JL's Tree Service: / @jlstree
I work with Joe from JL's Tree Service as he removes a giant 100 year old tree from the back of an urban property which is past it's prime. For safety, the tree is removed and recovered for 1 year's worth of firewood. We use a giant crane, a wood chipper, chainsaws, grappling trucks, and more to make quick work of this massive Norway Maple tree.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

That was so kool to watch that hugh tree come down piece by piece and realize just how heavy each piece was and think about how much damage it could of done if it cracked and actually fell on one of the houses! So since we didnt get to see it, what happened to the stump? Did someone come and cut it lower? Did it get ground up? Pulled out? Blasted out? Too bad it had to come down but I get it. All the damage the snow and ice can do to crack and split the tree apart year after year. Poor tree it had a good life.

Another good one Kevin. My grandfather taught me to split wood exactly like you do. He was watching me split wood once when I was 17 ( I'm 58 now) he watched until I think it was painful and he had this way of twitching his cheek when he got irritated and finally said "boy. You split wood like old people make love; give me that axe" he proceeded to split from the outside in and it was nothing for a 78 year old man to split a 75yearold tree in no time. I later learned old people make love ' slow and sloppy'

Love this vid- as much as I love watching you and Don (and sometimes WoodBeard) build cool and crazy stuff on your property, I personally love the tree and firewood material, and from Florida there’s not much need for that much firewood - not for heating anyway. Probably a unique perspective on my end… but I will say I can’t find firewood anywhere for the past 2 weeks, and tonight is the first night in … YEARS… it’s gonna be below freezing. Still loved the whack off and general tree and firewood stuff. Also thinking some of those pieces would make great tables, etc!

@@ModernSelfReliance So what happens to the chips, wood pellets for pellet stoves or composted? We had an Alaskan yellow cedar taken down by a service, and our logs were about 10 foot long and some friends had a chainsaw mill to make boards and a few slabs for making furniture... the wood was a bit pricey so my sister was into getting it set up for air drying... I had worked in a lumbermill that did both air and kiln drying.

@@ModernSelfReliance I just ordered a baby Solo Stove Lite... yesterday. .. impressed by how small of dry bio fuel I can use ...when I prune the apple trees the smallest twigs get dried for fuel. I have even tested them with wood pellets for heating a wok. And and old pine that we left a 10 foot stump standing for a decade or so was rotting enough where had to take the half whiskey barrel flower pot off the top of it... even the woodpeckers lost interest in nesting in it. The stump rotted to the point where I use the dry rotted wood for bio fuel for cooking in my Solo Stove camp stoves... they are ridiculously efficient at burning. A wok with a lid on the Campfire is maybe a bit heavy for hiking, but yard camping I can cook a lot on it.

@@ModernSelfReliance hitting stuff in trees, I am retired from working in a lumbermill, Douglas fir and Hemlock mostly (native to Puget Sound region of Washington state).... I did get to have a 6 foot long piece of shrapnel land a couple feet from me when one of the quad mill bandsaw blades blew up hitting something like the railroad spike I took out of another cant hit a blade... not fond of the fools that spike trees. The spike was almost cut through, but those bandsaw blades were 6-9 inches from teeth to back of the blades... they lost a few inches from sharpening. @@ModernSelfReliance My brother-in-law was talking stump grinding the Alaskan yellow cedar we had taken down about a week ago. Not sure if I would bother to watch that either, the chainsaw milling the logs into boards was interesting... some were small cant size lumber that the operators decided they were interested in doing more with...were interesting to move... my first job in a lumbermill was on a timber planer with my dad, he taught me tricks to Jack and leverage timbers into loads for shipping, without damaging the timbers or me. That stuff I also used when pulling 6 inch clears off a planer chain, I also used rollers... I made a roller for stacking the 4 inch by 14 inch by 8 foot "board " we kept with the stack of 10 foot 2 inch boards we kept to dry for my sister's furniture projects... I had her look up the price of Alaskan yellow cedar as lumber... she really got into the idea of doing stuff with the wood... It is not a tree native to Puget Sound region but is at altitude in the mountains just east of us and into Canada. It's a nice tree but it was hard to give a genus species name a bit of an exotic wood.. I did start one from seed and transplant to a place a bit better located... maybe I will see if I can get a few more started.

@@ModernSelfReliance The pine we had taken down a couple decades ago, was a bit buggy and located where it might take out a power line, when I had the power company reroute the powerlines to my house and yard light poles that they wanted to replace anyway... That was a service they did for free, they keep tree services busy to avoid power outages... That pine was about 3 feet through the trunk... got the firewood from that... the buggy and hazard to power lines was a useful service... I also got the western red cedar firewood from the old power poles because it was not treated with anything hazardous... also free they were happy not to have to haul it off... I did build an outdoor cooking fireplace years ago... just stacked cement blocks, pavers, bricks and cut t-posts to hold two shelves and the roof/chimney that were 'paved' with pavers that on the shelves could be lifted out for a grill across the 3 t-posts for each shelf... was cheap to build, not mortar, just stacked up... A few pavers in the multi layer firebox got replaced... but works good for cooking with cast iron.... stews, cake, corn, cornbread... large Dutch oven fits on the lower shelf, 2 quart Dutch ovens fit behind a make do door on the upper shelf. Have done pizzas in the Cabelas 14 or 16 inch skillet and lid on the lower shelf. The pine rounds even 10 feet up were full of fat wood and a bit of a pain to split, but a couple made good chopping blocks... I still have wedges and a spilting axe or maul from that adventure that was educational.

Do you know what he charged for this tree removal? I'm curious what tree removal costs are in Canada compared to the US. Down in the southern states, for all labor and equipment (e.g. bucket truck, chipper/shredder, dump truck, saws, chainsaws, ladders, ropes, etc.), it's about $900 for 12"-24" diameter, $1700 for 24" to 36". Varies a bit based on canopy type/size, and drastically increases based on exposure/nearby standing structures and access issues of course.

You should turn that "california don" into a coffee table. Bit of sanding maybe some epoxy, would be gorgeous. Just a thought. :)

Finally got a Eco Fo River. This is my emergency backup back up electrical. Your use of Eco Flo systems showed me that the system will provide electricity for my CPAP.
