Walking is the most important movement you could ever do. Do you limp or feel out of balance when you walk? Do you get tired walking long distances? Martha Peterson shares a few tips about how sensory motor amnesia changes the way we walk and what you can do about it.
If you enjoy our KZbin content and would like to learn more about how you can treat chronic muscle pain from the comfort of your own home, check out our video lessons, attend an in-person Fundamentals Course weekend (offered worldwide), come to one of our many retreats, or sign up for our online classes. Thanks this should be taught in schools! Our bodies need an owners manual.

I wholeheartedly agree that this work should be taught in schools! Imagine a world in which children are taught to pay attention to their somatic experience and allow that to be a foundation for all movement, not to mention decisions, mindset, and outlook on life. Thanks for your comment! Share your experience with your friends and by all means, consider attending one of our 2-day Fundamentals Immersion courses. It's a deep dive into Essential Somatics and all it has to offer you in terms of life skills.

Thank you. There is no end to growth and learning. This is what this work offers: a way to live and move and de-habituate from the habits and stresses that contribute to restricted movement, pain, and a physical sense of disconnection.

You're very welcome. Being aware of how you walk is a huge step (no pun intended) in your learning. Keep practicing (and consider coming to some of our online movement classes) and notice how your walk changes and becomes more smooth and efficient.

You're very welcome! Don't we all wish we'd known this work back when we were young parents. It's never too late to release those habituated tight muscles, however. All the Somatic Movements move you towards the ability to walk freely, so enjoy your practice and keep moving!

Thaaaank you once again, Martha! Always great information for those of who are suffering. I've gotten temporary relief from many of your tips. Retraining my body is going to take some time (it took a while to get dysfunctional). I'm so grateful!

You're so welcome. Yes, restoring freedom of movement is a process (as is life). I would highly recommend that you consider attending one of our Fundamentals Immersion courses (we teach them worldwide). They're a 2-day deep dive into the movements, concepts, theory - with a skilled teacher guiding you. You may just find that you jump-start your progress. Additionally, working one on one with a skilled practitioner helps you move forward quickly as well. You can get all that information on the Essential Somatics website. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm!

If your TFL is tight and your glut medius is bothering you you probably haven an habituated Trauma Reflex. One movement alone (the TFL movement) won't necessarily "fix" your problem. It's critically important to address the full pattern of unconscious holding (sensory motor amnesia) that you have in the center of your body. Consider what you're doing all day that may be contributing to your habituated tension or what you might have done in the past. The brain is simply in a habit of contracting. Your brain needs more information. Don't just address the side with the pain; address the other side as well! Learn to release the front and back of your body, too. I also highly recommend working one on one with a skilled Clinical Somatic Educator (nothing takes the place of a skilled teacher) and attending one of our Fundamentals Immersion weekends (taught world-wide). The very nature of Sensory Motor Amnesia is "amnesia:" you can't sense nor move what it is that's bothering you. Release the front, back, and sides of your body, restore neutral and balance (with the help of a teacher), and you're on your way to getting rid of your TFL pain forever! I hope this helps!
