I love these "full story" videos, condensing your philosophy and approach on a particular enterprise in one video. Last week's one on no dig market gardening was really great as well. I own a copy of 'Making small farms work', but it's nice to see everything come together in a single video.

Which reminds me the next part of the mini course is out today isn't it :D As an old phart of 53, I'm looking to extract information from the books and see if I can work out if there's a way I can do this sort of thing on maybe a different scale - enough to earn me a living without finishing me off. Really looking forward to reading the books from the kickstarters when they arrive, and I'm loving the reading the farm like a hero pdf, thank you so much for releasing that :)

I'm just getting started but I've subscribed and will look at other videos you've done about getting started, with chickens - and I'm in BC Canada - but nowhere near as far north as you! Wow!

Thanks a lot for all the information you share through your KZbin channel. Your book is a masterpiece and I am loving it. It is a pity that Spanish regulations don't allow us to use this chicken mobiles (they have to be all in metal) or combine different animal enterprises in the same land. Spain has laws for the industrial production, not for small regenerative farms and it's difficult to set up a small production business. Hope laws will change and we can also change the way we produce food. Keen on, you are a great inspiration. Cheers

Great knowledge and info. Have you considered cutting/laying the tomatoes down in the hoop house prior to bringing in the birds as the base layer for the deep layer system? Seems like it would just add to the compost and seems like it would save some time.

Wow, I appreciate the free nesting box plans. I think it is really a neat design and would love to build one box for around 5 hens so there is a lot of refiguring from the large one you have. Reducing it proportionally seems like that is possible but being here in the U. S. there seems to be a big problem converting the dimensions to our standard as far as the lumber sizes. For instance: We buy 1X2 timber which is actually 3/4"X1 1/2". It's called boards instead of timber. Have you ever had a comment like this before? Like I said, I appreciate the plans but it may not work here in the U. S. as the measurements could be off. I know you are very busy but hopefully you will respond.

What are your thoughts about "fish flavor" coming through in the eggs? Do you think it's a myth, does it depend on the type of fish meal used, do you find that customers don't care? Very curious to know your thoughts on all that.

Since you showed it in the video: what does the "relative minimum land use" chart mean. Like is it the minimum to make enough to be in itself profitable enough to support a person? Or is it the total minimum that would be needed to even consider it as one of many enterprises?

I have a smallholding here in the Midlands of Ireland and I'm inch by inch making it into something that will pay its way I was so excited to find a video of plans of your chicken mobile with rollaway nest boxes but it looks like I'm too late to get those plans for free I'm happy to pay something for them. Something i don't understand, chickens haven't evolved to eat soy, but have they evolved to eat fish (protein). Isn't this strange? Can someone explain please?
@commentarytalk1446
@commentarytalk1446 3 жыл бұрын
In principle it's simple: Their digestive system deals with insect protein and probably from that other animal protein to break down into necessary amino acids. Soy is plant protein thus they did not evolve the complex biochemistry pathways for that particular source of amino acids. I mean some humans are lactase intolerant or else they cannot breakdown alcohol ("alcoholase" oops it's alcohol dehydrogenase and a second enzyme too) Many birds whether or not insectivores or granivores (seed eating) tend to NEED to feed their chicks insects as a source of protein to grow their bodies. Presumably if they can deal with fish protein (I actually do not know this) it's not so different from insect protein (animals). Indeed humans are harvesting a range of insects and molluscs also (snails). In terms of efficiency of protein production it might even be more efficient to harvest too.

I have tried them out on my operation and they’re not satisfactory... They don’t put enough power through the 2x50m nets to really make a difference. I called VossFarming and they do not recommend it for poultry nets. We went back to our main energiser plug in the 240V system. I don’t know why Richard keeps promoting them... Do some more research before you invest this much money, that’s what we should’ve done!
