I remember! Back then,Lots of people criticized Lyoto Machida for this fight. They say that it was a rubbery and Rua should win this fight. I completely disagree with that! Yes! It was a close fight but! I think Lyoto did enough to win this fight. If you guys noticed anytime when Rua was attacking , Lyoto was executing perfectly counter punch in head. Beside that it was obvious that commentator Joe Rogan was on Rua s side and he was praising Rua s name often even when Machida was scoring and he was creating image that Rua was wining the fight.I rewatched the fight with volume down and you can see clearly how Lyoto Machida was scoring perfectly.

@michaelray50237 ай бұрын
Lyoto was landing a lot of straight punches and knees to the gut. Stuffed them takedowns too. Jon Jones watched this fight very closely, he opened the title fight with a knee that Shogun never recovered from. Jones watched all the LHW fights that Machida fought, Machida exposed a lot of holes in their game that Greg Jackson took advantage of.
@biscobisco18823 ай бұрын
Machida landing knees to the body while Shogun is throwing a punch has nothing to do with 6'4" Jones landing a jumping knee to the head on the lead 18 months later and one knee injury later. Machida himself didn't even capitalise on it in their rematch.
@jonathanbradley48962 ай бұрын
The Shogun that faced Jones wasn't even 30% of the one you saw in this video. His knees held out just long enough to take the title from Machida then he was cooked, and the damage he took from Dan Henderson basically ended his career. If this Shogun faced Jones in 2011 it would have been a much more competitive fight. Not saying Shogun would have won because Jones is obviously the 205 GOAT, but he wouldn't have completely been destroyed like we saw.

This was one of those things were people didn't always know what they were looking at, including Rogan. Case in point, Shoguns low kicks. Rogan thinks he sees the low kick landing constantly, but what Machida was doing is stepping through the kick and using that to counter with his cross. It takes a lot of steam out of the kick but gives him the opportunity to land a shot. It's a thing he's brought over from his karate training and which he consistently kept in his toolbox and it was working for him here.

As there is with almost any controversial decision. If it wasnt a controversial decision, thered be no controversy, now would there. Add in that Shogun was the aggressor for 95% of the fight and held the center of the cage (yes I know this is Lyotos style to circle and counter but part of the judging criteria is meant to be "aggression and octagon control") This was a pretty clear win for Rua I'd give it to Shogun 49-46 but if you give round 1 to Lyoto then it's still 48-47 Rua.
