I love how a young person is directing his knowledge and care to an older population. So much is directed at young people staying fit and healthy. I love his clear calm down to earth informative style. Nice hype, just solid teaching and explanation from a truly kind heart. Since I’m a dancer staying fit and healthy is vital to my well-being.

Will - I can’t thank you enough for this. I’ve always walked rather than using the car so am fairly fit, but my walking has dropped off since I retired, and I’ve noticed how tired my body is - when it’s not even a strenuous walk. As I watched this video, my mouth actually hung open in shock at the realisation that my lack of muscle is causing this exhaustion! Thank you SO much! I’m off to find a step!!!

This video reminds me of the research published in 2022 by Marc Hamilton at the University of Houston. It was a study involving people performing "soleus pushups". It produced some very interesting results involving glucose and lipid regulation. They basically found that the soleus muscle could be worked for hours without developing any fatigue. It re-enforces my belief that humans were meant to walk every day, and that people are more susceptible to health issues if they don't walk regularly.

Thank you Will. I am in my mid eighties, and have been a walker most of my life. About a yer ago I suffered a Heart attack, and was hospitalized for 7 weeks, during when the mucles in my legs, particularly my calfs seriously attrophied. I have walking, with the aid of a rolling walker, in an effort to force my legs to regain strength and mobility. My efforts have not produced the results that I had hoped for. Hopefully doing these exercises will provide the results I hav originally hoped for. Cheers.

Recently I had on several occasions told my husband I did not understand why my calves felt excessively sore in spite of not walking that very much. Now I understand. I've been losing muscle. Will, this is exactly what I needed! My surgeon wants me to walk up x amount of flights of stairs without 'huffing'. I find that while I can get up the flights without huffing (much), my calves were rebelling so I'd need to halt walking and take a day of rest between the stair ascending. I now can 'fix things'. This is something I’ve not heard before. I had a traumatic injury to my left leg/ankle at age 19 which resulted in a 2” loss of my leg. I have a very difficult time coming up in my left toes. I do calf raises every other night. 3-4 sets of 15 each foot. I’m also using a walking pad. I can only tolerate 1 1/4” lift which I realize has compromised my spine, hips and knees. I’m hoping doing these exercises will overcome some of the damage I’ve done over 50 years. Thank you!🙏🏻

I have si joint dysfunction with left side weakness and chronic sciatica pain with nerve compression, i would not feel safe on a step because i am prone to injury, so i want to do Wills advice on this video but rather than using a step i will do the same exercise with a theraband. Thankyou i highly recommend his channel and watch periodically as you will feel better and stronger for it,so subscribe to his channel. Its interesting that he mentions distance when walking and how if can affect us in different ways. I can only pace myself slowly but even a short hill can feel like my Everest. I get phlebitis often after walking, but you know the old story you have to keep moving, and its especially important if you want a better quality of life as we age. So thankful to Wills channel and so kind to share his professional advice to follow and implement in our daily lives.

Good advice. I've always believed in walking almost everywhere. Get and keep active before you hit 50. It's muscle loss so don't let it happen. I'm 69 and walk at least twice a week with my rucksack just over one mile each way to go shopping. Too easy to get in a car but don't do it. I have a motorcycle but choose to walk. Keep the blood squirting round.

I’m up and down the stairs all day in this Victorian terrace house where the stairs are quite shallow. To work my calves I climb them by doing what you show in the second exercise- I drop the heel below the stair and raise up on one leg to take the next stair. I find this far less tiring than using my thighs. I do the same calf raises on a step every morning. It strengthens my feet as well. It really does put a spring in your step for regular walking outside.

My PT told me to at age 50 to make sure to retain my strength, muscle tone and flexibility. I stopped concentrating on cardio exercises. As a female, my desk job was causing havoc on my body due stress, loss of muscle and improper posture. I still enjoy walking and biking but now I work in more stretching and strength training. At age 56 I just wish I had more energy. I get tired, but have trouble sleeping.

Thanks Will. I always seem to ignore my calves by favouring my quads. I was under the mistaken belief that the reason why I got tired was because I needed to eat. I now realise I was wrong and will begin to target my calves.

Great info! Although I use the ChiWalking method and we use our legs for stability not for propulsion. I actually just did 12K feet in elevation gain last week at the TransRockies race and barely felt my calves because I don't use them to push off. To each his own of course and I love that you are catering to this population of people as well!

All your videos are so full of useful information for seniors. I too have a great deal of respect and admiration for you. You are so devoted to helping seniors age more gracefully. I do have one question, for those seniors who still exercise, what are your recommendations regarding the use of mini-trampolines - trampoline exercises and what characteristics or features should we be aware of when purchasing? Thanks for all your extremely helpful informative videos.

I guess that Im the exception to the rule here as a mountain hiker. Its actually counterproductive to walk w extra stress on the calves in this context . walking a 10- ish mile hike w 3 to 4k elevation gain like this> high risk of extreme soreness or injury . Granted, I'm sure that in all other forms of conventional walking, these methods come in handy.

I'm 55 years old and found out that biking at least 30 minutes per session helps out with the calf muscles. At work, I usually get 10 - 21 k of walking. I also get plenty of lifting that adds workout to the calf muscles.

Wil - could you comment on this perhaps for me? ... I know that contraction of the calf muscles causes a pump-action on the circulation of the blood in an upwards direction to the heart, i.e. to aid circulation against gravity. I have been told that calf muscles perform this function.... if so, your recommendation to strengthen these would have great additional significance. Am I right to think this... Many thanks for your videos..... you are a born teacher, with a great skill.

I tune in to your channel looking for help as I recover from knee surgery, followed by ankle surgery on the same leg 3 months later. So I browse your videos searching for something specific I need extra help with. I am always amazed that the first thing I see is exactly what I need. Tonight was no different, I have an appointment tomorrow with my doctor to find out why my legs are so week and tired. Well now I know why, and I can do something about it. That is quite a coincidence. The next thing I want to find out is why my back is popping so much when I move. It doesn't hurt but it scares me. I assume it's because I have a weak core. I will keep tuning in, I may find my fix here. Thank you Will, you do an awesome job explaining how to do these exercises properly. I really appreciate that your helping me to understand what's been happening to my aging body. Thanks again

Thank you for the advice. However, the step stool you used is dangerous as it can flip and get someone hurt. I use the first step of the bottom of the stairs or the side of the treadmill to do the exercise. Much safer

I’m 67, in the last 4 days I’ve averaged 103 minutes of brisk walking ( as measured by the NHS Active 10 app) per day, out of an avge of 138 total minutes total walking per day, at over 15000 steps per day. One walk was 6 miles with no stops in warm weather (28 degrees). This is admittedly a bit more activity than usual but it doesn’t feel a stretch physically - and I’m not particularly fit and am a bit overweight with high blood pressure - the recommended 150 minutes a week of brisk walking is easier than most people think.
