I made a break of 36 last night but I am not consistent, If I could make that consistently I would be over the moon with that. I think the more you play the more you will get used to the size of the table and angles. But these videos are extremely helpful and thanks for making them!

Great guide! By the way, one point that comes up when you recreate shots is the speed of the cloth. Is there some standardized rating of cloth speed? In golf, they use a gizmo called a stimpmeter. Basically the idea is a ball should roll a fixed distance when released. ? Any devices like that in snooker?

I'm relatively new to the sport. One of things i've noticed, is the amount o where your cue f players that don't cue the ball, with the correct line of sight. By that i mean cueing in a way that your cue is under your chin. It seems that as you get older, your flexibility deteriorates, hence the reason to compensate. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thankyou.

Regarding the imaginary line going back from the shot along the floor, how about just first approaching the shot with the cue already loosely rested on the table in approximately the right line and, from that, setting the feet positions and finally going down on the shot?

My game has been slowly getting better for 2 years now and my opinion so far is a) coaches put way too much emphasis on stance b) by far the most important factor is the exact focus point of your eyes and your head position c) coaches put way too much emphasis on side-to-side head position. But imho head turn and tilt are both more important variables, as well as where your eyes are focusing. E.g. you can have your head position exactly right, but you can still focus your eyes on the wrong spot and accidently use peripheral vision without realizing it. The mind can play tricks on you. A person can 100% believe that they are looking straight down the cue when in fact they are looking down at a slight angle and using peripheral vision to compensate. Head turn is a very important factor, i.e. whether your two eyes are exactly perpendicular to the cue or on a slight angle. If your eyes are not square on then your eyes will naturally try to focus down the line you are facing and then try to use peripheral vision to sight down the cue which will result in an incorrect vision center. Many players do not turn their head enough to get square on, perhaps because it feels uncomfortable. d) cueing action, i.e. where the cue rests against your chest as well as your wrist, elbow and shoulder alignment are important, but nowhere near as important as head position and focus point. The eyes are everything!! e) aiming doesn't require anywhere near as much practice as people think it does. If head position, eye focus and cueing action are all correct then aiming becomes _extremely_ intuitive. Basically the object ball goes where you think it's going to go. A person can get exponentially better at angles solely by improving straight shot accuracy. f) coaches put too much emphasis on aiming in the standing position before getting down. This is misleading for new players. The reality is, almost everyone makes tiny adjustments to their aim in the down position and you can get quite accurate solely aiming in the down position. Trying to aim 100% accurately from the standing position is extremely difficult. Sure it might help to limit the amount of adjustment you need to make after getting down. In this regard it's about as useful as a correct stance. It indirectly improves other facets of your technique but is not the main obstacle a new player has to overcome. g) Child prodigies do not necessarily make good coaches, because often they stumbled upon the most important solutions subconsciously and don't even realize that they are the biggest ways to go wrong. Then they will fixate on lesser problems, because those are the main ones they stumbled into later on when they were developing consciously as an older student. Also because they learnt when their brains were malleable, their visual cortex has probably even changed to compensate for their vision and focus flaws. An adult is not going to have success taking this approach. Needless to say, I don't agree with Break From Life's view that most players get eye focus and head position almost perfect naturally. I think he is projecting from his own experience as a player who started learning in childhood. h) At the end of the day, the best coach you can have is yourself. It helps to use a statistical approach. This means paying attention to whether you miss a shot to the left of the pocket or to the right. Then slowly creating a list of all the variables in your technique that can cause you to miss to the left and a separate list of all the variables that can cause you to miss to the right. Over time you will discover more and more variables, and eliminate more and more flaws. This will probably involve having to reinvent your technique many times and even getting worse in order to get better. Coaches can give you ideas to add to your self-discovery toolkit, but they can't necessarily fix your technique for you, because as an adult you need to adjust your technique to suit your brain, rather than the other way around.

I wish we had KZbin/videos like this back in the 80's when I played at my local club. I didn't have a clue about hitting the white in different places for positioning etc. I remember playing in an under 12's competition, being behind and the ref telling me I required a snooker. thanks, I think your video's are fantastic. When you do your video's are you able to somehow use a similar lens so the table looks in proportion to that on tv. When you do your recreation shots it would look even better if the 2 tables (yours and the actual players shot) looked the same. Even in this video it would improve alot. My new camera has a flatter image. I can flatten it out completely but then it looks a bit stretched in places. The main problem is I don’t have enough space. The camera angle on tv is very high and I only have 10ft before I hit the ceiling. I could just try to find a way to mount something from the ceiling might be a bit better
