We are so happy that your family survived the hurricane. Our son works up near Table Rock at a camp. He said that there are so many downed trees that they can’t get off. He is working at clearing the logging roads to get a path clear. I just can’t imagine being stuck somewhere. They have food and are using the creek for their water source. Prayers go out to all of you.

I'm from the Gulf Coast and have been through many hurricanes in my almost 63 years. The best trick for preserving freezer food is, 2-4 days before the storm, rearrange the freezer and add gallon full jugs of water. If you don't have milk jugs, empty soda bottles will work, but the bigger the better. In addition, put a cup of ice in each freezer. The frozen jugs of water will extend your freezer time and the cup of ice, if melted, will tell you when it's been too long. Praying for you and all those in the path of Helene - and now hurricane Milton.

I'm 71 yrs old and have never, in my lifetime, seen a hurricane in Florida move so far north and continue to be so destructive. That storm did catastrophic damage in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. Where I live in northeast Tennessee, we had some wind, but the rain was the worst for us. Luckily I live on a hill so I didn't have flooding near my house. Hope your power comes back on soon!

Run your electricity into a manual service disconnect switch box before it goes to your breaker panel. That way you can directly hook a generator up to your home easily. When you loose power you pull the switch and disconnect from the power grid and into your waiting generator. Get a big enough generator to run your house, freezers and well. I run a Honda EM5000 SX and it easily takes care of my electricity needs.

When Rita was heading our way, I bought a generator and a window a/c unit. (Wanted ONE cool room to retreat to!) Rigged the generator to plug into the dryer outlet (main breaker OFF beforehand) and it runs the house and the window unit. Have to turn everything off to run the well, but fill up the tank and then shut the well breaker off and turn the rest of the house back on. Get at least 8 five gallon gas cans and fill them prior. Generators are expensive yard decorations without fuel! Will be investing in the switch in the future for safety's sake - the dryer outlet works but it's sketchy AF TBH. (That window unit just crapped out this year, 19 years later)

If he can get a hold of a dehumidifier that will help dry it out further. Treat the floor and walls in your basement with straight vinegar. Vinegar is great in cleaning mold and helping it not to form. You can also go back and treat again with essential oils, clove, tea tree, lavender, citrus and eucalyptus which will help it smell better than vinegar.

Power out: Hawaii had a hurricane once that dropped so many trees that many subdivisions went anywhere from several days without power to up to 3 months. Once a friend's area not far from me suffered 52 inches of rain in less than 5 days. My particular street did exceptionally well having lost power for ONLY 6 days straight. And thanks to the water company having recently installed emergency generators, we had water that whole time. We live together as one human race on this Earth, something that Mother Nature isn't shy about reminding us of. Blessings to you and yours. With Aloha... (2:) The power poles along the street you drove by was a common site in Hawaii too. My heart goes out to you. Thanks to your neighbor helping you out too. With more Aloha...

@@jeanninewakefield4630 Oh my! Sorry to hear that but it’s a relief to learn they’re ok. Thank you for sharing. They must have some wifi/data connection to be able to post their update on A+ which is reassuring in the event of an LoD emergency. I imagine the boys are utilising their honed skid steer and tractor skills helping to clear downed trees and neighbours. Was concerned about the pond dam. It could have been a catastrophic disaster if it hadn’t held.

Happy to know you did not have any major loss. With all that meat just processed, you are so fortunate to have not lost it. Perhaps some thought for a propane generator to do the fridge, freezer, stove and well. It would be a wise investment. Thanks to your friend Mike coming over and helping clean up the trees from fence line and gate. Those were huge. Y'all take care and have a Blessed day.

In the past 35 Years in north central VA. We have lived through several outages. The worst took 11 days to rebuild the whole power grid. I think there were over 100 poles that had to be replaced. Thank you to the power companies that send crews out to help.
