I have worked this out, finally. After all these years of following Mustie from far away in the UK. This is a version of the Truman show. Unbeknown to Mustie, he lives in a fictitous, magical bubble. The show's producers arrange for items like welders, dirt bikes, back hoes, and VW minivans to be left at the side of the road, at staged yard sales or donated, just to see what Mustie does with them. I had fallen for it all these years and it is just fabulous.

I have the same welder. I bought it used for $175. It's been a great little welder. It's a bullet proof little unit that has been completely trouble free. I've been using mine for over 12 years and have no idea how old it was when I bought it. I changed out the spool spindle on mine so I could use the larger 10 lb. spool of wire. I've ran well over 100 lbs of welding wire thru mine. I do all my welding outside in my driveway so the flux core set up works great. It's been the best $175 I've ever spent on any tool.

I love it when people put stuff like that out for free rather than just throw it straight in the trash and even are considerate enough to include the parts and manuals with it, because garage geniuses like him get to at least take a shot at reusing them and perhaps save and/or make a little $ in the process. Everybody wins when they do this, even if it turns out to not be fixable and ends up in the trash anyway at least the man to work on it learns some news things and hopefully has fun, and the man whom didn't want it is spared the hassle and expensive of bringing it to the dump. Personally I've gotten some coin operated arcade games and some extremely useful things this way like a generator that I never was going to have the spare $ to get otherwise, and most of the stuff didn't really need much work outside of the cosmetic.

The wire drive wheels are not supposed to slip, they are supposed to grip, which rust does quite well. I think I would leave at least some rust on the drive wheels to increase traction on the wire. it is the inside of the cable sleeve that needs to be nice and smooth.

*FYI* *That was dry white lithium grease for lubricant on the control. After many years of being exposed to air, lithium grease chemically separates apart and gives the appearance of corrosion by getting flaky, and in this case looks like corrosion because it's white and flaky. When you added oil to it, it mixed with with the broken down dry lithium grease enough to relube the control and free it, eventually flushing out the grease. This is a common problem with older electronic controls, they get stuck for this reason, if you would have just flushed it out with electronic cleaner before taking it apart it would have freed it up with no problem then you could have added some more dry white lithium grease spray, but it did make a good video showing the whole process of the inner workings.*

The plastic has OXIDIZED due to its composition or a corrosive environment. Since there is no evidence of corrosion on other parts it is most likely the type of plastic that was used on the adjustment knob. You can clean the oxidation off with a 6% white distilled vinegar (spray on and wipe off). Then, apply a dielectric grease to preserve and lubricate the plastic piece. Great YT Channel by the way. I see time again plastic used .....say... From the 1970s. Work I do with small precision mechanics I see very small worm drive wheels mounted on steel shafts. Well the plastic shrinks over time and that cracks the wheel which creates a gap between the cracked area that fails the devise. Could be it was as usual cheaper to use plastic and not concern themselves with the durability.

51:37 one thing to watch for: these welders do NOT like trying to go through the slag and soot. I saw a couple of times you tried to strike an arc over where you'd welded before, they don't like that. It's a pain to have to pull out the wire brush but it helps. Also: (you prolly know this) the distance the gun is from the base metal changes the "sound" as well. If one setting is too hot, and one too cold, set it on the hotter setting and pull back a bit, you can dial it in that way. If it's a little too "cold" you can move closer and get it a bit hotter. Also: due to the splatter from the flux, splatter shield works wonders. I open up the tub and dip the tip in often, helps keep splatter off the tip. I had a high stress office job and I"d get home frazzled and I'd put on the grubby clothes and run beads. I found it very zen like.

IMO if you need to weld more than 1/4" you should be using a stick welder anyways. I welded up a cart for mine with my supplies in a basket on top, gloves, pliers etc and the mask hangs off the end. I paid $399 cdn for mine back in the late 90's..... I've constantly thought about getting the gas kit but where I live, they want a kidney and your first born for any type of gas. I ran out of acetylene for my small 5 lbs "plumbing" kit and they wanted $200 for the gas and $100 deposit on the bottle. When I lived in the city it was $40.00 and took my bottle as exchange. Up here, they won't accept the bottle in exchange. When he went to write it up I said "umm no, I'll drive to the next town over and get it there". WA WA WHY? Because it's only $40.00. "but your time and gas" yeah, for $260.00 I'll take the time and spend the $10 in gas"..... They're the only place in town so they rape you. The gas IS nice though, a lot less sparking and arcing etc.

Thanks for the great video. I've e had a Lincoln Weldpak 100 since I bought it new in 1995. It has worked flawlessly. I've restored a car, motorcycles and just fabricated a lot. I mainly use it on steel with Argon/CO2 for MIG welding steel. You'd be amazed what you can do with it if you will spend the time cleaning and beveling the steel prior to welding. On the other end of the spectrum, it works great for thin sheet steel.

What an awesome find. I have been a welder for several years and I like the older simpler machines mainly due to not having all of the microprocessors and digital readout to go wacky over time. If my memory serves me correctly, I think at the time that your welder was manufactured that Lincoln Electric offered the upgrade to mig from flux core which had the mig gun and a gas regulator for the gas cylinder and maybe another item or two. A friend of mine had a size or two up front your welder which had the mig upgrade and it was a very nice welding machine that had the larger welder feel to it. I am totally jealous (LOL). Happy Thanksgiving & Best Regards From Kentucky.

Had a 3 year warranty when new. Took it back to shop and scored a brand new welder in box, COMPLETE. Turn out the board had a fault, that’s why previous owner tossed it. So I got a new welder from the scrap bin.

