Simple room acoustics problems, like room modes, might be solved without shifting the problems to monetary conflicts if you play music from audiophile player software in your computer. Let’s see how that works.

As a user of the Roon software, I am using here the convolution option in the DSP engine for room correction. I was surprised by the result since my older Linn stereo set was sounding rather dull compared to my headphone set. I know this is not for everyone but the result is what counts. Thanks to a guide on the Roon forum is was really easy to use a miniDSP UMIK-1 microphone and the Room EQ Wizard software for creating a filter set. A great Linn demo with Space Optimisation on the XFI PREMIUM audio show inspired me to try this out at home and with great results.

I am about to delve into this with Roon. Did you manage to correct time domain correction as well as I am reading that only DIRAC does that and nothing else in the market. Thanks

Thanks for the video, for basic purposes downloading a spectrum analyzer app on my phone and using APO Equalizer for Windows 10 I was able to detect the bass bloat at 160 khz and remove it. I"m not after any serious corrections but it helped straight away!

Hello Hans, you accidentally mention a wrong value for the speed of sound.. it’s not 334, but 343 m/s at 20 degree C and 1 bar. It’s only a few percent wrong, but still…

Depends on the temperature and air pressure😄 We are taught to judge the distance of thunder by counting the time between the lightning and the thunder and divide it by three to get the distance in km. So that is 333,333 m/s. That must have still be in my head somehow. But you are right, of course, 343 m/s is the official figure.

Hans should the squareroot sum of squares for the longest length and room height also be considered?
@Rene_Christensen
@Rene_Christensen 4 жыл бұрын
MrSullygr Yes, you should consider all modes, and also the fact that not all of them are excited depending on your loudspeaker placement, and also if your listening placement is so that you cannot hear one or more of the excited mode.

In the current version on a Mac choose Audio Settings form the Audirvana menu (top left in the menu bar), scroll down to Audio Units and switch Audio Units on. Now you can select any AU filter you want.

Sound speed is around 344 m/s at room temperature. Modes are calculated not only by the individual lengths of the room, so your calculations here are not comprehensive. But you probably know this. Good videos overall.

Indeed, the idea is to give the general public with interest in stereo reproduction some idea on how this works. Not to do a course in acoustics.

This is a great video for areas that most audiophiles tend to ignore. Thanks for it. Do you have an approach that might work for reflective higher frequencies, which might be caused by glass window reflections, where treatments are difficult? Thanks for any thoughts...

@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 6 жыл бұрын
As I describe in kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYnSma2hocuqhtU a sleeping bag or blanked can be used to test the effect of damping. It will probably be too much, a mix of damping and scattering might be better. Again watch the aforementioned video. When you understand these mechanisms it's up to you to find an aesthetically pleasing solution that it acceptable for your significant other.

Do you plan to do any reviews of mac based frequency analyzers? I am guessing a measurement mic might be a good investment in any case. I have the ones that come with surround receivers, but I am guessing these aren't that good. Like you, I have previously not been impressed with most receiver based room correction solutions. Nice to know there are other ways to address these problems.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 6 жыл бұрын
I will focus on room correction software. Frequency analysers as such do not have my attention. Measurement mikes for room correction don't need to be too sophisticated since deviations for the ideal response can be corrected using a calibration file.
@TheVictoire22
@TheVictoire22 3 жыл бұрын
Hans. Your depth and wide measurement are luckily resulting almost the same frequency harmonics. In my situation they differ. Which are more important? I would say the smallest distance causing sooner an issue at low frequencies... also there are a lot of great vst / equalizers / dsp plugins available (commercial) enabling even left and right other settings ...
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you mean. 5.4, 10 and 2.8 meters give different wave lengths and the Q of room modes is rather high. Dirac differs from other payed and free room correction systems in that they use an unique mix of FIR and IIR filtering that - for me - makes the artefacts of the processing I normally hear, are inaudible with this system.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel @ 6:01 you have 31/32 | 62/64| 93 / 96 | 124 / 128 I have 37 / 50 | 74 /100 | 111 / 150 | 200 and you can only 4 audio plugins means 4 frequencies. My question is which of the 4 are most important? 37 / 50 and 100 / 111 or 37 / 74 / 111 / 150?

Please first apply my two step approach to loudspeaker placement (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYnSma2hocuqhtU). And don't try to equalise for a flat response. Go for a natural roll of and don't correct for narrow band dips. Correcting these do far more harm. Also see my review of the MiniDSP HSD Studio (kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKPCoKR8bs-VY5o).

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thanks I saw the speaker placement video. I believe that my speakers are well placed, they do not give many problems in bass (dynaudio C2), rather I have problems with the treble a little clipped (it may be that the tweeter is already old, the Esotar have to be changed after X years) I will first test the apps to see what frequencies give problems Thanks

No, not for low frequencies. Then you would need a gliding tone, synchronised to a tracking filter. The 3rd octave analyser would give about the same reading when using suited music or pink noise (use pink noise, not white noise)
