I'm having a hard time understanding why the graphic at 8:30 is showing three separate networks. At home, if I connect 3 different switches to my router, the switches (and their connected clients) are still part of the same network and will all receive IPs in the same range. This applies in a business setting too...many switches are connected to the router and all the devices on those each of those switches are part of the same network. I guess I'm confused about where a LAN starts and stops and the more I google it, the more confused I am. 😥

What if I configure a network within class C (range 192 - 223), let's say for example 192.168.0.0, however instead of configuring it with network prefix /24 (as per class C standard), I configure it with network prefix /16. Would it still be considered a class C network, or changing the network prefix would also change its class to class B?
@JeremysITLab4 жыл бұрын
The classes are determined by the range of the first octet, so it would still be class C. However, you aren't free to assign whatever IP addresses you want, if your company is assigned a class C network (/24), but you decide to configure a /16, your network will overlap with any other network beginning with 192.168 and you will be in violation of your contract with the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). Now, there are private IP address ranges that you are free to use only within your internal network (actually, 192.168 is one of those ranges, so in this case you would be safe), but I will cover those later in the course.
