Frederick II of Prussia (Friedrich der Große) was one of the most skilled military strategists of the Modern Era, seconded only by Napoleon Bonaparte, who lived a few decades later. Although he was an absolute monarch, this highly educated prince was, fundamentally, an "enlightened absolutist," given his tolerance (and encouragement) of "free speech" along with his forbearance on religious practices of non-protestant creeds. Indeed, Frederick was such an extraordinary historical persona, that he deserved his popularly acclaimed name "the Great."

This is a really interesting one to think about but I would say a few generals of the modern era (btw what dates does that include specifically ? ) can be called equals/arguably better than Frederick. Napoleon as you said. Other contenders are Suvorov of Russia. Eugene Savoy of Austria. Dukes of Marlborough and Wellington of Britain. Frederick the Greats victories at Leuethen and Rossbach are both stunning. But he did suffer more set backs than most of the other generals I’ve named. Charles XII Sweden was impressive too.

@@archivesoffantasy5560 I think you are quite right in many aspects, it's very interesting to think about and had he been only a Prussian general and not it's king I do believe I would agree, however what sets Frederick apart from other Generals is that he was also a quite apt Administrator, building on and improving the kingdom left to him by his father. It is also fair to mention I think that the level of adversity faced by him is quite easily what sets him apart. It is not that he faced setbacks but that despite those setbacks he scored victories on par with Napoleons greatest Masterpieces while also managing the rest of his kingdom without succumbing to adversity. It was indeed a stroke of luck that saved him though I do not think it invalidates his achievements. Napoleon lost too in the end, and he does absolutely deserve his title as one of the greatest generals in more recent history. Mind you Frederick had not nearly the resources a mighty nation like france had available to him. I do not think that if put in his shoes Napoleon could necessarily have done much better, if anything Napoleons hubris might have been his downfall where Fredericks personality might prevail.

@@verySharkey I agree with you. Frederick got a massive (2 actually) stroke of luck that most generals don’t when tsar Peter took over. It was a miracle. Nevertheless, he was a brilliant general and a great philosopher king. Definitely deserving of his epithet “the Great”. His upbringing even for a prince was tough. His father had one of his close mates executed when they both to ran away, and seeing his friend beheaded would haunt fredrick the rest of his life. Frederick the Great was almost certainly a homosexual.

In my opinion he is Europe’s greatest monarch alongside Peter the Great, he took Prussia from just another German state to a European power in his lifetime, not just military but culturally and economically he transformed his country into what would become the power that unified Germany under one hundred years later.

Till 1807 he showed magnificent battlefield intellect only later did he count more and more on numbers and less prowess but he had so many fruictious campaign and revolutionized the army into the corps system which the Asutrians, prussians and Russians copied. Truly a towering figure in history, both literally and figuratively. The only criticism of him with which I hold any sympathy is the hypocrisy of his only serious splash into the literary world. He castigated with powerful and convincing rhetoric the brilliant mind who refined the very arts of statesmanship of which he was a master. His continual reinforcement of this line throughout his life helped to forge a strong cultural tradition in the west of duplicitous political leaders who espouse certain values in public rhetoric while implementing diametrically opposite policies. I live near King of Prussia, PA, USA Nobody around seems to care about the real person. They shop there at one of the largest malls in the country... (They call the town KOP, so they don't have to say the long name.) PA was settled by a huge number of Germans over the centuries, especially early on in the state's history, hence the town's name. Not far from where I live, is Valley Forge, where Washington wintered his troops before crossing the Delaware River. When he fought the British at Trenton, and won the battle, he had to not only engage the professional army of England, but had to battle Hessian mercenaries who fought bravely. Some of the captured Hessians were put to work on farms (Many in Berks County), where they were absorbed into the local German speaking population. I first discovered Frederick's musical genius when I studied J.S. and K.P.E Bach's harpsichord music. His court music director and resident composer, at Potsdam, was Bach's second oldest son (Karl Phillip Emanuel). He often directed the symphonies of the King (and those of his own). His other duties included accompanying Frederick's flute playing. When "Old Bach" came to visit the court, Frederick immediately had J.S improvise a fugue on the King's theme (a very hard thing to do, especially given the bizarre fugue subject.)

But, although you mention Voltaire as a famous contemporary, you omit Bach, who was invited to Sans Souci in 1747 and wrote “The Musical Offering” based on a theme by Frederick. Fewer battle scenes and greater emphasis on Frederick’s cultural connections would be preferable.

Johannes Runquist There is some evidence of it yes. Letters written to his sister have many gay undertones or outright sayings that prove his sexuality. I remember reading some evidence that had to do with him falling in love and pursuing a relationship with a boy his age when he was younger which upon the discovery by his father the boy was sent away and court culture changed practically overnight. I know Voltaire at one point after a falling out between the two stated that Fredrick was gay. Let me find some links.

I think he deserves a positive place in European history. He gave Prussia a proper legal system in which all his subjects enjoyed certain rights, religious tolerance at a time in which the rest of Europe did not. He was an Enlighted despot for sure. Also Prussia was not a war mongering state, it spent way more time at peace than at war in his reign. If you look Britain and France they were always involved in some war with each other or someone else for most of the 18th century.

