@@RenaissanceMan29 The middle east was more of a big league then England was tbh, but of course in war good tactics and luck can overcome an experianced and battle hardened army, even much larger ones. Look at Skanderbeg vs the Ottomans.

@@RenaissanceMan29 Vikings in general are pretty overrated, their not really all that different from other warlord pagans. What they had going for them, was that their shipping technology was quite advanced for the time and they were very good at navigating river systems, quickly raiding and disappearing before a serious force could stop them. The other benefit they had was Scandinavia, it was a tough land that made tough people who wished to travel and plunder elsewhere, and not many people wanted to invade the bitterly cold and mountanous Scandinavia. Of course if they put together a large army like Hardradas or the Great Heathen army, then it was a different story and they could topple kingdoms. The Normans and Varangians were also impressive forces, but generally most Vikings were just small scale raiding parties and not conquerors.

@@RenaissanceMan29 His great grandson, Sigurd the Crusader, was actually the first king to go on a crusade just after Jerusalem was captured. As a thank you present he was given a fragment of the cross. Since then, «everybody» went there and got their t-shirt or their splint. Unlike his predecessor, Sigurd returned home with only one (borrowed) ship, few men, and little else but the wooden splint and international reputation gained.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge was amazing. One lone axeman held off hundreds for hours and killed forty men single handedly until a soldier went under the bridge and stabbed him through the groin. Another awesome video mates. You should think about putting these on disk and selling them to the public (schools) 😁

I have always been skeptical of that one... it's in the texts, yes, but it doesn't make a bit of sense... We know for sure that the English army had archers, because Harald Hardrada was killed by an arrow to the throat; so why wouldn't they just have feathered the famous Axeman with arrows the moment he stepped onto the bridge? Seems likely that the English sources thought it sounded better than "The viking army felt safe and was totally unprepared for a fight, so they couldn't put up effective resistance. It was more a massacre than a proper battle." The viking casualties were insanely high. Unprecedentedly high. The end of the viking age high. And I think it's because they probably just got annihilated before they really knew what was happening. I think the badass on the bridge is a bit of window dressing to make a slaughter look like a battle. It's more heroic that way.

Excellent video! The most complete and detailed account of Harold Hardrada wrapped up in a superbly written and narrated manner, the equal of any acclaimed ancient saga. On the question of "great", well that's very subjective depending on the point of view. In a nutshell I'd say he deserves "great" attached to his name. His drive to excel and willingness take on any challenge regardless of the odds sets him up to be a leader of men. He obviously had charisma to attract large numbers of followers and gain the confidence of foreign royalty to be trusted in their service. Its really amazing how much activity and accomplishments he packed into such a short time. Just traveling the vast distances alone is quite an accomplishment in itself.

Thank you for this excellent biography on the man and the warrior. I would love to see a movie about his life, because I feel his years were full of triumph and tragedy. His invasion into England definitely caused the Anglo-Saxons to split their defense. And his last battle must have been so frustrating, as he ended up on the downside of history. But still a great man and leader.

Battle of Stiklestad is right in my neighbourhood ;) Its true that there isnt any proof of any battlefield here,just the written sources of heimskringla by Snorri Sturluson written some 200 years after the battle. Although until proven otherwise,Stiklestad remains as the primary site of the battle.And every year since 1954 (except this year for obvious reasons.) There is a outdoor arena theatre which is named the Saint Olav drama,which is about Olav and his army resting on a fictional farm in a place not far from the swedish border called Sul(roughly 30 km from Stiklestad) before the last march to battle,where he is defeated and killed.

There is something that sounds to me dreadfully wrong with the "account" of the battle of Stamford bridge. Hardråde an experienced warrior, takes York then leaves the safety of the walls to go and relax on a river bank and sends his armour and some of his force off without putting out scouts to warn of eventual reprisals from an English force, which he must have expected would come? And then one man standing on a bridge and the English force letting him without shooting him with arrows? I think we have to remember, the account was written down long after the battle by someone not there and was possibly influenced by the songs and poems of Norse "skalds" of the era who would embellish and immortalise norse warriors.
@prinz5816
@prinz5816 Жыл бұрын
He didnt really tell the story correctly, ill try to explain it quite shortly. 1. Tostigs old capital was York, he didnt want it looted, hence why Harald secured it then encamped at Stamford bridge with around 2/3 of his men. 2. The Norwegian army was awaiting a prisoner exchange. Hardrada did have scouts on the other side of the river however the realization of it being an army came too late. 3. This day is described as particularly hot and sunny, hence why the Northmen left their armoured and heavy equipment at their naval base at Riccal where Prince Olav & 3000 soldiers of his army were guarding the ships. 4. Harald had the chance to pull away down to his ships to attempt to regain more numbers and equipment, it is not directly known why he chose to stay and fight 5. The battle map didnt show the reality of the battle. Harald formed his men into a circular formation, with interlocking shields with spears poking out to hold off cavalry. A sort of square like in the napoleonic wars. You could assume his plan was to hold off the anglo saxons for long enough so that the reinforcements at Riccal could arrive and smash the saxon flank. 6. While the story of the viking on the bridge is sceptic, its fair to note it was the Anglo saxons who first wrote of this occurance. it would be hard, and wasteful, to have archers aiming at a singular viking on a bridge during the heat and struggle of the early phase of battle, resulting in friendly fire etc. 7. Harald ordered his 3 fastest riders to get the reinforcements at Riccal, and upon their arrival they were so exhausted we are told many collapsed and died of exhaustion. 8. The reinforcements did intially check the anglo saxon attack, but at this point Harald had already died. After the Saxons charged the shieldwall with their cavalry, they were repelled and massacred by Haralds spears & archers. At this point, some of the northmen in the front rank broke formation to chase the cavalry, to which the anglo saxons ordered a general attack to take advantage of this. Harald had anticipated this move however, and moved his elite reserves into the breach. It can be fairly judged that had this not happened, the reinforcements wouldve routed the saxons. Hope this helped

