I like the Jesus Storybook Bible. It takes some heavy topics and gives them bones that are understandable instead of watering them down. I read the P&P linked below; it seems it isn't for everyone. I don't think teaching kids that they are loved by God and that we are all God's children (He is the creator after all) is a bad thing.
