Remarkable footage for 1910. And an AMAZING advance in technique and skill in the 13 years since Fitzsimmons KO’d Corbett. This actually resembles BOXING as we came to know and love it. McFarland and Welsh were considered THE consummate scientific boxers of their day. Notice how the fighters break their own clinches, since the referee only entered the ring in the UK when things got “out of hand.”

I am related to Packey McFarland. He was my great grandmothers sister's son. He is also ranked in the boxing Hall of Fame as one of the 50 greatest boxers of all-time. Never got a chance to fight for a title as amazing as that sounds. 106 wins, 1 loss and 6 draws. Not too shabby.

Many see him as the greatest boxer never given the chance to fight for the world title. Do you have any information about him outside boxing?

You are naive, they have very good technique, what you see is a black and white film with fewer photos per second what makes it look fast and awkward, where boxers had smaller and open gloves, so they don't cover up as much and moved more and can clinch easier so they grapple more. The rules where different. You see something unusual and you make the conclusion they dont know how to fight but actuelly their technic is very developped

Boxing has changed over the years, their style then is certainly nothing like it is today. I don't think it's fair to say "if I was back then using boxing techniques from today I'd win" because you would have 100+ years of boxing technique and knowledge that these guys don't. Plus if you were around back then, you would be boxing exactly the same way they are because that's all they knew...
