Great video! I love the enthusiasm Amanda has for quilting on a domestic. I FMQ on a semi industrial machine. It is my greatest joy in quilting. I consider it a dance with the machine. I listen to music as it acts as a sort of metronome for me. Keeping my rhythm. If you make a true commitment and practice, you will gradually see improvement and find yourself dreaming up all kinds of designs for FMQ.

Best tip....making sure I don't expect my work to look like it was done on a long arm machine or done with a machine that has a regulated speed. 2nd best tip...listen to the machine. I do NEED to get some gloves. I FMQ on a small domestic brother with no speed regulation or extension table. It's not easy, but it's fun.

It never failed when i started free motioning id be meandering along all nicely and BAM!!! my brain and hands would take a sharp right turn, i practiced on a ton of quilt sandwiches before i was calm and relaxed… but even now i go ahead-and make some loops on purpose so looping can be my jam

This is great. Thank you. A friend introduced me to ruler work before I tried FMQ and now I'm struggling to try free motion because my brain is trying to make everything uniform and symmetrical. Thank you for the tips!!

Awesome video. Helped me so very much. I am probably an intermediate quilter on my brother bq3100. Stitch length and foot pedal speed helped me as well as foot height. U want to get brace enough to try more intricate stitches.

I avoided mine too. I kept telling myself I will never be able to do those beautifully quilted quilts and I was right. I don't do intricate beautiful quilts (but I want to) but are done with loops, lines, and swirls, and that's it for now. Everyone loves them and that's what counts.

@@terribishop5313 So, you do like meandering loops? I keep watching all these KZbin videos and they are mostly way out of my league….I don’t even know where to start! Lots of them say to practice on paper, well I can draw that stuff on paper and it doesn’t really look like it should. I guess I’m going to have to ruin a few, but that’s tough to swallow when you have all that time and money in them. And I’m not looking for perfect, I will settle for mediocre! Thanks for the reply…..I’m happy I’m not alone.

@Str8eeth Yes meandering loops. My very first try was slow gentle waves across, then back the same gentle waves on a quilt I actually finished. Confidence builds slowly, master one pattern, then move on. I took my odd practice blocks I'll never use and put them together for a practice quilt. Got clearance and half off fabric at Joannes to practice on. Many a night, I "literally" went to bed and cried ready to give up. It takes practice and time. Just when you get into a rhythm, your thread or needle breaks twice in a row. Turn on your favorite music and go for it. I got mine to finish quilts, but it sure would be nice to do feathers.. until then... or maybe never. KZbin videos help, but most all aren't beginners. Hang in there, you'll conquer 💗

@@terribishop5313 Thanks so much…just knowing that others struggled at first (which I’m sorry about) makes me feel like I’m more like others than I thought. Oh how I wished you lived in Utah and I could co,e watch you for an afternoon and pick your brain. You’re such a sweetheart, happy quilting my friend!

I love the tip it’s ok to cross over your quilting… it’s ok to make mistakes. We aren’t machines. Love that tip if only I could implement in my head! Ananda is a great teacher. I have her rules but again afraid to try.

Loved this video. Thank-you. I have been trying to learn free motion on my domestic machine for years. And I can’t get the mind, eye, hand coordination. I doodle on a plexy glass with dry erase marker, with no problem but can’t get it at machine. I’ve learned many pointers from this video that I’m going to try. It’s like this gave me permission not to do a lot of things I do wrong. I realize the biggest mistake is focusing on moving my hands and I need to focus on moving my arms. So again Thank-you

I have a longarm, but this is very informative advice. I am gonna practice on my Janome M7 ! I always had trouble moving the fabric, but moving the arm of a longarm seemed more natural to me. Not sure if that is a thing with most people??

I free motion on my M7 and find a combination of the slider, quilting grips instead of gloves and rolling my quilt to better handle the bulk. And basting well.
