This video gives you an update for my free-range survival flock and breeding projects, including updates for my Terrorfowl and Florida Cracker Gamefowl.
Welcome to Florida Bullfrog's Hunting Old Florida! This channel is about homesteading, farming, hunting, fishing, camping and life in rural Florida. I am an 8th generation Floridian. My family has been in Florida since the early 1800s. I am a member of a nearly extinct ethnicity called the Florida Crackers. We were the first American settlers of Florida after the Spanish and the Seminole. Our culture is defined by a strong tie to the woods and wild places of Florida. Unfortunately, development and a massive population growth has destroyed most of Old Florida, and what little bit is left is slipping away fast. The Cracker cannot and will not survive once Florida's wild places become relegated to a few parks and public areas. Please join me as I chronicle what little bit of Old Florida Cracker culture is left before it fades away into extinction.

I loved the book it’s chock full of info and wonderful storytelling! Definitely going to be reading it multiple times to absorb all the gems in it! I imagine if there were an audiobook version it would be awesome for the whole family (we homeschool) to listen and learn too on long roadtrips 😊 Thank you for writing this book! I don’t have chickens yet but being armed with the knowledge this book imparts is a great start 😊

Bought your book and read through it in one day. I couldn’t stop reading it. I’m from Illinois and long story short got into chicken breeding a year ago by accident. Your book cleared up so many questions that I had. I can attest my Blue Andalusian crossed with Wyandottes and woke up some genes that were dormant. And these were just some Tractor Supply birds they were getting rid of.

Ducks are also good option. Khaki Campbell and Indian runner ducks good egg layers and more fatty meat.

Any idea how you got the mutation to lay blue eggs? I’m a sucker for aesthetics and the traditional Easter eggers seem a bit easily eaten.

Hello, it's my first time here. I saw yup on Davis the Good. Do you ever worry about alligators?
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 7 күн бұрын
Alligators frequent my farm. I have 2 large ponds and then a swamp and a gator will show up every 6 months or so. I’ve never known one to be a threat to the chickens primarily because the chickens don’t water where the gators frequent. The gators are a big danger to my dogs, however.

A huge thank you to David the Good for putting a spotlight on your channel! Subscribed, if for no other reason than it's nice to hear genuine Florida Southerner accents still. I'm in the Jacksonville area, and your about section regarding our overdevelopment hits hard here. We still have a few places with trees, but developers want to cut those down too! And for what? To build car washes! They could build that on so many of the desolate concrete lots that litter this city! If only there was a way for those without lots of money could stop them...

Growing up my chickens never got sick. That was true of both my layers and my game chickens. I believe even since that time they've become weaker via the sort of kill and quarantine approaches that governments force on poultry operations as opposed to allowing sicknesses to cull the weak and breeding off the strong.

Where can i buy terror fowl ? Do hatchers sell them ?
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 9 күн бұрын
They’re my own creation. But their base genome is oriental gamefowl, which is a large family of primitive chickens composed of various breeds. “Saipan jungle fowl,” “Malay,” “Thai/Taiwanese game,” are all examples of large oriental gamefowl of the types I am using to create the terrorfowl. The main thing I’m modifying on them is making their wings larger and their feathers fuller. In the process, I’ve also reactivated their carnivorous genes that the oriental gamefowl historically possessed.

I have a small flock including Welsummers in the foothills of central California. Bobcat and coyote country. Are the standard Old English Game roosters a suitable breed to start your survival chickens program (just got your book and loving it).
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 9 күн бұрын
Yes. There are 2 overall kinds of Old English: the Oxford strain and the Carlisle strain. You want a bird that approximates the Oxford strain, meaning it will look like at American gamefowl. Most hatcheries sell American games under the label “Old English Gamefowl.”
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 9 күн бұрын
True Oxford Old English games are almost non existent in the US. Any quality American gamefowl will accomplish the same. American gamefowl are simply Oxford type Old English that lived in the colonies during the Revolution and began being considered their own breed. Officially the American game is not recognized by any major poultry club. They’re considered Old English game.

This is the first time I've seen your channel and I'm intrigued! I would love to be able to have a portion of my flock free ranging 100% of the time for the health of my woods. The problem is I've got every predator except grizzlies and wolves. I do have a friend down the road who has been free ranging her chickens (they go in at night still though). She's had decent success. I'll likely start with putting some excess roosters out in the goat shed. I do already breed for hardiness and much prefer a barnyard mix over survival breeds.
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 9 күн бұрын
I’ve got every predator Florida offers except pythons and panthers. Black bears, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, a plethora of birds of prey, and many other lurk my woods. The chickens are better at surviving than the predators are at catching them. Its about your chicken selection and using traditional methods of deterring predators that farmers all over the world have used for millennia.

@@Florida_Bullfrog thanks. My snakes aren't as big as yours at least! I've had the bears break into my animal buildings to get them too. People keep saying to get guardian dogs but that's not practical for everybody. We've got our German shepherd in the house that is awesome at alerting us and has chased off many bears. I know there's at least one cougar in the area because my neighbor has caught it on his trail cam headed towards my place but I've fortunately never seen any signs of cougars near my animals though I'm certain they're watching.

Is your chickens’ territory fenced in such a way to keep a normal dog confined? It doesn’t take a livestock guardian breed. Most random farm mutts do the job well. What it does take is that outside presence at night. The dog needs to be out there and ready to make its presence known when it smells predators. Could you keep your German Shepard inside as a companion and have another dog outside at night that patrols around your coop? There’s no better predator deterrent than that. Dogs are man’s best friend for a reason. It wasn’t for their companionship that humans have kept dogs for most of history. Its been for their practical use. Dogs are domestic grey wolves. Wolves are top predators in most temperate and some tropical ecosystems. Everything fears them by instinct. Add to that several thousand years of humans using dogs to harass and hunt other animals and you end up with a near-perfect deterrent.
@mleonard3163
@mleonard3163 9 күн бұрын
@@Florida_Bullfrog that would take perimeter fencing and the only fencing we currently have is around the goat pen and chicken run. The goal is a fence around the property just enough to stop my goats from wandering too far while I'm out with them browsing. That way I can actually get work done while they're foraging. If I'm not paying attention they'll go down the cliff to the road and the blackberries on the other side of the road regardless of the fact that they've got plenty of blackberries here. Once we have a lightweight fence up I want to plant a woven hedge from plants that average 10-20 feet tall. That will keep my animals in and the larger predators will have to go around for the most part... And then I would happily have a couple of mostly outdoor dogs. Our German is still an awesome watchdog but he's going to be 9 next week and he recently started slowing down.
@Florida_Bullfrog

@@mleonard3163Do you have any trees? I find tree-roosting to be safer than coop roosting. Your chickens will need the ability to fly high up the tree. In the short term before you can get a peremeter fence up, some flightier chickens will be your main option.