His religious tolerance only went as far as it suited him. Britain, the Dutch Republic, Switzerland and Scandinavia and some other German states were more tolerant. A high degree of religious tolerance was guaranteed in the huge Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth as part of the the Warsaw Confederation Act 1573 however, the degree of religious freedom varied over time. The Constitution of 1791 acknowledged Catholicism as the "dominant religion", but this was more a reaction to Orthodoxy, the state religion of the increasingly threatening Russia. Freedom of religion for other Christian churches and Judaism was still guarenteed after 1791. The period of total religious freedom within the Commonwealth 1573 - 1791 encompassed ALL of the life of Frederick the Megalomaniac As a matter of personal ambition, Frederick the Megalomaniac started by forcing huge numbers of reluctant young men into his fascist army and then instigated wars with his German neighbours which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and vast numbers of Slavs in Silesia and Čechy. This is in addition to the untold misery of millions of civilians who died of famine and as a result of pillage, those who were murdered, and vast numbers of women who were raped by marauding soldiers. He also put the German oppression of Slavs into a higher gear, which, over the course of the next 170 years, resulted in the deaths of over 100 million Slavs .... at least 30 million in the final German belch 1938-1945 (Yes ! Of course, Hitler admired him). We hear still today, the grizzlings of a Satanic Cult of which the Nazis murdered about 5,700,000. This pales into insignificance when compared to the deaths of over 30 million Slavs.The German view of Slavs is perhaps well represented by the words of Reinhard Heydrich which translate into English thus, "A third of all Czechs will be exterminated, the other two thirds will be worked and starved to death in the regions of Russia". It should be remembered that Catherine the so-called Great was a German as were the Russian Tsars thereafter and many of the aristocracy in Russia through to 1917. Poland was progressively chopped to pieces by the German Berlin Regime, the German Vienna Regime, and the German Tsarist Regime.

Caesar 10/10 military leadership, 10/10 Statesmanship.. Fredrick was more of an 8/10 as a military leader.. He consistently underestimated enemies and made mistakes that Caesar and Napoleon did not.. Sometimes he didn''t even know where his enemies were on the map.. Let's not forget his humiliation early in his military career.. 9/10 Statesmanship, his betrayal of France is 1 reason why he was constantly fighting outnumbered (A Caesar would have handled the situation much better).. He was great but does not deserve a 10/10 in either metric.

Even though he displayed bravery in personally leading the battles, Frederick was very willing to spill the blood of his people on endless warfare to make Prussia one of Europe's great powers. That alone makes it difficult for me to consider him a benevolent despot. Prussian militarism was one of the great curses in 20th century history, with the outcome for Germany being the loss of much of the territory of historic Prussia to Poland and Russia.

Here we go! Though I still don’t understand the difference between “King in Prussia” vs “King of Prussia” Every kingdom has one king and he is the king IN the kingdom. In my mind, King *in* is the same as King *of* 😅

It’s king in Prussia because they still wanted to recognize the polish king as Prussian king so they wouldn’t go to war but king in Prussia still held the power...I think

He was only king in Prussia, because the Austrian Kaiser didn't like the thought, that another king besides him rules in the empire. But "region" Prussia wasn't in the Holly Roman empire. So he couldn't king of the land Prussia, but he could king in the region of Prussia. This is the story.

There's a statue of his father near where I live. Taking a walk, I sometimes salute him, for the awesome son he had...and maybe never deserved. Won't judge, though. I probably wouldn't be here, if things had turned out differently.

Excellent presentation. Frederick King of Prussia was truly an outstanding and inspiring man even though through sheer hubris, he threw away an army at Kunersdorf (similar to Lee at Gettysburg. come to think of it). My vote for the greatest Frederick of all time is Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250)--Stupor Mundi, the Wonder of the World. In my opinion, Frederick II Hohenstaufen is the one Frederick deserving to be called "the Great."

Here's my question to you. When lauded about his generalship, Frederick said: I never did conduct a retreat. Was he being humble, for once, that he'd never conducted the difficult fighting retreat or sortie-to-relieve...or was he simply boasting that indeed, he was 'great' and never had to conduct a retreat?

The potato was regarded with suspicion in Europe during is introduction into Prussia and people were hesitant to eat it, so Frederich had a policy with the courts where they wouldn't prosecute potato thieves and the state would reimburse the farmers. This would lead to the potato becoming a staple in not only the German diet but the European diet, hence why his grave is covered with potatoes. Also Frederich never allowed anyone to criticize him while on campaign save for one person, his flute instructor who he never failed to bring with him. Also, in a streak of cruelty, the bottom shelf for the bookshelves in Frederichs study at Sansoucci are unusually high off the ground. This is because Frederich is on the shorter side and his father had them custom made so Frederich couldnt grab a book off of the shelf without help. Whether out of spite or endearment Frederich had these shelves brought to Sansoucci where they are still in his study
