Free Bird - The Charlie Daniels Band & Lynyrd Skynyrd - Volunteer Jam V

Members of the CDB and Lynyrd Skynyrd perform an instrumental of the Skynyrd anthem, "Free Bird" at Volunteer Jam V at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN on January 13, 1979. The Jam was the first time the surviving members of Skynyrd had performed together since before the tragic crash that claimed the lives of both pilots, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister (and Honkette) Cassie, roadie Dean Kilpatrick and lead singer, and dear friend of Charlie's, Ronnie Van Zant.

That was the last time the original line up took to the stage as skynyrd.......sad. ide give anything to hear Allen Collins rip that solo in person again. So so forgotten and unknown by today's generation. Everyone knows free bird but bet they couldnt tell ya who Allen is. To me he is among the guitar greats. The best skynyrd stuff is all their catalog that got no radio play. Allen rips it in needle and the spoon, his version of cross roads, wino........hell he kills it in all the songs.

RIP Allen, personally my favorite guitarist. Grateful that we are able to listen to the one of a kind type of talent he was. Whether he was rippin on his Firebird or Explorer you could tell Allen was playing by his unique style and tricks. There will never be another one like him. You could tell Clapton had influenced him, obviously with the Crossroads cover but the solos in Needle and the Spoon as well with the wah pedal. Glad for all the Skynyrd music we have but I can only imagine what more awesome music would’ve been created had the plane not went down. Street Survivors was the album that was gonna kickstart the prime of their career and if you didn’t know who LS was at the time, you sure were going to find out soon... RIP

Allen Collins Was always the guy up front giving 150 percent at every show. Both he and his long time friend Gary Rossington never failed to satisfy. Ed Kings song writing and guitar work were a great part of LS sound. The ex-marine Artimus Pyle was indeed the powerhouse Drummer Double Bass that made it all happen. Next to the original Allman Brothers Band, they were one of the hardest hitting live bands of their era that to me ended in 1977.

MCA Records dropped the ball back in 1979 when they should have released this great live instrumental recording of "Freebird". This, by all accounts, should have been Skynyrd's last actual recording. If "Freebird Live (instrumental)" had been released as a single & marketed as "The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band & The Charlie Daniels Band", this single would've zoomed up the Billboard Hot 100! This should've been released as a two-sided single in '79! :-)

This still gives me chills. I was in Nashville listening to VJ-V on the radio live. We had no idea this was going to happen. We had some guys from Jacksonville with us and when LS came on, we ran outside and turned on all the radios in our cars and listened to Free Bird as loud as it would go. Once in a lifetime event.

I never got to see the original band...too young...but I did get to see this Volunteer Jam V performance on my little 13" black & white tv back in 1979 when PBS aired the full concert. It was a huge deal to me at the time as I was just becoming a fan and had recently picked up the guitar, inspired by all of the Skynyrd guitarists. It was amazing to watch these guy who had survived the plane crash, back on stage playing again...and sad to think of those who didn't make it.

I was there. When they played that instrumental version of Freebird and the spotlight lit that mike with a hat like RVZ wore everyone blistered their fingers with their old bic lighters. There wasn’t 3:15 a dry eye in the house. Imagine a whole audience full of country boy rockin heads ballin their eyes out. It was the singularly most poignant moment in the annals of Volunteer jams in particular and also Southern Rock. We never suspected that Skynyrd would ever take the stage again. @@darracooper7937 me too. From what I have read, obviously they all took it hard but Ronnie, Gary, Allen were the original 3 along with Bob Burns & Larry Junstrom. Ronnie was like a father, a brother, mentor to them. Allen looked in physical pain at 1st, either that or was grimacing tryin to hold back the tears. They lived with the physical & emotiinal pain & survivors guilt, Gary still does. I didn't see Leon play, had arm in a sling, I know he had severe nerve damage & held his bass almost vertical, only way he could play. Miss these guys so much!. Gary just had another emergency heart surgery so wish him well.

Today while buying tickets to the 40th Anniversary Volunteer Jam in August 2013, I remembered more than just Ronnie Van Zant and shared with some friends the experience of being at Vol Jam 5 back in 79. One of the BEST concerts EVER! I was in High School @ HHS on the first real date with the love of my life and several friends. I remember that introduction by Charlie was right after a intermission. Usually they would turn the house lights on and off 2 or 3 times before the next band came out to play so everyone could get back to their seats. On this occasion Charlie came out and the house lights stayed off with only a single light on him. I will never forget what he said. "we would like to introduce again a band that has been off the scene way too long, thank God their back, from Jacksonville, Florida.............." We could not hear the rest of what he said, the roar was deafening. The instrumental only rendition of Freebird with the spotlight on a empty mic was EPIC! Everyone was crying, hugging and holding their lighters high like candles. CDB's historic last song, on the last stop of the touring season, the "Tennessee Waltz" was so special that night everyone was slow dancing (I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz) in the isles and outside in the hall ways. What a great time to be a teenager in Music City at the epicenter of the Southern Rock movement. That concert was a defining moment for several of us. One of our friends later became a writer for Rolling Stone magazine and currently writes for "Bill Board" magazine back home in Nashville. It solidified my Southern Rock roots, I later married the love of my life, traveled the world, had three kids and returned home to H'ville. August 12 we will celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary at the Volunteer Jam. How freaking cool is that? Thanks for the memories Charlie!!!

All my friends from my teens and 20s are passing. But I have been blessed to see unbelievable music live (in person ) from the original LS lineup , CDB, The Outlaws , Molly Hatchet, Henry Paul, Blackfoot, Allman Brothers, and too many other southern rock legends. I am a blessed man!

I was there that night. Not a dry eye in the house, inc. my own. A buddy of mine was at rehearsals the night before, but was sworn to secrecy for obvious reasons.

Skynyrd helped form the lives of millions who knew the music and what it mean. Loved them from the first time and still love listening to the music today. The music is timeless and lives on through the existing members of the band today. No matter what the age, ask anyone you come across and all will agree some of the best songs ever written. Live on Lynyrd Skynyrd ! We love you and miss the ones who started this movement of Southern Rock.

The best performance of this song. Forget that some notes are off, or there are some timing issues here and there. The emotion that permeates this version is what makes it special. This should have been the end. Dignified.

I remember seeing this years ago and have kept looking for it so thank you. The most haunting version of this great song ever. You know every band remembers hearing this in Hell House and hearing Ronnie deliver it home. God I miss those days.

The first concert I ever went to was skynard at the age of 14 in 1974. After that I saw any southern rock band that got near me in SC. Including Skynards last show in Greenville. No better groups than all of those from back then.

Cheers for that! What a wonderful surprise. Watching your videos make me feel like I'm back in the 1970s again and what a feeling that is. You only really appreciate these guys after they're gone. Wow!! This video is great to see once again. I was lucky enough to have seen LS in 1975. And CDB a few times in the late 70’s. Those days in my youth were the greatest. I’m 68 now and still listen today. Thank you for posting this time piece.
