Thank you Don and a little about Freddy. Freddy was lead guitar for Paul Revere and The Raiders at same time recording country music. His producer was Mark Lindsay so reason song was so well produced.

"Games People Play" was a huge hit (#12 - pop chart) for singer-songwriter Joe South (Souter) back in 1969. Freddy's version was his debut single and went all the way to #1 on the country chart that same year. Interestingly enough, Weller and Souter were both from Atlanta and knew each other from playing in the same band. Weller also wrote big hits for another Atlanta artist Tommy Roe back in the late 1960s, notably "Dizzy." "Games People Play" has been covered by a LOT of artists, and a reggae version by Inner Circle in the mid-1980s brought the song renewed fame. It's a classic.

Freddy, like so many others, made the successful transition from rock to country during the 60's. He had a decent run of commercial success during the 70''s on the Columbia label. Joe, like Freddy, grew up in the south and therefore country music was always there in the background. His songs have been covered by many country artists e.g. "Rose Garden" #1 in 1970 for Lynn Anderson. Thus we have a formidable combination which helped to ensure that "Games People Play" would be a country chart-topper. Another impressive analysis and rating, Don. Keep rockin' dat country dude!

I think this was from the 1960s. It sure sounds like it. I am familiar with Joe South's version. Very deep lyrics. Thanks for sharing this reaction video. Cheers! ✌️

Yes, it's 9.3! Great song, hadn't heard it in a long long time. I remember Joe South's version, and this version is really good. I think I would prefer it, but the cobwebs are a little thick in my brain to be sure. Thanks Rick for a super request, and thanks Don for a great reaction!

You said , "I'm guilty of that sometime." Don, we're all guilty of that sometime. Dennis King gave you a lot of good information. Freddy Weller did a lot of covers of pop songs and with his twangy voice made them country. Good review. I love it when a song gets you tickled.

For me , I feel this cover of Joe South's song - Games People Play is OK. I like Joe's version better though. Consider doing a video for Joe's version.

Hey Don, I remember this when I was about 8or9 yrs old I always liked it glad to hear it again thanks for bringing back some old memories of those days, hey Don, I would like to request a song by Mel Street, called "THE TOWN WHERE YOU LIVE" MEL, was a great voice to listen to and I believe he would have been just as big as Jones, Twitty, Haggard, and the rest of the best of country music if he had lived!! Thanks for the request that's a good song by Freddy Weller.

I much prefer Weller's country version of this song to Joe South's pop/rock version; it flows better.

Hi Don! Your rating doesn't surprise me because it's your first listen to this song. I, like many have commented, remember the Joe South version from 1969. The lyrics back then didn't hit me as much (my age - teens) as it does now. I like this Country cover. It's very close to Joe's version, but with a Country feel. I try to say only what I mean (not what I think) and mean what I say. (That hold back gear you refer to) Now, if you come at me (or my son) in a negative way, my Mama bear comes out and I will verbally slice and dice - but only after I'm clear that it was intentional. Mama always said if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all. Reminds me of a line in "Steel Magnolias" from Olympia Dukakis! - “Well, you know what they say: if you don't have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!” HA! Good message for the day and awesome reaction! Thanks for the song and reaction!
