Free-Lining Cut Bait to Catch Catfish (Ft. Realistic Fishing, Panfish)

The light tackle drifting has been on fire. We caught several catfish this day using cut skipjack. We were free-lining the bait with no sinkers. We let the weight of the bait naturally sink down. This presentation seems to entice the catfish to take the bait. We did catch a few catfish on the heavy duty rods suspending our baits 2-4 feet off the bottom. The post spawn is here and the catfish are hungry.

Tackle (heavy tackle suspend drifting): 7.6' Shattered Cat rod with an Okuma Classic XT CLX-300 L baitcaster levelwind reel spooled with 50 lb monofilament line carolina rigged with an 80 lb monofilament leader down to a Team Catfish 8/0 double action circle hook

Joe,that weekend you were there,i forgot to tell you,but that 35 pound blue I caught that sunday had a huge gut like the one realistic landed,and it was spitting out eggs in my boat.Also I had kept 8 channels about 5 pounds to eat and when I cleaned them Monday after getting home i found their stomachs were still loaded with full egg sacks.I don't believe all cats spawn at the same time like a lot of people think.

Yeah most catfish are generally spawning end of May and all of June, but there are still some now that are still spawning

Ive love freelining for cats. Ive used freelining for years, but a long time ago all we had then were channelcats, in my home lake wylie. Thanks for showing this so others can see and learn it. Bigger the bait, the bigger the fish. I was out in a boat with a friend on a lake anchored for the night and I tossed a 6 inch live bluegill out about 100 feet from the boat, cracking open a cold beer. He thought I was nuts. 30 minutes later I was battling with a 29 pound flathead catfish. He couldn't believe it.I drank another beer whilst resting from the battle.

I typically don't eat the catfish from our rivers. Most of them contain heavy metals and PCB's that are not good for human consumption. If I'm bringing home fish it's crappie, shellcracker, bluegill, or spotted bass.

I have not used the Okuma Pro 302L so I can't give you an honest review on them. I do like the Okuma CLX300L reels. They hold up very well.

Jeo I went fishing and I had a big flat head on a 10 inch live blue gill and he went in a huge brush pile that allowed him to get away well to least I got back with 30 masqito bites, 10 blue gill for bait, and 2 flat heads ranging from 16 pounds and 22 pounds.

Moderate current. Water depth in the first half of the vid was 20 ft. Last half of the vid the depth was 30-40 feet

fresh skimpjack? my local baitshop has frozen skimpjack but I've never had much luck with it cut up. Fishing the Mississippi just north of St. Louis mo

It's fresh. I spend time in the Spring months getting around 50 skipjack and vacuum sealing them and keeping them in a chest freezer. I will go through half the year going through all of my bait.
