Barnetto-san is an absolute legend in the ring,on the mats and in life generally speaking. Dude is as cool as a fan. That video of him torture racking a guy and throwing him off the stage while he was security at a rock show was hilarious too. I've always dug and appreciated his commitment to grappling, fighting and pro wrestling. That scarf choke he got Lister with was nice. I train shoot and BJJ, and that scarf choke is a great option from the scarf hold position.

@@LilliamSlasher Watch AEW and then watch WWE and tell me the names of moves don't matter. Excalibur is the best commentator in the business, he knows the history of every wrestler, and he knows all of the moves, AND he helps tell the story of the match and the story of a feud in general. Then there's Michael Cole "Could it be? It is!" "What a throw". It definitely matters. It matters in terms of telling a story and it matters when it comes to giving the product more legitimacy.

@Kabob Brewster absolute BS. First of all Suzuki never fought in Rings. Why would he fight for a rival company when he was a pancrase fighter. Secondly can we please stop this myth that majority of fights in pancrase were works. Yes I am not denying that there were a few works which like Pride FC and Rings is not surprising as they were MMA organisations created on the back of pro-wrestling. Sometimes for the good of business it had to be done. The majority of Suzuki fights were totally legit. Name the fights that you believe were works and we can break it right down! The whole reason Suzuki and Funaki created pancrase was because they wanted to show there skills in non work environment. Suzuki had 30 wins and 19 losses. Are you really trying to claim that if only 5 of them were legit that Suzuki booked himself to lose that many matches. Makes no sense at all!

There's a video of Josh a while back talking about some catch-wrestling techniques he had learned back in the day, and he mentioned Minoru Suzuki as one of the OG's who had a uniquely painful method for riding opponents. Minoru's MMA days are clearly long past, and Josh would obviously decimate him in a real fight, but it's still cool seeing the respect Josh has for one of the most underrated pioneers of modern combat sports.

The whole origin of pro wrestling comes from the idea of taking real men who were trained in some sort of martial art and working (scripting) the matches in a way that simulates a real street fight or what you may see in Bellator/UFC today, but with more polish on their moves and controlling the environment in their favor.

This is what all wrestling used to look like, which is why it was so popular decades ago. All the silly stupid kid stuff really ruined the whole thing, now most people like you who would've liked pro wrestling if you were born in 1950 just think of it as silly stupid kid shit because that's what it is since Vince McMahon ruined the whole thing.

TL;DR Pro wrestling became scripted because [fan favourite wins = big money] and it evolved as a theatrical entertainment show from its legit brothers. You watch like watching a Marvel movie, not as a UFC fight. Pro Wrestling evolved from legit Catch Wrestling (which is like sadist BJJ) along with other grappling styles from the late 1800s-1900s. They made it scripted bc it would make the promoters more money if they book to win the fan favourite, even if his opponent is a far better grappler. This isn't to say that all punches/grapples/throw are fake, it still hurts as hell. As time goes on, it became an escapist platform for the common man [therefore, storylines and the creation of good and bad guys]. If you watch old 70's-80's wrestling, you'll see lots of common people watching, and the "promos" [which are like NPC/character dialogues] are used to stir the audience, whether to inspire or piss them off, and to develop the story being told [either a revenge storyline, underdog from loser to winner, best bros breaking up eventually, or champion standing tall then being easily defeated by a monster]. And when you watch pro wrestling, all those strikes and moves aren't to kill each other (mostly), it's to tell the story being presented [like being graceful initially then striking desperately hard at the latter parts]. So, good story and execution = good pro wres, bad story and execution = bad pro wres.

I'm a boxing/mma fan, but I gotta admit, this was pretty cool. You can tell this is Barnett's true passion. If there were more money in this, he prob would've never fought in the UFC for this long.

That's kind of true. It's how Lou Thesz would have liked you to see wrestling back then, but it looked a lot less serious in the 1910s if you looked at what NYT writers said. Gus Sonnenberg was a huge star by 1930 and leading attraction, and all he did was a shoulder tackle. Goldberg did more in his first year of wrestling

Never heard of this wrestling before. I clicked on it expecting a typical bloody Barnett MMA fight but was pleasantly surprised to find this well orchestrated entertainment form of wrestling. I didn't think Josh had the patience for this but I was wrong. Well done to both of them.
