Free Our Temples - J Sai Deepak -

In this talk, the speaker tells us about the age-old tradition of temple administration by local Hindu communities. In doing so, he shatters the myth that the temple is a Brahmanical institution. The speaker informs us that the temple is not just a religious centre, but also a social and economic organization that takes care of the livelihood of local communities. Therefore, the temple is central to the functioning of Hindu society and it is due to its multi-faceted nature that the temple has been the target of Islamic invaders and Christian missionaries. The speaker then explains the concept of temple legislation and how it has been misused to justify government takeover and subsequent abuse of thousands of temples in the state of Tamil Nadu. Surprisingly, only the temples of the Hindu community are controlled by the ‘secular’ government of India.
The speaker reveals how state officials, who are charged with the task of ‘protecting’ temples, work in concert with police officials and thieves and idol smugglers. On the whole, the speaker builds the case that there is an urgent need for a massive overhaul of the structure of temple administration by the government.

Consider the year 2002. Karnataka State Govt received around Rs 72 crore from 251,000 temples. But only Rs 10 crore was returned to the temples while rest of the funds were used for other purposes including funding of Rs 50 crore for madrassas & Haj subsidy and Rs 10 crore for Churches.

Forget Mahabalipuram. Atleast it has the excuse of not being a 'temple'. Check out so many other temples in the south. Most have lost whatever sanctity they had. The compound of huge temples are strewn with spit and garbage. If we can't keep our most sacred precincts clean, what can be expected from such places which are not even considered sacred.

Money will be collected at short notice for a particular cause with every single pai accounted for & only enough money to disburse immediately. Our money should not accumulate anywhere, not even in banks & no Paytm, NGO business. Archakar's salary will be given according to his needs & money can be put *liberally* in the aarti plate without the knowledge of the office bearers or must be able to prevent them from snatching it from the archakar. If they do anything funny (And I'm sure they'll try all tricks under their sleeves once their loot dries up), archakar should be paid by the bhakths in a place far away from the temple, rather from the eyes of the officers. Annadaanams, school fees of poor students, hospital charges, uniform & books distribution, donation for construction of houses & taking care of poor senior citizens should also be organised with the money that we save from not putting in the temple. And a big *No* to the stupid abhishEkams when millions of children are going hungry & dying in this country. Utilise it for the aforesaid purposes. Spread the word around as fast as you can.

State doesnt have nay right to "regulate" any temple. The fact is simple. Temple is a private property. And the owners of the private property should be allowed to make their own rules. Only thing is that those rules should be constitutional thats it. Everything else the trustees of the temples can take care of it. and those rich temples in north india which are not under state control, particularly the gujarat, Rajasthan and UP., they should lead the example by temples doing community service.

Great talk enriching our knowledge. Since there was a reference to Udupi temple, I remember an incident where meals served to devotees. A non Brahmin sat for meal at a place reserved Brahmins unknowingly and she was made to get up from there. Insulted, she filed case against caste discrimination and matter went to Karnataka High court. Surprisingly, court verdict was in favour of temple administration citing tradition. I don't know much details except the newspaper reports. Kindly comment on this.
