You might not care but diction is crucial in Opera music and the vocal teachers are right to criticise Adam for this. I love Adam's voice and I will even say he's currently the greatest male vocalist in the world, however that does not mean he is immune to constructive criticism when he gets it wrong. That's how we learn from our mistakes.

I fell in love with Adam's voice literally the night he made his audition debut on American Idol. I could tell instantly that this was a major talent. What's really interesting about this is that here we have a 40 year old man who studied opera for one year, I believe as a teenager, and has since spent the rest of his career singing pop and rock, including a lot of what some might call "extreme" singing. I can only imagine that had he chosen to pursue an operatic career, and had further training and language coaching, he could well have become one of the leading operatic tenors of his generation. The voice itself is absolutely gorgeous, and his vocal technique strikes me as really solid. If it weren't, I don't believe his voice would have withstood so many years of singing "balls to the wall," as it were, the way he has. It sounds clean, fresh, and powerful, with great resonance and squillo. I've heard live performances of Turandot in major opera houses where the Calaf didn't sound NEARLY as good as he sounds here, with what I'm reading was virtually no rehearsal, and a fairly impromptu decision to add this abridged rendition of the aria to the program during sound check. Amazing.

This was brilliant. So happy to see both of you reacting to Adam’s gorgeous version of Nessun Dorma. Adam was singing this during the sound check before their show that evening. Brian asked him to sing it during the show. No rehearsal or music for 3/4 of the performance!!! His breath control is amazing!! This man is truly in a league of his own. He can literally sing anything and make it his own and nails it!!

Sorry not to be rude but Adam's diction wasn't great and pointing that out is not a personal attack on Adam. He's a great vocalist but diction is incredibly important in the opera world and professional opera singers have every right to criticise when a performance is not up to scratch and I'm sorry but this wasn't. He's an incredible vocalist but he is not an opera singer.

It was something decided last minute as homage to the italian audience during the 2 gigs in Bologna. If it would have been a "real" opera's performance, with all the due rehearsal, surely thw pronunciation and everything else would have been perfecrionated. Thank you for this video. Adam Lambert is one of a kind and he can sing anything. I have seen him in concert solo and with Queen, he is amazing. When I saw him in Oslo, Norway back in 2010 I was standing right in front of him in first row and I have NEVER - as in NEVER - seen or heard anything like ADAM. I was hypnotized by him and his present. He's like a magnet with so much power.... not only his out of this world voice but also his hole person. Before the concert I met him and we had a little talk. He was the sweetest guy, one big smile and is a good hugger.

@@lararoostalu9318 the Zs and doubles are slightly faulty, as Sam suggested. But this is actually looking for the needle in the haystack. I clearly remember how surprised I was to hear him articulate the words incredibly well and clearly. Especially the Rs! It is so rare to hear an Anglo-phone pronounce the Rs this good! In general, it is a very good Italian, definitely above average and so unexpected! He just needs to learn how to pronounce “Grazie” (thanks) [ˈgrattsjE] correctly 🤣 which is very commonly and mistakenly pronounced [grattsi] but we very much love him nonetheless 🤣❤️

Dr. Mark Reynolds was kind enough to answer my question re Adam Lambert's singing style/technique on his song "Soaked" from his first album. If you don't already know 4-months or so after American Idol he goes off on a worldwide tour of 70 cities, on 5 continents. And, the opening night concert was filmed live - you can buy the DVD. Here is Dr. Reynolds reply, "I would probably describe it as mix of pop, baroque tenor largo aria, a touch of baroque countertenor, a touch of music theater … but mostly just some lovely balanced easy singing that explored the aspirate and glottal spectrum of vocal adduction and played with vibrato/straight-tone a bit. I love this style where you aren’t really sure what you are listening to put it is compelling and beautifully executed.? Thanks again for answering y question!

