"Learn if for the real world" ... THANK YOU for saying this. See a lot of people trying to cut corners with certifications after the CCNA (wanting labs already built, want sandboxes already built, asking "whats the fastest was to do x", wanting someone else to build their study guides). I keep preaching that CCNP is not a cert you get just for a Cisco badge - it's a cert you get because you are serious about your career. Can really tell that you are passionate and knowledgeable about this subject. You are so honest with us about the reality of network engineering. Props!

David, I have to say, you're my motivation and I admire the knowledge you have. Before studying Computer Science, I already love programming in Python (I've learnt it time ago) and now I'm getting the juice out of it with my networking career. My biggest concern is that I have somewhat experience on network, have a minimum of knowledge of Python (I even have loads of interesting scripts, that I would be glad to show you) but I do not have a certification...I usually work with Cisco Catalysts, Nexus, SMB's and even other brands..but, I don't have nothing to prove what I know... I'll try my best to get at least my CCNA and Devnet certs. In overall, I just wanted you to know that I rarely comment on videos but I had too... I really, really appreciate your work. THANK YOU.
@davidbombal

Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that :) The problem is that to get past most recruiters and HR, you will need some paper. So, to get to the interview, you need to get past them first. So, get the papers to get the job interviews where you can show people how much you actually know. Otherwise, publish content github and linkedin and other places so people can see what you know. Those are the two paths to success = either share or get papers, or better, do both.

Agreed Robert - sometimes the best thing to do is to find a project or something that interests you and then create code for that. Just copying code is pointless if you don't understand what the code is doing...

@@davidbombal Hi David, The short answer is, no. I don't think that your content is typically that way, but i do think that is a rampant problem on youtube. I am subscribed to a few carefully chosen channels for learning and guidance as a network professional. Of those channels, yours is my favorite because the length of your videos is always reasonable in respect to the subject matter, and they are dense with information. one of my biggest complaints with my formal education was always that IT concepts can be very abstract and this in combination with thousands of acronyms can make certain things not only difficult to learn, but also intimidating. I would ask you on behalf of the next generation of "senior" admins to continue to do what you're doing and present complex information in a clean and concise manner. I appreciate that you break down those acronyms and concepts with easy to understand analogies. This removes a lot of the anxiety that surrounds diving into studying new and emerging technologies. Sorry for the long response, but wanted to give you a well thought-out and non-hyperbolic reply.

@davidbombal
@davidbombal 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bonito. I am just old and have many years of experience in IT :) Having lots of experience and trying to learn something new every day makes a big difference. One thing that I do differently to others is that I don't watch TV. That saves me a huge amount of time. Other people spend a lot of time watching TV (Average American watches something like 4 hours of TV / online content per day). I don't. I may watch a bit of NetFlix / Amazon Prime, but I don't spend hours and hours every day watching TV. That makes me a bit boring, but means I can learn stuff more quickly.

Thanks for the knowledge and advice David. While I am in the process of learning my CCNP, should I pause that and do DevNet first then come back to learn CCNP, base on your suggestions from the video? Thanks for your help as always.

I am what I suppose you would call an old style networker, I have absolutely no knowledge of Programming, and find myself totally lost, and to be truthful I feel that my days as an Networker are over. This is a daunting thought at 54 yrs. old.

People can program at any age. It's no different of a skill to pick up than using another vendor's router or doing Linux.

We are not doing full blown programming, but rather network automation and scripting initially. You have probably just like me had to learn lots and lots of new technologies in your lifetime... I remember analog modems, Frame-Relay, ATM, IPX, ISDN and a lot of old technologies that are no longer relevant. Just try to learn something new every day and you will be surprised how much you can pick up.

As a programmer who changed his focus from web development to networking, I feel like I am lucky in this regard. You may or may not know this about programming in other things (web development), but "High Level" JavaScript frameworks become quickly obsolete after months & years mastering them. Examples are EmberJS, Angular version 1, BackboneJS, and all of that. Now with this new JavaScript called Svelte in 2019, past frameworks are becoming less cool for employers. That's the thing with this "high level" abstractions, whereas the beautiful and fun low level hardly ever changes (plain JS, or my favorite Win32 API from the 1980s). Networking has these wide sweeping changes but not as fast as web development, thankfully

I understand the frustration. It feels like just when one understands something, the world changes. I think Python will be around for a long, long time so it is best language to learn at the moment. Definitely agree with your point however - I have had this experience about lots of technologies over the years including the various SDN controllers. I spent a lot of time learning some of the SDN Controllers and they are just not relevant today. But, I can still leverage the knowledge and experience of the past for new things.

@@davidbombal Exactly! And I have full faith that Python will last for decades or more because it is the best language out there currently, thanks to Guido Von Rossum & others. I was coding using Win32 API (meant for C/C++) and I had to use the Ctypes Module in Python and not C++ just to speed things up and get something going & something to show for it pastebin.com/brQUepmb Of course when speed gains are necessary the Python code is ported into C++. I am lucky as a programmer leaving web development that programming is becoming more integrated with Networking. From the beginning I was wondering why it wasn't programmed many years ago, now it's happening! I just hope that network engineers make this transition as I learn their domain more

Could you do a quick comparison between the DevNet Associate 200-901, and the ENAUTO 300-435. Am I correct in assuming that, although the 200-901 isn't required to sit the 300-435, having it would be highly advisable?

If you have the time and energy, study both at the same time - the knowledge from each course will help you with the other course. But, some people work better focusing on one goal and then the next. Just depends how you study. Some people would spend 80% of their time on CCNA and 20% on DevNet for example. Just do what works for you. But, nothing stopping you studying both at the same time.
