Freddys problem was he trusted the players too much. He asked Cook if he could handle centre and Cook said yes. But of course he would. Fittler was a nuts player who could probably cover almost every role on the field to at least club standard and the backline to Origin standards. Cook isnt that calibre. Who knows if that was Freddy believing him or the other selectors.

Tommy Turbo tore a pec in the first couple of minutes, Cook had played center before and there wasn't really another option. 4 on the bench means you can't cover every position if you are playing 2 hookers. The toads were also playing 2 hookers so lucky for them they didn't have an injury I suppose?

Despite the results over the last two years, I thought Freddy has done a great job as NSW coach. I mean, he has won 3 series- that's more than the previous coaches in the modern era.

Context is important, though. Previous NSW coaches in the recent past had to go up against Thurston, Cronk, Smith, and Slater. Those players are arguably the best players at their positions in the history of the game. Freddy has had much better talent at his disposal than the NSW teams of the past but has struggled to maximise it. Now QLD are pretty much just as talented, so it could be a rough few years for NSW again.

Valentine Holmes, Hamiso Tabuai-Fiddow, Murray Taulagi, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, David Fifita, Jerimiah Nanai, Moe Fotuaika. 7 out of the 17 players for QLD last year are polynesian players eligible to play for other nations. Paul Gallen's idea that QLD are better because poly players in NSW aren't choosing origin is a problem with NSW, not with poly players.

C’ mon Freddy, it’s not a 12 month job, it might get talked about a lot, but it’s three games at a stretch, over 3months max. A couple of get together then into camp. Gus comments of a re-fresh is too true, for NSW, it’s a season earlier. Even if Freddy won the series in 2024, a coach change would be inevitable.

The reason Origin has turned out the way it has is because Greg Inglis didn't play for his state of origin and played for Queensland instead gifting the Maroons a million-win streak and unbalancing the dynamics of the competition. I hope the league never makes him immortal for doing that.