What you may not know is that Adam was sent to Earth by the beings of Planet Fierce, who determined that Earthlings needed more joyous music in their lives. Fiercians have 3 lungs and sing all day and all night long. To the dismay of Adam's Earthling father, who claims to have found him in a basket on the doorstep, Adam did not exhibit any propensity for sports but preferred to play dress-up and experiment with his mom's make-up. His parents finally enrolled Adam in musical theater classes where he was most happy to spread the joy of song. He studied opera for a short time but discovered that rolling his r's caused him to become tongue-tied. He found his calling on American Idol and later with Queen and has been spreading musical joy ever since.❤

From the moment Adam walked into his American Idol audition and slayed Bohemian Rhapsody he had me as a fan! I faithfully tuned in every single week to see what brilliance he was going to come up with next. His Mad World performance was absolutely exquisite and haunting - I remember sitting there watching in awe. Couldn't care less that he didn't end up winning - he's hands down the winner in my book! Adam had a year of opera singing training in his high school years. I was at the concert in Bologna - at the barrier in front of it and my video has exceptional sound. The performance was a tribute to the opera's homeland.

Tuning in from BC Canada I was so excited to hear Adam sing Opera. I bet that Brian and Roger encourage Adam's Music. I had goose bumps listening to Adam sing Opera. I saw Queen and Adam Lambert in 2014 in Vancouver. I screamed for 3 hours. I drove home to Kelowna and watched the concert on youtube. I wanted to go when they came back to Vancouver in 2020 but tickets were $500.00 on the floor.

An Adam Lambert fan here. FYI. (1) His parents put him in opera training as a teenager. Didn't "stick" but he probably got some basics. (2) I saw a recent Q&A with Adam where someone suggested he put it in his set list. He said, no way. Can't remember the detail - but essentially that for him singing that way takes too much energy and would potentially take away from the full concert performance over time. My interpretation, he is going to take care of his voice and do what makes his heart sing.

Thats what people find hard to grasp. Opera is insanely difficult and draining and anyone who can do it well yet appear as if they are putting in no effort is a different breed. Pavarotti was a prime example and his manager even complained and told him he had to at least attempt to make it look like it was more of an effort for him to sing that way 🤣

I think it's great you guys reacted to this when I first heard it I actually wasn't surprised because he's classically trained and he just has a tremendous amount of power and resonance in his voice so for me him singing opera is awesome. The more interesting thing to me is that he has been asked a million times to do some classical pieces and he has emphatically said he would not ever sing classical pieces so it's great that he veered off and gave us this little snippet of what he sounds like in his classical voice and the truth is even in some of his pop songs he uses a classical sound from time to time. Be great to hear him do more of it but he doesn't seem that interested at the end of the day we'll see great to see you guys hope to see you again soon.

The only words he is not pronouncing perfectly are Dorma (the first d sounds english) and speranZa/stanZa. However it is very common that non-Italian mother-tongue opera singers make these little imperfections. So, as Italian, and great Adam’s fan, no, I actually loved this from the first to the last second. I also compared with Pavarotti and could appreciate Adam even more by listening to both versions.

It was quite lovely, but yes, to be opera you must be able to project OVER the orchestra, and most orchestra in Italy are quite large. However, I agree completely that Adam had a lovely vibrato throughout and did a great job, considering it is very hard for a pop singer to actually sing opera, just as Pavarotti never quite sounded right while singing “pop”. Bravo to Adam Lambert for singing Nessun Dorma in Italy!

He’s not singing with an orchestra, so you can not know what he would sound like if he were. And he’s not in an opera house either, whose acoustics are specifically designed for opera singers. Adam is in a huge stadium of 20,000 fans. That’s quite a different type of venue.

Some interesting context. The set list for the Q+AL performance in Bologna BEFORE Adam sang Nessun Dorma was Now I'm Here, Hammer To Fall, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, and Don't Stop Me Now. Listening to the explanation from these voice teachers that vocal technique is very different for Pop and Opera makes the fact that Adam switched techniques so quickly makes his singing of N D all the more impressive. From Rock to Opera within minutes!

No, you don’t switch techniques from song to song, you switch styles, i e switch focus from one placement to another, dynamics, texturizing, etc. Adam sings everything, including ND, in a pop style, which is easier, but shows lack of stylistic versatility.

