Next, examine any vertical "slice" of these graphs: any place where the red line is under the green line represents a point where x < x|x| . And expanding this thinking to ranges, the red line is under the green line for values where x > 1, and values where -1 < x < 0 . In other words, if it is true that x < x|x|, then the only valid ranges for x are x > 1, or -1 < x < 0
