Traditional grip, taps, and buzz strokes. This first lesson is designed for people just starting out with Scottish drumming. We review the traditional grip, and go over two of the most basic strokes -- the tap and the buzz.

We have a son who is keen to join our local pipe band playing snare along with his brothers who play pipes. We are in rural Australia, and the local band is only hanging onto it's existence by a thread. So glad we can get instruction on you tube, otherwise, it just would not be possible for our guy to learn. Please keep posting lessons and inspiration!!

My daughter is starting off with Highland Drumming, so this video is great to help her out! My question is this: she is left handed, so is it safe to assume that she will need to switch her hands from what is being displayed in the video (meaning her left hand would have the under grip and the right would have the top hand grip)?

See what comes naturally... i would encourage her to use the same grip as the gentleman in the video first..

The buzz stroke you seem to be something a little different than the tap with your left hand. Like, you are letting go of the stick. - HOWEVER We can not see it clearly as your left hand is halfway off the screen!

What exactly is "scottish" drumming lol

Technically, it's actually called "Pipe Band Drumming." It's the style of drumming used in Scottish Bagpipe Bands.
