Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I am old enough to have the original.

Fantastic! This has to be one of only about a half dozen Avalon Hill games I do not own and have never played. Nice to see what it is all about. Thanks!

Another game from AH I have but have not played. Got to get it on the table. Great review as usual

I own the original game. Also have the expansion that came with the General magazine. FTG would be a great candidate for a reprint with modern graphics.

Map looks beautiful. Minimalistic but very pleasing to the eye.

Great review, thanks a lot. I think I would mention that the loss of a leader, like Daun in your example, is pretty catastrophic to either side. Depots and fortresses are very important in this game, but leaders are how you do everything.

An article in the General magazine included a variant which covered the Silesian war.

Yes, I have that but didn't know that it was NOT included in the republished version by Avalon Hill. I will have to mount up the counters sometime and give it a try. I'm struck by how different the scenarios play out. 1756 for example as opposed to 1760. Totally different games.

When you throw the die for the combat result, don't you have to add/deduct the respective leaders' attack and defence bonuses too?

Thanks for the review. I 'll put this title in my radar (2nd hand). I have enjoyed very much strategic games of the 7YW in Europe : "Friedrich" (3-4 players) and "Prussia Defiant Stand" a CDG from Worthigton Games.

This is only a 'guesstimate' as it depends on the scenarios. The short ones, I would say less than two hours. The campaign game, I think would take awhile to complete.

Yes, you do. I did so but failed to mention it in the commentary.

Hi. You might be interested in a new game called the great crisis of Frederick the great by VUCA games. It is one of the best games that I have played in years. Great components and map. An easy to learn but challenging /fun game as well.

@Molly - Thanks for the tip Molly, I just checked it out on Board Game Geek. Looks pretty darn good.

Helpful video. Where do you get the sheets of plastic you use to cover the board?

Given the age of this game it is easy to dismiss it as something the Flintstones use to play. However a lot of these older games are very interesting to play. From the video it seems apparent that the fortresses are key to winning the game. But supply and the vagaries of the "fog of war" doesn't make this as straightforward as it might first appear. I often find the more one delves into the intricacies of the game, or a game, the more treasures there are to unearth. I suspect FtG is no exception.

How long do you estimate an average game will last?

Your combat example completely left out the leader die mods, and prisoners. And you round down, BTW

Interesting though the problem with these games is the esthetics. They simply do not motivate me to try them. They look horrible. But then given my age i'm spoiled rotten visually.

I never played this game, but me and my friends/older brother played many an Avalon Hill wargame. There are some truly great games they did, like Stalingrad, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Squad Leader/Advanced Squad Leader, Third Reich, Diplomacy, etc. I would love to have somebody re-publish at the very least Squad Leader or Advanced Squad Leader. Last I knew, Curt Schilling (the baseball pitcher) had the rights to that game. Never got re-published that I know of :(