How to know Mustie1 is a well-trained weldor? He pauses at the end of each weld bead to keep the molten metal in the shielding gas while it re-solidifies. Completely unnecessary with flux core welding, but a good habit to keep. I've seen "pro" weldors using MIG and pulling away the torch right after a bead, contaminating the end of the weld bead.

I have that welder too. It's served me well. I added the gas kit but never got around to using it. My knob is getting hard to turn, thanks for doing the investigative work. The two sizes of grooves are for solid (smaller OD) and flux core (larger OD) wire. As you say, when swapping between gas and flux core the two wires to the gun are reversed. To clean some of the rust as the wire feeds try a piece of Scotch Brite folded over the wire just before the feeder. Hold it in place with a spring paper clip so the Scotch Brite rubs on the wire. Don't clamp the clip on the wire itself.

THANKS Darren ! WONDERFUL VIDEO !!! I have the Lincoln 120. It came with the gas kit installed, but the type stuff I do, I DON'T have to fool with the bottle. I'm running ".035" flux-core wire, 10 pound spool. I invested in a knurled groove drive wheel and it shoves the wire much better. I built a steel framed deck and used round top bolts to bolt the deck boards to the frame-work. 1/8 x 2" x 2" angle iron and braced off the 1/4" galvanized posts with 3/8" x 1" flat-bar. That was the biggest project I did with it. With practice, you can lay some nice beads, but you're right. If you are looking for a PRETTY bead, it ain't happening with FLUX-CORE !!! An old friend showed me to tie a small piece of shop rag around the wire, before it goes into the tension block assembly and put some light machine oil on it. Not soppy! When using the knurled feed wheel, you can do that better, because it actually grips the wire. That little bit keeps the inside wire sleeve lubricated, so rust doesn't happen and the wire doesn't resist a loop in the hose! I got an insulated nozzle that keeps the tip from making contact with the metal and kicking the breaker. Use nozzle dip and a nozzle cleaner and that takes care of the CB kicking problem. Lincoln has the best welder for the money! That welder cost about $400.00 new. (mine was $440.00, but it came equiped with the gas package.) Those little welders had just come out. I swapped work for one of them. Over the years, I've had the front two diodes changed out and 6 months later, the back two diodes. It gets lots of use, as welding is one of my many hobbies. Mine looks just like your case and faceplate. It just has the gas package installed and says 120 on it. Great find. And that was a good find about the cigarette package cellophane binding the fan motor! Hang on to that unit. With some practice, you'll fall in love with it! Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

Great find! I have that exact welder, bought it new in the '90s, I believe. They are great as long as you know their limitations. I was able to weld the cracked and broken sheet metal around the window regulator mounting points on a Toyota pickup door back together on power level A, with a few short bursts followed by time to let the door cool. With the gasless tip like you have on this welder, it is very easy to touch the copper tip to the workpiece. I've found it works well to use a gas lens even if you aren't running gas, to help protect the wire tip. One more thing - I see old habits die hard as far as holding the gun near the end of the weld bead for a second or two after stopping the bead. No need to do that with flux core since there is no shielding gas flowing from the gun!
@bryangillis51832 жыл бұрын
It’s supposed to be used with the nozzle on the end. They are not intended to be used without one for the obvious reason of the tip being electrified and is easily damaged by either weld splatter or arcing it out on metal. Always use the nozzle over the tip.

Here's a tip, not that you need it but some viewers might. This was told to me by a panelbeater. The panel/body shop is a dusty and gritty place at the best of times and over time it can get into the conduit as the wire passes through and can jam up and need replacing. To stop this happening, grab one of mums clothes pegs off the line and cut up a small piece of soft cloth. Fold it over a couple of times and place it over the wire between the roll and the feeder. Hold it in place with the clothes peg. This will add life to the conduit. I'm guessing that this gasless welder is Lincoln's entry level model. Lincoln has a good reputation and has been in business for a long time.

Ive kept this exact version on my service truck for at least 20 yrs. Its been really hard to beat for rough welding. Fences, gates, braces and light duty structural. The bad part is each weld needs to be hit with a cup brush on your hand grinder to clean it up AND it tends to leave splatter balls around the weld. The good part is its wind proof, cheap to use, you dont need a tank of gas to drag around and run out at the worst possible time, and you can put in an 11 lb spool so you can weld a darned good amount of weldments. In the shop, Ive got Lincoln and Miller 220 volt welders, for both ferris and aluminum (with Prinze push-pull guns and Cobramatic feeders) but for light work in the field... this is hard to beat and you can run it off a 4000 watt genset without any issues.

I repaired the tap switch in the one my father bought 40+ years ago, it suffered from the same problem, resulting in a spiral breaking of the crappy plastic shaft. Before it broke entirely, I took it apart and center drilled the shaft so I could give it a 1/4" metal spine. I flattened the peaks on the position lock slightly also. Re-drilled the cross pin hole, put it back together, and other than needing to re-mark the positions on the dial face, it worked better than new. They do turn easier if you pull out on the knob a little, but if it is sticking like ^^this one^^ did, that won't be much help. I always thought they overdid the spring tension on those tap switches, especially with those all plastic components. Some periodic TLC on those tombstones will go a long way. Clear out the spiders and mud daubers, maybe some dry type lube to the tap switch shaft and 'exercise' it to make sure it stays free. Cleaning the tap switch contacts also makes starting/holding an arc with the more difficult rods a whole lot easier. A touch of some conductive grease should help protect them from the elements if it doesn't live in a climate controlled building.
