In the summer of 2012 I was a 1st Lieutenant in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 5th Marines. My job was the Fire Support Team leader and liaison to our partner Afghan National Army rifle Company, who lived in a separate base about 60 yards from our patrol base. The ANA Company was led by a guy named Major Jalwan, who was so old he was a veteran of the Russian Afghan war, except this guy fought on the side of the Russians. A few minutes before my first meeting with the Afghan Commander, I was prepped by the outgoing liaison, Captain America. (I don’t remember his name) This guy was at least 6’5, looked like he played pro football, and had a chiseled face that would make Chris Hemsworth insecure. This was his 3rd combat deployment in 4 years as an officer, and his next stop was Quantico, where he’d become an IOC instructor. (This basically means he was the cream of the crop) This is what he said, “When we get inside you’ll see a couple of chai boys serving food and drinks to all of us. They belong to Major Jalwan. One of them is around 13, and the other is around 10. It’s gonna be weird, its gonna feel gross, you’re probably gonna get angry and want to kill everyone. Don’t worry, that's a totally normal reaction to seeing young boys who are technically sex slaves getting fucked by an old man. But here’s the deal, we’re not here to change their culture. We have a job to do, and that’s to pacify this area from Taliban rule, that’s our focus. If you want to talk about it afterwards I’m happy to talk through it with you, because this really is shitty, and gross. I experienced all the things I mentioned to you, and I imagine all good men will, but we gotta stay focused on building a healthy relationship with this scumbag, because that will help us accomplish our mission of giving this country back to them with no Taliban. Any questions?” I said, “um, is he really fucking them or do they just do all his chores and shit?” “Nope, he’s really fucking them, and it’s disgusting. But again, we’re not here to change their culture. And if you’re feeling angry, don’t put your hand on your pistol, it’ll unnerve everyone, and we don’t want that.” I took a deep breath and said, “roger that sir. Let’s do it.” Into the ANA base we went… Major Jalwan appeared to be kind, welcoming, caring, and genuine. The reality was, his loyalty shifted with the wind, he’d say whatever he needed to get he wants, and he’d mean it. He took a percentage of his soldiers’ salaries, because in his mind, “that’s the way it goes,” and he definitely had sex with his chai boys. Upon meeting the chai boys I experienced everything Captain America said I would. My body got hot, then cold, I shook a little, sweated, and thought of a few ways I could kill all the Afghans in the room, including the chai boys. It was weird… After a few days with Major Jalwan, I got over the weirdness, and fell back on my normal coping mechanism, comedy. Because laughing about it was way better than feeling as miserable as I did. This cold open is my way of slapping my gov’t leaders in the face with a handful of their own stupidity. F$ck you for making us sit face to face with child rape. F$ck you for making me hug and befriend old men who kept child sex slaves. How did you ever think this war was winnable? Did you ever consider the mental toll this would take on us? How could you be so stupid…. Meeting our Afghan counterparts was awkward and uncomfortable. We wanted to embrace them, respect them, love them, and be excited to fight alongside them. Unfortunately, it was damn near impossible to respect them because they not only sucked at just about every aspect of warfighting, but they didn’t seem to care about their country. Some of them would say they did, they’d talk shit about the Taliban, and say things like, “I hate Taliban, I kill all of them. I will kill Taliban until the day I die.” Then that same guy would be high on post, sleeping on post, not paying attention on patrol, not come out from behind cover in a firefight, he’d sell his military gear to the local bazaar, he’d siphon his own gas and sell it in the bazaar, and definitely, would not waste his time training. So without respect, we couldn't love them, embrace them, nor be excited about working with them. Instead, the opposite occurred, and we resented them for their apathy. We resented them for all the reasons listed above, because after all, “HOW COULD YOU NOT TAKE THIS SHlT seriously?! This IS YOUR COUNTRY!!!” “We’re willing to DIE FIGHTING FOR YOUR COUNTRY!!! DO YOU FUCKING SEE THAT?” It was maddening to feel like we cared about their country more than they did. Sadly, it brought out the worst in us, and understandably so. When we’d hear reports of ANA and ANP getting smoked, some of us would laugh maniacally, because on some days, the thought of them dying was therapeutic. It made me think, “that’s what you get you piece a shlt.” Some days we’d hear over the radio that an entire police unit abandoned their post, literally handing it to the Taliban. Other days we’d see an ANA or ANP unit abandon their patrol. It got depressing. So, like a good warrior, I channeled my disappointment into either anger or comedy, and that helped me get through the war. Looking back on it, I feel terrible for feeling that way towards another group of people, let alone my allies. I wish the powers above me had a more accurate picture of the battlefield as we were fighting the war, maybe some things would've changed, maybe not. Love and xoxo, Donny O’Malley

The various politicians who ran the country during the 20 years of this war regardless of what party they belonged to in my opinion are traitors. They sacrificed the lives of thousands of soldiers and marines for their own political ambitions; they made decisions not based on what’s best for our men and woman in uniform but for their own selfish need to advance their political agendas/careers. Just my opinion.

I just don’t get how an army could be that incompetent across the board. It seems like only the Commandos and rare giga chads like Jamsheed the rpg guy were any help. Was it our fault? Theirs?
