Freddy Gardner and his Mess Mates were a small group that made a number of discs for the Decca Music While You Work series in 1943-44, Gardner being released from his Army duties to do so.
Abe Waters was Australian, from Perth. He travelled to the UK via Singapore in the early-mid 1930s, but in around 1930s played with Theo Waters and his Knickerbockers in Perth. In the UK he played piano with Lew Stone, and the Madame Tussaud's dance band.
Music While You Work started as BBC radio programmes in 1940, with the music being up-beat and quite low-key to encourage greater production but not to distract. Later, Decca created discs that could be played in factories at any time, carefully recreating the feel of the broadcasts. Most of the MWYW discs carried special black and white labels, but this relatively early issue has the regular Decca label with "Music While You Work series" over the titles.