If he was so great, how did he let William the Bastard sucker him into fighting King Harold alone? And why did he lose? Willie's intent was to fight the survivor all along, weakened and battle-weary. Perhaps Hardrata thought the same, he would dispose of the Saxon and then deal with his bastard cousins afterwards.

Dude he plundered both sides of the Mediterranean and parts of the middle East with a personal army. His achievements were quite significant. Williams voyage to England was delayed because of unfavourable winds. They waited on William but he never arrived until Godwinson had already left to see off Harald. And I'd also say perhaps that Machiavelli has something to say on this. Western principalities we're much easier to enter with the invitations of random barons etc but it was hard to keep under control because other barons can do the same thing and invite other armies in to take someones place, or others like William allegedly being promised the throne as Godwinsons cousin. Of the three legitimate (debatable) claimants William won. Harald just couldn't defeat the Anglo-Saxons without his full army but I doubt he'd had defeated William considering the Normans were possibly the greatest strategic fighters of the time. But Harald did so well in the East and North Africa where it was notoriously difficult to break down forces because of their social structure was much like a dictatorship and no-one invites you in to take over you have to fight your way through. And the Islamic caliphs back then dominated much of the East and still own much of the land that the Romans used occupy. Harald was a legend with his smash and grab techniques. Plundering palaces etc. I don't know of any other Western European Kings doing something of this magnitude. And especially from an exiled boy born into a small monarchy in the north of Europe.

@XcXcz mixing Germanics=Norse with Celtics makes the most ferocious fighters, even the Franks were mixed with Gallo Romans as were the Burgundians, also the Vikings in open battle got beaten mostly by the Franks which were the top dogs of all Germanic tribes after being in Normandy for 2 generation Frankish Normans conquered England and later Southern Italy and Sicily..even German writer and thinker Goethe said so..and nobody could withstand the Allemanic-Helvetic top warriors of the Middle ages even German knight armies fled when they approached and kings made them to their body guars for centuries.

Although initially successful, Harald was totally owned by the Christian Saxons, defeated and killed in a surprise attack by Harold Godwinson's forces in the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September, which wiped out almost his entire army. Harold was killed by an arrow in the throat.

King Harald (Hardrada) Sigurdsson is in my family tree about 35 generations back. His "nic name" is spelled Hardrata in our documents. I always thought I would like to ask him what he was thinking when they left their armor and shields in York. He'd probably make a scowl with clenched teeth and "put" his sword through my chest. LOL

Andy McSherry, MSc Maybe Andy and I agree to die in battle and enter Valhalla was every Vikings dream , but the use of a bow in battle ,in one form or another goes back into pre history, and even the so called Ice man discovered in the Alps was killed by an arrow , I know that it’s not strictly a long bow , but some were found in peat In Somerset that dated to over 2000 years ago, and I can’t honestly think why they were never used in battle . Also the long Bow was a long range weapon, while the welsh bow ( or the like) being smaller and more manoeuvrable was used more as a close combat weapon. I’m not trying to be cleaver ,or a know all ,just a different perspective.
@alanwareham7391
@alanwareham7391 4 жыл бұрын
Andy McSherry, MSc Andy this was a story that was not written down at the time ,and passed down orally for lord knows how many years ,before it was, and as we all know, as a story is handed down and retold, it gets slightly altered as each person tells his version of the story. The only reason I included the iceman was just to prove how long the bow in one form or another has been used as a weapon. Of course they wore armour, as did the Saxons ,but as you know it was not what people think it was as these were not the heavily armoured knights of 500 years later .But at close range this man would have taken on men armed with bows and spears that used at close range as a stabbing weapon are devistating ,after all the Neanderthals hunted Mammoths with them. I’m not knocking anyone’s history or hero as I agree such a man may have existed and even fought in battle , but it surprises me that people actually take it as 100 % true from start to finish .As I said Andy I’m not trying to be clever or prove that I’m smarter than anyone.

And he was likely adherent to the eastern orthodox christanity too, from living in the east for decades. Which probably explains a large part of his troubles with the church and how they named him Hardruler. He must have been a formidable politician on level with his fighter skills, having survived in such a high position in Konstantinopel for so long.
