Ya know she is not talking about a cake, she is talking about losing "the one" and she will never have that "recipe" that they made together again, it's just not possible to recreate their chemistry. She's recalling, and lamenting, the place, the time, the feeling of the end.... . She will go on to rebuild her life and do her best to have a fulfilled life and forget him, but still, after all the loves she has had in her life, he will always be the one who remains in her heart. That's how I have understood it. I totally get it😌

I totally get it too. I also had the love of my life slip away and will always cherish the many Donna Summer songs we danced to. We would enter Dane competitions and win. We were well known in the clubs in Macon. Memorable time in my life.

Very well-written explanation of this lovely piece of music. I looked at it as a Metaphor, just like you did. Some people take everything in the Literal Context! Great job...and Greetings from N.Kentucky USA Y'All 🇺🇸 ❤

My late wife and I discoed to this song in 1978. After 20 minutes on the dance floor, I was soaked with perspiration. We had perfected our dance routine for several weeks before ever taking it to the club. I miss both my wife and Donna Summer; I'm sure they are singing and dancing in Heaven. There will never be another.

And maybe it won't be on the radio, but maybe you'll be dancing with your wife once again with Donna Summer herself singing live to both of you in Heaven. I'm pretty sure Donna is there. God, I love her so much.

Deanna, etc, you simply need to understand the history. Written by Jimmy Webb, it's a real place in Los Angeles .ca. It's where he spent a lot of time with a girlfriend, and eventual heartbreaking breakup. All the things in the song, men playing checkers, a cake that someone left out in the rain, were things that Webb observed and wrote about in this incredible age defying song.

MacArthur Park Suite Donna Summer Spring was never waiting for us, dear It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance Between the parted pages We were pressed In love’s hot, fevered iron Like a striped pair of pants MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no I recall the yellow cotton dress Foaming like a wave On the ground beneath your knees Birds, like tender babies in your hands And the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no There’ll be another song for me And I’ll sing it There’ll be another dream for me Someone will bring it I will drink the wine while it is warm And never let you catch me Looking at the sun oh yeah And after all the loves of my life After all loves in my life You’ll still be the one I’ll take my life into my hands And I’ll use it I’ll win the worship in their eyes And I’ll lose it I’ll have the things that I desire And my passion flow Like rivers through the sky Oh and after all the loves in my life, yeah After all the loves in my life You’ll still be the one And I’ll ask myself why, yeah MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left my cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no, oh MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left my cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no, oh

Donna Summer was big in the seventies and more than proms were bumping some memories up. I have to wonder how many babies were created with Ms Summer playing in the background.

This song was recorded back in 1967. Yet nobody could sing this song like Donna Summers.

Again, we must congratulate Jimmy Webb for writing yet another masterpiece. One of the best songwriters of the late 60s/early 70s.

I don’t know why someone left that cake in the rain, but I remember my mom playing this song when she was sad. I go back to it sometimes.

Essa música foi uma explosão tremenda no rio de janeiro dos anos 70's. Tocava em todas as discotecas da cidade maravilhosa.

This was massive n 1978 and I remember Paul Gambiccini, DJ, announced on UK Radio 1's US chart rundown that 'at number 1 on the US charts is Donna Summer with MacAthur Park'. This is truly magnificent (a's is the whole suite) and always sends shivers down my spine when I hear it. There is a small re-edit 3/4 through here but you'd never really know. Fantastic!
