Free Kick Hawthorn was a massive trend in 2016, when the AFL umpires would frequently give biased free kicks to the Hawks to help them win close games against teams such as St. Kilda Saints, Adelaide Crows and GWS Giants. In 2017, free kick hawthorn has died down, and it's no surprise to see hawthorn struggling to work out how to win games. With the constant AFL evolution, it's only a matter of time before the free kick hawthorn trend begins again.

Hawks aren't having trouble winning games just by not getting frees; you can't win three premierships on frees alone. The reason we lose games is because due to the natural cycle of AFL teams: build your team, make your premiership run, your team retires, get good draft picks, repeat.

I seem to remember Hawthorn making a break in the 2014 GF. Gary Rohan was running flat out to get to defensive end. As he passed Brian Lake, he was punched in the head. Umpires, commentators too enthralled with the prospect of a Hawthorn goal to blow whistle/ mention what happened.

Honestly, it's one call... These calls don't make a huge impact on the game and don't ruin the entire season. If you had a look at Hawthorn's Free kicks for and against you would notice they have more Free kicks against then for that were the incorrect decisions. Everyone makes mistakes including the umpires even at a professional level and they can't see everything and they have a split second to make a decision.

I'm still salty about 1:40. There were so many terrible decisions in that game, but that was the icing on the cake. Only lost that game by 3 points because of the umpiring, and we ended up one game out of the 8. If the result was how it should have been for this game, North would have missed finals, Hawks would have fallen all the way to 6th, meaning they would have faced the Western Bulldogs, and Adelaide would have squeezed into 4th. It would have changed the whole dynamic of the finals.

Yes, Shiels doesn't get hit very hard, but it's WHERE he gets hit first, the ump was in perfect position to see that the HEEL of the hand and thumb hit Shiels in the groin while the fingers hit him in the stomach. not that he was TRYING to hit him in the groin, but it's prohibited contact, and that's what the ump called. Try watching the slow motion at 1/4 speed and it's plain to see. A tap where Shiels gets hit will drop any man to his knees.

Sure, the Cryril hit was MOSTLY to the shoulder, but if you think there wasn't SOME contact high no matter how minor you are mistaken. Rioli has a right to have his head over the ball, he wasn't ducking... I have seen a LOT more OBVIOUS ducks being called for high contact. AND the law on high contact doesn't say a little high contact is okay so long as it is incidental, it says NO high contact.

Freekick Hawthorn As an umpire myself, I know for a fact that umpires can’t be biased on the field. Umpires have to watch extremely quickly and pay what they see as soon as they react to it. They have no time to check which team or player the call is for or against. All they can do is pay what they see. I hope this helps.
