I made my own presets. This synth doesn't keep/load the preset you choose for a project, i.e. in Ableton Live Lite, or Waveform free 12. When you close the project and reload it the preset is gone. I don't totally dislike it but is very frustrating right now.

I hadn't noticed that, but have just checked it... and you're right. I can create presets and they are saved by Vintage... but when I reload the project, I just get the last Factory preset instead of any saved user preset. That is really poor, and I've not seen that behaviour in a VST for a LONG time.

EG attack is at least 5.00ms and cannot be set to 0.00, so I cannot get a sharp attack.🙁 I also felt that the sound was very thin when the Drive of VCF was turned on 🤥

😸 Interesting! I came for Behringer, and ended up with Surge, which i had heard of, but never tried before… I'm installing it right now… 👍

Because it's free, I'm not really going to get too wrapped around the axle. I agree that Behringer have made a lot of mistakes. But I appreciate your review. It saved me time. 90's field sounds, love it. Vital is a great free synth.

This is an odd release to me. Seems like a very expensive way to get people signed up to their new ecosystem. The problem with releasing a rather buggy, unimpressive synth - even a free one - is that it drags down the reputation of the company, which is already on shaky ground when it comes to quality. I think some DAWs come bundled with more useful synths. On the plus side, determined patch programmers can probably get some good sounds.

It’s not often I don’t at least try a free plugin, but this seems pointless. I’ll pass thanks. As for Behringer’s approach, I do own their Odyssey clone and it’s great but I wouldn’t buy their DFAM clone as Moog still produce it and I think it’s wrong to copy products still in production. Behringer’s attitude is actually putting me off buying anything else from them. I think we all need to consider carefully which companies we support with our cash.

I messed around with it for about 2 hours and I have about 45 years of synth programming under my belt. So my 2 cents:. Overall, it impresses me as a toy and sounds like something Windows XP would have included as a free "creative app" back in 2001. I checked all the presets as well, and found nothing usable or impressive or as a template to expand on. I also noticed there was no way to set the synth in mono-legato mode which is weird since it is a "vintage synth".😼 So, not so good for leads or basses. Likewise, none of the presets seem to be affected by the Mod wheel, and the pitch wheel range is set at a whole tone either way. Well...free is free ,but this one needs some work to be worth keeping. To be honest, with Surge, Odin2, Vital just to name 3 out there as free synths, the Behringer V isn´t up to the bar.

This feels like a weird proof-of-concept / public experiment that gets a lot of things in the overall package right. Is it really a public beta for everything but the very heart of the actual synth? e.g. gui and remote control handling, website, download, licensing infrastructure? Once the bugs are sorted out around the periphery, with the help of unwitting users who aren’t watching this channel, then maybe publish a good synth engine? Reminds me a bit of the first Japanese cars to hit North America in the 70s. Pretty shitty at first, but they helped to build a dealer network and repair infrastructure. Some years later they had surpassed the domestic car makers in quality and sales.

I think that's a good theory - particulary given the "Synth Suite" clue. But still no reason to send out such a poor filter!

i regsistered the standalone version, but when i bring vintage into garageband, it says it is not registered and no audio. Any suggestions? I restarted the mac and still same results.

The most interesting thing about this VA VST is that it requires you to authenticate in the standalone version. 🤷♂️

I wasn't aware of that... I've only happened to activate it in Standalone mode, so that's interesting...

Watch the behringer video, the guy there gets great sounds out of it in his intro demo. Just try it, tweak it and see for yourself.

I've watched that... I think the presets show that there's not a lot here to be excited about when there are better free alternatives available that will work well straight out of the box.

That's what I was thinking. This guy is just brushing the surface. I think this is just a giant beta test that they are doing by giving any and everyone a free copy.

I guess if you are a preset surfer then it's not for you. I'd spend some time creating my own patches before making my mind up. Most factory banks are created by known sound designers who get paid for their work. If the synth is being given away free, I suspect that Behringer skipped that to help with cutting the costs on something that they won't make any money from. Cheers ✌️

Regarding copying vintage synths: I actually think it's okay to copy the sound and functionality of a vintage synth. I don't think it's okay to copy the branding, though. For example, the DeepMind synths are heavily-inspired by the Roland Juno synths, but the DeepMind doesn't try to look like a Juno 106 - great. But the Pro-800 copies the visual style of the Prophet 600, and to me, that is a problem, regardless if the Prophet 600 is currently in production or not.