@@lararoostalu9318 I am trying to educate you, dumberts, a little about music and “how it works,” so that you don’t spout all sorts of nonsensical rubbish presenting it as facts. Adam mixes up styles (not techniques) using same pop “techniques” bc he doesn’t know better. He ends up singing in pop style regardless of what he sings. It’s not original, it’s basically a bag of tricks style that is the easiest to master. And you, his admirers promote it as though it is something special. It is not. Adam is a talented guy and should take music seriously bc he could become a musician and perhaps a good one some day, but I don’t think he cares about music much nor does he seem to care about excelling or he would AT LEAST learn this aria properly and rehearse it to sound someone consistent. Oh well…

He has some pronunciation issues with the Italian, but it sounds better than when Pavarotti tried to sing pop songs in English- “I Leaff my Hearta in San Francisco” comes to mind.

I actually went and listened to Pavarotti singing this and when you compare them side by side, of course Luciano makes Adam look a little amateur, but this is really quite astonishing to me. I can't think of any other rock/pop singer who could pull this off. He went full voice on the high notes when I expected him to back off or cover them to make them easier to sing. He just went pedal to the metal. A very courageous thing to do in Italy, in the birthplace of opera, especially with no rehearsal or pre-planning. It was literally decided that evening during the soundcheck.

Speaking of covered sound, there are several Pavarotti videos here with his Masterclass lectures, demonstrations and evaluating and instructing students on techniques including covered sound which he spends a great amout of time on. "a noble sound instead of a strangled sound". :) I especially love when he shows students how to jump in before the first note and how to keep the voice effect until the orchestra breaks - then explains the story of the opera to drive it home to the student why it's so important to tell the story.

My OG gay icon - his performance of who wants to live forever at the Isle of Wight festival needs to be checked out. It's one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Love your reactions always

I’m surprised that I didn’t see the back story in the comments or that you didn’t mention it. During the day 1 sound check in Bologna, Adam was just messing around and started singing this cover like he learned it during his vocal training as a teenager. The band, producers, and crew were totally blown away. After the sound check, the band was talking and decided to do it during the show as a tribute to Bologna and opera. They rehearsed it a little bit so that Brian and the rest of the band could attempt to figure out their parts. That is why almost all of the performance from night 1 is without any, or very little, accompaniment. If you watch the videos from night 2 the band does a little more.

He was plenty loud. You can't hear the instruments over his voice. Normally, when he's singing rock the relative sound of the instruments is much louder. He has to use a mic because it's an arena. No one sings without a mic in an arena. He did skip some words before the finale I did go back and compare Adam to Pavarotti. It seemed to me like Pavarotti was using much more head voice, while Adam was able to bring more chest into it.

Easly Pavarotti is an opera singer, so he was able to manage the passaggio better than Adam. Moreover his voice was filled of squillo, so his high B seemed higher an with more head voice. Also you have not to forget that Pavarotti was a light tenor, if you listen to Franco Corelli o Mario Del Monaco they are way "darker" and louder than Pavarotti or Adam

The most interesting item in your review for me was that Adam didn't extend his tongue out of his mouth on the high notes the way he does with everything else when reaching for those notes. Do you have a theory as to why he might feel he needs the extra extension on all his other music? And why he doesn't need it in this opera piece?

When Adam sticks his tongue out it's usually for the very high notes (5th Octave), belting technique, that wouldn't work for the classical sound and the highest note in this is B4 so it's not necessary.

Adam received training as a leggero tenor early on in his career! It is far more audible in his musical theatre recordings before American Idol.

@@valmacclinchy Yeah I know he's said he rejected the "proper" way to sing when he wanted to learn how to do the rock scream high notes and his teacher said you can't actually teach that, but I doubt he would deny knowing what a leggiero tenor was if he knew. It's likely it never came up when he had lessons, it's possible that he is but you'd have to hear him doing a lot of classical music to classify him properly, and since he didn't pursue a classical career it doesn't really matter what he is for the kind of music he normally performs.
