine tuned artistry.

Oh, Angela! What artistry are we talking about here? Adam holding one note for 15 seconds? LOL You are easily impressed! I also have seen both Marc and Adam live multiple times. Marc is a fully-fledged musician who is busy creating music on stage live, Adam struts around , grabs his crotch and wails. Marc all the way! Again and again! He lacks absolutely nothing! The man is an astounding singer and musician! Who cares if he peacocks around batting his eyelashes!

I agree with what you say about Adam at the beginning. I feel the same way that if he tried to be Freddie they wouldn’t be successful because there is only one Freddie and he is irreplaceable. I love that Adam has made each Queen song his own and I personally think Freddie would be proud of Adam

Everything except actual music skills. Lambert is a variety singer, which is nothing but karaoke. Who cares about costumes and make up where music is concerned? How well he plays instruments? Oh, well… he doesn’t… play… ANY instrument. How well does he compose? He doesn’t compose music bc he is musically illiterate, same as the majority of wannabe C-lebrities who go on reality shows to promote their hobby-talent. How well he sings? Listen to his a cappella videos!

@@papabearM3 Come on M3 stop all your bloody rubbish. Regarding Queen, Freddie is and always will be number one, he is totally irreplaceable. MM is nothing but a Freddie imitator you like him so keep enjoying him and stop bad mouthing Adam as you always do. Adam not only sings for QAL but when he does he sings Queen songs his own way and does a brilliant job, you put him down all the time WHY? Adam is a World Class Singer and has a very successful Solo Career, yes he has been a judge on The Voice, and? why not he was asked to do it, he is making opportunities for himself. He sings a capella brilliantly will I link Nessum Dorma to you again. Yes he doesn't play an instrument he doesn't have to his VOICE says it all. He co writes music the same as your chum who hasn't written anything since 2014. You prefer who you like and I will do the same.

@@xmasbunnyscotland5355 Do you miss me, or something? LOL Who is trying to replace Freddie? Not Marc. Adam stands in Freddie’s place, but most certainly is INCAPABLE of replacing him simply bc Freddie was a consummate musician, composer, lyricist, arranger, producer, he orchestrated, and led the band, besides fronting it and singing like a wild exotic bird! What of that can Adam do? Adam sings. Like a white boy who fancies himself as an R&B singer thinking he fooled everyone. At least Marc knows how to do everything Freddie could, musically speaking - he ALSO plays multiple instruments, composes, write thoughtful lyrics, arranges, orchestrates, produces, mixes, beside fronting and leading his own phenomenal band. Can’t argue with that. Call him whatever you want. Facts speak for themselves.

@@xmasbunnyscotland5355 And I know you are proud of Adam’s Nessun Dorma, but it’s not very good: he is off pitch and whiny and nasal. Just no. If you want to hear a better version of the aria as coming from a non-opera singer, go listen to Marc’s version. At least, his is closer to a proper squillo. He sings it in a lovely rounded tone and in perfect pitch. Ciao

@@papabearM3 Don't flatter yourself darling why the hell would I miss an envious jealous troll like you and that's all you are M3. What's this video about? As far as I am concerned there will never be any comparison, Freddie was one of a kind and is totally irreplaceable MM imitates him all the time Adam is totally different he sings always as himself. I DON'T CARE about MM he can play a million instruments,, never in a month of Sundays can he ever take Freddie's place but he keeps trying, only you like him that's your choice. Stop bad mouthing Adam you are pathetic, he has an unbelievable voice and can sing any genre that's how super talented he is, he DOESN'T sing like anyone else, he is ADAM LAMBERT who has a once in a lifetime voice, your chum can only dream that he would ever sound like him. As far as QAL is concerned Adam was employed as their Lead Singer only nothing else, he has proved time and time again that he was the right choice, he is not a replacement for Freddie, this is a new Era for them and Adam has singlehandedly help them make the biggest Rock Comeback in History, you my friend are adamant in putting not only him but also Brian and Roger down. Don't bother thinking that I'm going to keep arguing with you, I've said my piece and stick by what I have said. I'm sure you'll have something else to say but sorry I ain't listening.
