Nancy, I learned to sew as a teenager but am new to quilting. I was always afraid to try to do the feathers on a border. Your beginner feather teaching in this video was spot-on. I tried it and did it. I am so pleased on how they came out . I was almost afraid as this quilt is going to be a gift, but after a few tries on some scrap, I got it. I even have the same amount on each border side and the same amount on the top and bottom borders. I could not have done this without this tutorial. Thank you

Nancy, you gave me the confidence to machine quilt a twin size quilt. It was a Christmas gift it I was able to get it done in a day! I was blown away. I followed your advice, for the pattern and it worked. The swirl is the ticket for beginners. It was beautiful, the back was impressive. We belong to the same quilt guild in GR, I have taken a couple of your classes. Thank you for passing on your knowledge.

It’s so true about the difference between quilting on a square & quilting on a quilt! Instead of free motion on my inside border, I used a stitch on my machine, which looks BEAUTIFUL on a square. However, the weight of the quilt made it very difficult to manage. But I learned something!

Thank you so much! I have been avoiding feathers for 20 years, but you just gave me the confidence to try them. I was moving my hands on the table as I was watching, and I just made perfect invisible feathers!!! Seriously though, I am grateful for these videos, I learn so much!

I've been watching you for quiet some time but never caught where you were from. I just knew that accent had to be Michigan & when you said Grand Rapids that confirmed it 😊. We lived in Holland for a time. Very cold there! Quilts are a necessity. I plan to master FMQ this year. I've been frightened of it for awhile. I'm still quilting in the ditch or close to it but watching you I'm gaining my confidence to try FMQ. May all the quilting Angel's be with me, 🤣. Happy New Year everyone. Beautiful quilt, btw, and your quilting is phenomenal!!

Thank you for the video. First time quilting on a border, and I am going to try the first loop design you did. I practiced a bit, but now I’m jumping right in like you said. You’re totally right about needing to actually quilt on something besides practice squares - great advice that gave me some confidence to go ahead. Thanks!

Happy New year. Your thumb. I have same problem from arthritis. There are braces that hello without blocking the total use is your thumb. One is call cmc push meta brace. Which I own. There is a cheaper version of it now available on eBay. Also on Etsy there is a PT therapist in Israel that makes cmc jewelry and sells on Etsy. I made my own following her design and they worked. Just wanted to tell you you have other options. You wear that big black thing long enough you learn to hate it. Love your videos. Get well soon!

Happy new year 2020 and we have plans…. Famous last words. 😁. I often get a nest with using the auto thread cutter. Anything particular you do that makes it not leave a messy thread? This was an awesome video, thanks!
@QuiltingWithNancy Жыл бұрын
Depending on the machine, if you hold the top thread as you start, it should help with those nests that happened in the back.

I've tried doing a basting stitch on the outside of my borders and they always pucker. It drives me crazy. I've tried using a walking foot and normal zigzag foot and loosening the foot pressure thinking it might be squeezing too tight. Is there anything you can think of that I might be doing wrong?
@QuiltingWithNancy5 жыл бұрын
Trixy8521 hi. I actually do it with my free motion foot , but it can be difficult to stay straight. The issue can be with your walking foot and every machine is different so ....... lots of choices 😀
@cherylgray58245 жыл бұрын
Do you need a special machine for free motion quilting or can you just use a basic sewing machine?
@brendasierdsma35095 жыл бұрын
Any machine that has the feature/option to lower feed dogs to non-functioning position will work.
@QuiltingWithNancy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl, yep, Brenda is correct - you just need to lower your feed dogs, or set them to a stitch length of zero and put on your darning foot. If you have a local machine dealer they can get you what you need. What brand of machine do you have?
@cherylgray58245 жыл бұрын
@@QuiltingWithNancy I just purchased a previously owned Bernina 210. I live in a small community in Northeastern Utah. We do not have a local dealer. Thank you for your reply.

@@cherylgray5824 - did the machine come with a walking foot? feet for the Bernina's can be kind of expensive.

Hi Penelope - yea, the sound when we do a LIVE video is never that great because there is no microphone, they cost too much - we can't use the normal mic we use for our studio recordings. Nancy

Thanks for a couple of new ideas for borders. I use Clips on the outside of my quilt to hold the edges. Have you used clips? I love how you are not obsessed with perfection. We are all learning and the only way to get better is with practice. I am looking forward to 2020 and your new videos. The volume fluctuates a lot and is sometimes hard to hear but I put my ears to the speaker and my eyes peeled. Thanks.
@QuiltingWithNancy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bugs :) - i think i might find the clips would get in the way but if it works for you keep it up. The sounds - yea, we know. There is no mic that works for doing LIVE videos that doesn't cost an arm and a leg so i just need to speak louder :) Nancy
