MFAW's a masterpiece, absolutely LOVE it. Anise is the real star of the show to me. It & Monsieur are easily my favorite FM's. Musc Ravageur is close behind but those two are just incredible.

Agree with so many of your points here - the change of Aventus where it became less of a chypre is where it lost the love from me. I have a more recent bottle and it’s just meh. Also like what you said about changing tastes as you go through the journey - mine has really changed over the years and on top of that the different facets you catch from fragrances over multiple wears- it sort it reveals its own personality. Great video and explanations as always 🫡🐏

Back in my earliest frag days when I got into the whole niche market solely because of aventus and its supposed greatness, music for a while was what I thought I was going to be smelling when people said, "this smells like the pineapple top notes from aventus." There's a Floraiku called between two trees that has a pineapple note that's similar to my nose, but music for a while is still to this day one of my favorite fruity creations. I don't know if it's full bottle worthy because I've yet to finish my decant, but it's certainly the black sheep of the frederic malle lineup.

Ohhhh absolutely.... the hard core Malle fans hate this stuff and some of them hate the Desert Gems, I love them & can't wait to smell Hope 😊

Glad to see this review. I bought this blind buy about six months ago. (I tend to have good luck with blind buys). Love it. I live in Hawaii and don't find too many limitations on when I can wear it. I m a big fan of Frederic Malle.

I hated this fragrance the first few times I tried it. That was until I smelled it on someone else 2 years after its release, didn’t know what it was, asked the wearer, and was shocked to hear that it was this one. Let’s just say I fell in love with this one. To this day I absolutely adore it and have since even bought a backup. The patchouli dry down is to die for.

Well said Ramsey. I may not care for a fragrance now but it doesn’t mean I will sell it right away. I have over 200 fragrances and I keep every single one. Because there’s a good chance I’ll fall in love with it. Happens more times than I can count

Hey Ram if you have to choose between Music for While, the current version of Aventus or Creed Royal Oud. Which one would you pick? I am inclined towards Royal Oud (Julien Rasquinet is probably my favorite perfumer). But I am not 100% decided yet.

14:50 exactly my sentiment, first time I hear someone else verbalize it. I may ignore fragrances for weeks, months or even years (been collecting for two decades), to circle back to them again and view them in a whole different light, discover new facets and nuances, appreciate them more (sometimes less) or be charmed by a rarefied note all over again (tarragon in Sous le Vent, last week: hadn't worn this for many years). I also just love the singular character of a more or less intact collection, warts and all. (Another advantage: it forces me to be discernful; i don't want a freakishly large collection).
@RamseytheRam5 ай бұрын
Yes the knowledge of the experienced collector... although there is something to be said about the youthful running head first and buying everything early on when it's all new But you can't teach experience lol

'The Pefume Guy' told me he is sensitive to pineapple, and did not perceive any of that note in the perfume which blew my mind, because all i get, especially from the opening, is a sweet, juicy lavender and pineapple smoothie. Love this juice.

Too funny. I ordered a 2ml sample weeks ago, sprayed it once and thought, ick, don’t want to smell like pineapple lifesavers thank you very much. But I saw this and thought, ok let’s follow along with a spray. And sure enough, it’s exactly as you say. Much, much more going on. I get lavender and herbs very quickly and now it’s transitioning more. Still not feeling the vanilla or caramel but I’m still watching lol. Anyway, I’ll give it a full wear tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a weird yet sexy perfume. The performance is amazing, and the combination of lavender with that sweet pineapple is very original. I think that the name is a tribute to Purcell’s Music for a While composition.

Since you have many bottles of Frederic Malle, do you know if the newer boxes come without the barcode on the red box? I mention it because i own 3 and they all have a barcode and recently purchased a Rose & Cuir and that one didn't have Barcode on the red box. Just wondering.

Well, this is one where we are at odds. Our scent appreciation is a Venn diagram where some we agree on and some we disagree on. And I'm pretty much stuck at your initial impression of Music for a While. I've always been driven to try to understand what this fragrance is about. What Carlos Beniem, who created my favorite frag of all time - Polo Green, was trying to get at. I've been working from a decant and now will go back to see if I have any juice left. After four or so wearings, I haven't been motivated in continuing to try it for over a year. But, in a nutshell, Music for a While seems disjointed, without a coherent identity. It hits me as confused and unfocused As Fragrantica author Eddie Bulliqi said: "like a storyline that doesn’t lead anywhere". I agree with the often hilariously wordy Bulliqi on Music for a While. He wrote "It’s interesting, but strange, as if a great pause has taken place between each tone and something is missing or unsaid". Yep. "imbalanced"? Seemingly so. "a storyline that doesn’t lead anywhere, a pointless dead end that wasn’t thought through in relation to the overall map". Yep. "pulls in too many directions, lacks focus, and feels confused, with some beautiful materials but an ugly arrangement". Unfortunately, that's what I get too. But your journey over time with this monster has motivated me to go back and keep trying. I usually keep old review text in my Fragrantica reviews and just add updates to purposely show how my scent appreciation changes over time. I also would question the fougere characterization. I'll be looking for it next wearing, but usually the dominant fougere accord will immediately hit me in no uncertain terms. It's my favorite genre. I just don't get that in this sweet mess. Not everything with lavender is a fougere. And Fragrantica, not known for consistent accuracy, lists a Geranium note. It may have the thinnest of threads giving a curtsy to the fougere in that tangled mess of accords, but nothing to label it a fougere. All in my opinion.
@RamseytheRam5 ай бұрын
Very well said and thought out as usual JT... impressive commenting & I couldn't argue with a thing you said... other than you still using fragrantica of course 😆

@RamseytheRam I sprayed Music for a While on card tonight to reaquaint myself with it, and I do detect a fougere lurking in the background. I'll wear it again soon, but tonight my SOTN is Chanel Boy.
