Lynyrd Skynyrd reunites at Volunteer Jam XIII, ten years after the tragic plane crash which claimed the lives of both pilots, guitar player Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie (one of the Honkettes), roadie Dean Kilpatrick and lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant. Here they performing an instrumental of "Free Bird".

The Lynyrd Skynyrd band were special guest who appeared in 1979 volunteer jam. I think it was volunteer jam V. They did this version of Freebird with Charlie Daniels playing guitar. Allen Collins was still able to play. Leon was there but still had not completely healed from his injuries so he couldn't play with them that night.

This is so hard to watch. My heart is breaking again and again. Now my friend Charlie is in heaven. Musicians of this genre like myself and who remembers the crash, will never get over it. Billy was showing out now!!! The spotlight on the empty mic stand with Ronnie's hat just took my breath. Free Bird is our southern anthem. Whoo!!! Bend them strangs younguns! My heart is crying now. So many greats on that stage have gone on. Those of you that have said you were there? Please treasure this moment for it CANNOT happen again. Thankful for this video

I was there, and it BLEW my mind. Concert of a lifetime. After seeing footage of AC, Ed is technically proficient and does a fantastic job with a difficult solo. It’s still nothing like AC keeping it out on the edge every moment with all the speed and energy. The notes are there, but not the passion. Still damn proud to have seen it. ❤️

He was so frickin fun to watch! Never got to see him in person so getting to see the band on u tube means a lot to me. Makes me sad watchin Gary cause I know it hard to be hard not have Ronnie to stand by in the slow part then Allen when he starts the solo. You can tell they all loved each other. I know they had fights, mostly when Ronnie drank, he was a mean drunk I guess I don't understand why this happened, I know plan ran out of gas but they were really trying to sober up, they didn't always succeed but they really wanted to do better, they had the 3 guitar army back, Steve was a breath of fresh air, he could play, he could write & he could sang. Street Survivors had just come out. They were better than they had ever been & just 10 min from Baton Rouge they ran out of gas. Still heartbreaking even after all this time.

Ed is my favorite guitarist from LS (and the best they had, IMO), but even he couldn't match Allen's solo. Just over one minute into the solo, Allen did some type of semi-auto stab three or four times that blows my mind, but Ed didn't get it here. Just shows how good Allen was at his part.
