In this video, I demonstrate how to paint a realistic still life using oil paint from start to finish. I provide narration about my process along the way and go over all the basics of how to lay in an initial sketch, block out light and shadow, colors. I also go into detail on more advanced techniques of refining details, working with reflected light, and creating harmony in the painting with color. Along the way you'll be able to see my palate and all the colors I mix. For the most part, the painting is in real time, though I do speed things up that don't offer much value. Let me know what you think.

Very nice. Yes, there are a few of us who prefer longer videos. Especially narrated/instruction videos. I'm transitioning from years of watercolor painting to oil painting and this has been helpful. Someday I hope to be as confident and aware as someone like you in painting with oils. Thank you...

Thank you for giving such great detail on working this painting, you make it so easy to fallow along. I'm a beginner at painting. Many years ago I was watching William Alexander and I tried and was doing ok fallowing along with him, until my EX was making fun of my painting that I gave up. I took it up again after I had Covid 19 3 years ago, my daughter inspired me with her painting she never had a lesson either and she is doing great. Any how, thank you I love the way you paint I watched it several times and have started to fallow along, I see my mistake, I placed my bowl even with the top line of where the table top or piece of wood begin, I will have to paint over that dark part to bring the bowl down a bit. I have the apples and the background painted in, apples are undercoated, that is as far as I got. I'm anxious to finish it I'm taking my time with it. Thank you and I'm happy I have found you on line.

Thank you for the full length tutorial. It is great, please do more. Your explanations ( e.g. color mixing, light value and shading, texture etc.) make the tutorial a much more valuable learning experience than simply watching the many other videos that just show a high speed painting.

I didn't skip ahead, I promise. I was far too mesmerized and entertained to do that. In fact I didn't want it to end. The real time aspect, especially with the commentary, made this tutorial a genuine treasure. So much better than any time lapse video could ever be. PLEASE do more of these!

Hi. I commented before, but am now answering you final questions. I think your narrated and real time format is great. Please continue it! I want to copy (!) your detailed brushwork and your slow and patient painting style. Your commentary on shadows is so valuable. I would like to know more about the brushes you use. But I assume that the ones you use for detail at the end are small sable brushes, right? Also, when you first laid out your paints on your palette, it looked like you had old colors there.... Do you keep certain colors on your palette always? Thanks for all these great videos! 😊
@alekseyvaynshteyn
@alekseyvaynshteyn 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Linda, I'm glad you found it helpful. I use hog bristle brushes for the most part and then go in with a sable brush for the details. Regarding my palate, if I have colors that have not dried out, I keep them and use them again. Otherwise I scrape the dried out ones and put on new ones. It's more of an economy play than a technique.
