Nothing stopping you. Buy the flight and then just use public transport to get around Western Europe cheaply.
@RamblingRuters6 ай бұрын
As an American, I lived in Germany for 6yrs (military) & depending on your budget, you can make it a cost savings trip. As was mentioned the public transportation system is leaps & bounds better than the U.S. has, cheap too. Me and my wife took trains (bahnhof) with some into Paris, Austria, etc and had a nice relaxing day exploring and came back the same day. I haven't been over for a few years now however, I'd definitely go back and enjoy all of Europe. Cheers and remember you only have one life and time is finite, just enjoy it with those special people in your life.

@sloht40616 ай бұрын
The architecture, scenery, cyclists just riding around. i wish there was a way to see it without every single tourist either turning it into a dank pit or just overcrowding it. I went during a summer trip a few years ago and I just remember being high, sitting near the canal, peacefully watching the water to drift by as the canal boats chugged past. I love Amsterdam, even without the weed, it's beautiful

I grew up and used to work in Amsterdam, but somehow ended up in Northampton UK 😥 and seeing this makes me want to go back instandly. Most classic cars that you come across are converted to run on LPG, which will reduce the amount of tax you have to pay and is cleaner for the enviroment. nice vid thanks 😎
@ce17ec6 ай бұрын
Most of the bikes are locked, but with a simple wheel lock, the circular lock beneath the saddle. These are on almost every Dutch bike but not very common in the UK. These locks are very simple in use and take only 2 seconds to lock or unlock. When you use a bike for every moment of transport that is much more convenient then a U-lock or chain lock.

As a Dutchman living in New Zealand, this brings back some fond memories of Amsterdam and its culture. Great job, cheers.👍

Freddie, love your enthusiasm and positivity for even the smallest things. Thanks for your view of Amsterdam. Hello to Monika!
@vast0015 ай бұрын
The bikes are locked only not with a chain lock or something like that. Most bikes have a rear wheel lock underneath the saddle, when the key is not in this lock then the bike is locked. Unlocked you wil have the key in this lock, so which means you are biking with the key in this lock.

Amsterdam is actually a planned city from the moment it stopped being a fishing village. It was planned to flourish in trade, so city hall taxed on width to give as many houses as possible canal access. The merchant would typically live there with his nuclear family and have storage for the goods on one or two top floors. That's also why they lean forward and have a hook. The Dutch were wealthy enough to afford the huge windows, and it does get dark early here in autumn and winter, but the windows also saved weight on the soggy soil. Another brilliant foresight for it's day were the mandatory gardens in the back that exist untill today. They already knew a city needed green spaces. The public parks are mostly 19th and early 20th century, a time of city expansion and very interesting architecture too. Check the "Amsterdamse school" (of architecture), a kind of art deco mostly in brick.

The small cars you are referring to are actually like mobility scooters and are taxed as such. Obviously, they come with limitations like speed, etc. Basically, they are 4 wheel motorcycles and enjoy some exceptions on where they can and cannot be driven. The Carver does not classify as such a vehicle. It is more like a 3-wheeled motorcycle. Top Gear famously tested one in 2003

True. I always tell foreigners to just ask directions to the 'eye.' That works. 'IJ' is related to 'Ae,' 'Ee' or 'Die.' (pronounced Dee) in the (West-) Frisian dialect, all of which mean 'water'.

Freddie, I’ve just bought the By City roadster in a classic green colour. It’s a simply superb helmet. Fits so well, the lining is comfortable. The visor stays shut via 2 strong magnets that really keep the wind noise to a minimum. In my opinion it’s as good as the Bell bullit if not better. Monika will not be disappointed with it.

You guys should definitely come back and then make a really nice motorbike trip towards Enkhuizen. You start your journey just outside Amsterdam in a small village called Durgerdam. Then you can drive along the dike that hold the water of the Markermeer where it should stay. Through Uitdam and Monnickendam you will end up in Volendam, which is a beautiful harbor village. Everybody has a unique front door entering their house. Still following the dike you get to Hoorn with a lovely shopping center in very small streets. Last but not least wil be Enkhuizen.

You can park your motorcycle anywhere as long as it's not blocking access. Where you parked your bike is fine. The biggest problem is that once you've parked up, everyone else thinks that's a great idea and so parks their bike, motorbike around you. Sometimes you might find that you can no longer access your bike because you're surrounded by other bikes! But on bike crime, a lot of bikes are stolen. Bike locks are usually integrated into the bike itself, at the rear wheel. Very few people use D locks or chain locks in the Netherlands.

I love those carvers, used to work there too for a little while. Awfully expensive for the practicality tbh, but i'm convinced they can't really do more to cut costs. Over here an unlocked bike usually means the owner forgot to lock it or it's a stolen bike that is dumped or left for later use. Bike theft is very common. Little update my old coworker just sent me: Carver applied for bankrupty, they had a couple of quality issues according to the article he sent me.

Classic cars got a road tax break for many years, which made it attractive to convert them to the much cleaner burning and cheaper LPG. You're likely not to drive much living in Amsterdam anyway, so that is a good option if for those with an interest in classic cars. Citroen has always been huge in the Netherlands when it was still weird, biggest market after France itself. Maybe also because of the suspension, since we have to cross Belgium to get to France.
