Free-motion Quilting with a Singer 7285Q Patchwork Machine

Free-motion quilting with a domestic sewing machine is possible, but you have to have your machine set up correctly. In this video I am demonstrating how to free-motion quilt with my Singer Patchwork sewing machine as requested by viewers.

This is what I am still working on. My quilting is going to have to be done on my machined, the expense of a long arm or paying someone is not in the cards. I have almost mastered do falling hearts,doing leaves, echoes and straight line work. My quilts will be for myself or my family, so I think they’ll be okay with my efforts. Thanks for sharing your work. 👍❤️😊

5:00 Don't forget to lower the pressor foot. My goodness. I've been trying to free motion quilt on my Patchwork since I got it over 15 years ago. Never got it to work and I finally gave up. Now I have a need to do some quilting and have forced myself to learn this. I'm glad I found you and you have saved me from buying a machine just for quilting. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

I also appreciate you sharing this information. I have a singer patchwork and I do enjoy it. I’ve not made a whole quilt but I have made some blocks so I have several blocks that are a hot mess that I can practice with. The reason why I wanted to know how to quilt on this machine is I plan on making some bags with patterns from by Annie and I would like to quilt my own panels. Can you explain to me what the pink tape is for on the machine? Is it under your plate or on top of it? Also, do you change your tension to quilt or is it ok to keep the machine in the auto position? Thank you for your tutorials on this machine! They are quite helpful!

The tape is Glo Line tape. I line it up just in front of the needle plate, so it isn't on top of it or underneath the needle plate. I use it to help me sew a straight line when I am sewing a patch on the diagonal such as a half-square triangle or a flying geese unit.

I have had this machune for a couple of years, love the free motion. I recently bought a set of templates but when using the low shank ruler foot, there is no space between machine and foot. I cant move the fabric with the templates. What should I do? Is it not possible to use templates?

I don't know. I never tried templates with this machine. Could you contact the manufacturer of the templates and ask them about it?

I just purchased this machine and can't wait to free-motion quilt with it. I noticed you didn't lower feed dogs...is that not an option?...you only use the dark plastic plate?

That's right. You can't lower the feed dogs on this machine. The plate cover that comes with the machine fits securely though.

Are you having problems with the tension? If so, you can adjust the needle tension to help balance the stitch.

Singer has a You Tube channel - Singer Sewing Company. They have a playlist with 10 videos on the Singer Patchwork 7285Q that goes over basics of the machine. That may help.

Go to sewingpartsonline.com. Type in your machine brand and model number along with the phrase "darning plate" in the search box. It will pop up with the part you need.

That screw will not stay tightened!! This is not a Good Quality machine but you are doing a terrific job demonstrating. I regret ever buying this machine.

Is the pink line a stick on guide for the center? I noticed you didn't touch the top tension dial& left it set to auto?

Yes, it is a piece of Glo line tape that I use as a guide. I don't need to adjust the tension very often. Keeping it at auto is usually fine.

Well, it’s 4 months later and I still can’t master Free Motion so I purchased a new machine with larger harp area. There is not enough space on most domestic size to get hold of your fabric to quilt. I suggest not to buy this machine for more than just patchwork stitching !

Does anyone know if Singer has a presser foot that I can use with ruler work on this machine? The 2 different feet I purchased sit too low and doesn't allow the fabric to move freely under the needle.

How did you take off the shorter arm, to attach your bigger one ? I can't get it off. All my bobbins and ectare inside there. I can get to them.

The table fits pretty snugly. You just have to give it a good tug. It may help to fold up the leg before you pull the table off.

You may be able to get it at a place that sells parts for Singers. Mine came with the machine. You could also do a google search to see who sells them.

My thread keeps breaking. Am I going too fast?

It's possible. There are other things that can cause the thread to break, but slowing down is usually a good place to start to figure out why the thread is breaking. If that doesn't make a difference, try using a fresh needle, and make sure your thread is threaded through the machine correctly.

I have never tried it, but you should be able to quilt on any sewing machine.

You can checked to make sure the bobbin is inserted the right way & the thread is coming off the bobbin correctly. Also, if the needle plate is tightened down to much it may cause problems. Also try re-threading the machine. The thread may not be seated between the tension discs securely.

Sure you can Free Motion on a small sample piece but doing this in a baby size quilt is almost impossible due to the narrow opening at the neck of about 6”. Don’t suggest this machine to purchase for Quilting or heavy fabrics. Also the tension always slips stitches for no reason.😖
