For those that aren't familiar with Devil's Lake, quartzite is practically glass! Minimal friction, maximum sweat. The gear would skate if you fell on it anyway. Balanced Rock is such a sick spot. The grades may seem light, but for lack of a better word, the whole place is sandbagged compared to more modern area's grades.

That rock is slick, my son and I saw some climbers there climbing and we found a little spot and were trying it out just for fun. We both were like man I don't know how people get up this stuff. I didn't know that quartzite is known for being somewhat of a slick rock type. Devils lake is so cool, I live 25 minutes away and have been there once on a field trip as a kid before April of this year and we have been there a bunch this year. I might have to get my son into climbing since there is allot of good spots to try and climb at Devils Lake.

I too live in Wisconsin near spring green, I took my son to Devils Lake and we saw quite a few people climbing there and he was just enamered with the guys that were climbing. If its not too expensive to get some beginner gear I just might have to get some for us as a father son thing IDK.

Is that Watermarks?

This is a route called "Red Pulpit" which is to the left of Watermarks on the same wall.

@climbingvideos OK, thanks. I was pretty sure it was. But it's been probably 25 years since I've been up there, much less climbing. When my husband died suddenly in 2005, any thought of climbing again was dashed. Watermarks was one of our favorites though. We didn't have anything besides simple cameras back then, so it's really nice to reminisce and see some climbing on video. All the rest is just what's in my memory.

@@CuzKatieSaysSo Thank you for sharing! I'm glad I could provide that little window through time. I've got a lot of fond memories of Devil's Lake too - such a special place. Take care and thanks for watching!

It's possible you're referring to Mike Shaffer. Here's the footage of his hair-raising free solo of Bagatelle: vimeo.com/162194894

I think some guy named Mike McCarron used to solo a lot of climbs at Devil's Lake up to 5.12 and that was in the eighties and nineties, I wonder what ever happened to him

www.mountainproject.com/route/105730622/bagatelle He’s mentioned here in the Bagatelle description. It says he did it in ‘83 maybe? Not sure where he’s at these days, but I’d love to hear the stories!
