been a protools user since it was 4 track on a mac se30. this is the first daw that i would take into a major session, and not worry about work flow. in fact with apollo interface, the stuff you can do is amazing. and its freakin plug and play, no messing around with setups. blew me away.... the new windows version is still BETA. but it works on my desk in my office without any issue. ryzen 7! no sound card. just asio4all... get me off of avid thank you.

Sanjay C you always do great reviews! You're the one that started me using Ableton haha. I'm now considering Luna for windows. My only honest problem I have is that it doesn't support VST2. I use Studio Linked Trophies by Bryan Michael Cox and it looks like I would have to give that up. But shape does sound very good. I'm on the fence, please push me. haha I have an update.... If you open up Komplete Kontrol you can still use your VST2!! I might pull the trigger now

If you're on Windows stick with Reaper or Studio One. I used Cakewalk SONAR for years. Midi editing was its strength but Reaper now has most of the features I used in SONAR. Still not perfect. When Gibson killed Cakewalk I spent a year with Studio One and Reaper. Although Reaper has a higher learning curve it is a better DAW. Glad I went with Reaper. Bandlab rescued Cakewalk but I'll never go back to it.

Yo, Sanjay C! How's Dharti? Please send her my regard, love and positive energy :) I want to give a heads up and remind your viewers to save a fresh backup before installing LUNA on a Windows PC. I installed it yesterday on one of my rigs and had several issues that immediately arouse. 1. Graphics card driver corruption when using more than 2 monitors. (2 of 3 worked, while 3rd suddenly vanished with no solution) 2. Audio routing would not populate between Clarett+ 4Pre, a corruption in Focusrite driver occured that I have not seen before. Sound throughput was present while no metering visible. 3. Windows didn't play well with LUNA processes and spiked RAM usage. I had to restart Windows with the option to start with advanced options, allowing me to reset Windows back to the time prior to the installation of LUNA. All issues resolved. My Ableton/FX RIG: Windows 11 Pro Intel i7 - 9700K @5ghz 128gb RAM NVIDIA 3060 12gb OC Focurite Clarett+ 4Pre

I'm not sure about Luna, getting mixed messages about its future. Calling it free but at the same time saying "try the beta" just sounds like a time limited thing. Why would I invest a ton of time trying to learn something which might then be a paid license when it goes RTM, only to then decide that the price isn't worth moving away from your old DAW. Then you've wasted days of your life getting the hang of this. Don't think I've heard anyone say it'll be free after beta yet.

The work flow and look is very similar to Cubase so it suits me as a second DAW. Lunas features seem basic at the moment but I love the quality. I hope the price does not increase with the future updates.

I tried Luna in Windows, it failed to recognise my built-in audio device no matter what I tried - think it may be ASIO only but can't tell. It recognised the Ableton Push driver though. As usual Ableton free always works just fine on my system, as does Presonus DAW. A shame as I'd really like to try it out.

It’s amazing but horrible at the same time. It’s protools in a better way and I was all for moving over. But until they they change the file system to “SAVE AS” Until then I won’t touch it again. Saved projects were crazy GB’s worth of storage compared to other daws. And UA’s answer to this was just bounce stems and delete everything else. 😂

@@SanjayC It's still in its infancy and a lot of productivity features are missing. But the sound is really great with those tape saturation, API channel strips and Neve summing plugins inserted on each track. It requires some training to be mastered. IIt's not really for music composers, but rather for audio enginneers doing mixing. I think one possible combination would be to use Cubase or similar DAW for composing and then move to LUNA for traditional console-oriented mixing.

I'm just getting started in songwriting and I did download reaper. I have a complaint. Every time I've opened it, the pay screen pops up. I would rather register as a user and if I decided to be regular user after 60-day complimentary period, then pay but not have to see the screen every time before then. As it is, I am using Cakewalk. My needs are extremely simple.

i feel like it will be the same as when i insalled Verve.. that unviversal audio installer popping up in the corner of windows asking to buy more products like once an hour, even when i have my DAW open in Reaper.. that's what Verve plugin did to us.. i removed it. Hard pass on this DAW, also saw a review saying it's no good... I would suggest ppl use Ardour as a first free DAW. it's great, it even runs on Linux.. so you can install Linux and Ardour or Linux and Reaper even on a steamdeck game system. it's neat.. Cakewalk is still free too, 30 years going strong.

I enjoy Luna a lot for its analog sound and great sounding instruments included in Shape for sure ! I used to use 2” tape which was amazing! I still prefer Logic 11 and Cubase 13 overral due to is far better midi editing as I am a pianist / keyboardist . I enjoy NI Komplete system and like the new Session guitar sounds! It’s big!

As for LUNA on Windows, I would argue. I wouldn't even call it a release. They are sharinga beta version with many serious bugs, I'm not sure if it can even be called a beta version. For free... well, that's not true either ;) The Beta stage is all about using users' time to test and help with bug fixes, so it actually takes a lot of your most valuable resource, real work, and being able to tolerate the pain of freezing and hanging things ;) Personally, I don't have the time or inclination to do this and I already have excellent, working, great Windows DAWs like Reaper (very cheap for small/home studios), Cakewalk for Bandlab (still free), or Studio One. The last 2 of them have integrated capabilities for summing or using things like tapes etc, in addition to the usual in-channel inserts (Pro Chanel or Mix FX)... I also have almost all the native UAD plugins if flavors of them would be something I would need for any reason. Also from a functional point of view or capabilities it is in the same class. So honestly, for someone who does not have UAD interfaces, there is no single advantage to LUNA so far, even if it is a final and bug-free product ;) But either way, sure, I keep my fingers crossed for their success. Maybe in a year or two I'll check their progress so I can have another DAW that works on both MAC and PC, I could see an advantage in that regard.

I used to think Reaper was cr*p until I really explored it's features. I used it, for example, as a live virtual mixer and the kind of routing it allows is incredible, no other DAW comes close to even touching Reaper for mixing.

I don't care how good Luna is or isn't, since I won't be trying it. Why not? Because the UA Installation Manager for Windows is SO intrusive. I purchased a couple of UA plugins, but wound up uninstalling them when I uninstalled their installation app after it p'd me off one too many times. Luna is trying to become a combination of Harrison's Mixbus GUI with Apple's Logic Pro features and functions. But still I prefer Logic Pro for Music Production & Audio Pre-production and Mixbus for Audio Post-production. I do use UAD plugins during Audio Production that I have purchased. But I am not using Luna because it lacks many features that Logic Pro and Mixbus have and the ease of working with it (not user friendly as compared to Logic Pro and Mixbus). I tried Luna to produce my music but it need to include more features and functions to attract more Windows users specially.

I just hope the ASIO bug will be addressed some time soon because I am not investing in a UA interface anytime soon just to get LUNA working on Windows. LUNA itself looks like a nice addition to the free DAW market space though.
