Disclaimer and Context - This series was written by combat veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They served as infantrymen at the tactical level and experienced the futility and pain of a poorly-executed counterinsurgency campaign first-hand. This piece of art is a reflection of their thoughts, feelings and true-life experiences during this generational conflict. Letter from the creator: Regarding the torture scenes - What we saw in Afghanistan confused us daily. We watched our Afghan Army and Afghan Police brothers keep chai boys in their patrol bases. We watched them do drugs on base, and I’ve heard stories of ANA and ANP torturing Afghan prisoners who were supposedly Taliban. (Never witnessed it. I was once offered the opportunity to torture a prisoner but respectfully declined. I’ll explain that one later.) I never understood the hypocrisy of our policies in Afghanistan, but the pain that our hypocrisy caused me will always bring me to my darkest comedy. This line represents the stupidity of the Afghan war perfectly. “I can stick my d**k in the a** of a child, but I can’t stick barbed wire up a druglord's a**?” Regarding the confession scenes - You’ll be happy and disappointed to know that all the confessions to chaps were based on true stories. Which makes you wonder, how do good men get to the point where all this stuff is not only normal, but hilarious? It reinforces the point we made in episode 1 of Let’s Talk about the War, which is that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or how you were raised. When you’re in the trenches of a nasty war, you’re gonna turn into a fucking ANIMAL. It just be like that sometimes. Love and xoxo Donny O’Malley

I'm glad you have a platform to be able to talk about your experience. Although it may be f*cked up there's many brave men and women in uniform that aren't here to even talk about it anymore. War is a f*cking terrible situation no matter how you look at it. I'll be straight up and admit that I never served. But I'll always be proud of you that did. I have many veterans in my family and I've heard some messed up s*it since back from the Korean era. We all know a lot of these conflicts were screwed up situations sometimes. And I know it sounds cliché as f*ck but I really do appreciate every single one of you for your service especially the ones that didn't come home. Thank you for sharing your stories to help remind us normies the reality of war so we can try to avoid this for future generations even though I'm well aware that probably won't happen.

The worse part of all of this - is they expect you to train to kill, to go through the horrors of war - then come back home and be perfectly normal. You do not turn off killer instincts that easy. Damn, that part about culture, that hits hard. I can kind of see how that also applies to America in some ways. Also reminds me of what Kratos in God of War 4 said: "In war, a soldier see's beauty in the death of his enemies. The rest of him is lost, sometimes never to be found." Thanks for making this series guys. Even if it's just short clips, I've learned more about war from here than anywhere else. When it comes to dramatic series and trials involving these things, reality gets lost in, "rhetoric" I want to say, and emotion and just lots of bullshit. Here, you say it as it is. Brutally and simply.

My military experience is limited to the National Service, then obligatory, i carried out in my country of origin 34 years ago. Never seen action, never seen combat. Sounds a whole lot like "Just think what the Wehrmacht grunts go through." It's fucking torture. 50% bet you had the wrong guy. Fucking US courts execute innocent people in the sterile frame of bureaucratic process and you think you got it right? And the very next day those kids blow themselves up to kill the literal devil Americans, and they ain't wrong. This shit is a part of US failure in Afghanistan. Brass should not allow any of it. You should either die like Christ there, or GTFO. The political goal was to die like Christ, hearts and minds. But if this shit was anywhere close to the reality on the ground, then grunts acting against the political goal of the campaign doomed it to failure.
