Unsolicited Smart watches: If they are being mailed to military personnel then they are using the devices to track the soldiers overseas to figure out deployments, locations, etc. That's a great way to figure out where classified and top secret missions are going.
@CNSninja
@CNSninja Жыл бұрын
It blows my mind that anybody, even a civilian, would just accept a free and unsolicited object with tracking abilities from a stranger. Given that these are soldiers who should reasonably expect that espionage could be an imminent problem at some point, just makes it a thousand times more unbelievable. If I was a soldier and some mystery party sent me a SMART WATCH, I would immediately take it to my superior officers and let them know that something sketchy is happening to me. That's so obvious.

@DanniDuck
@DanniDuck Жыл бұрын
"Somehow?" - Maybe a free one. Paid ones are very profitable, at least with how slow most of the populations internet still is. A single $5 or less 1g server with 1 core can easily handle quite a few clients, and for a VPN company buying in bulk with 12+ month commitments, it's probably significantly cheaper than it would be for a single client. The fact that Proton has a free version entirely paid for by paid users with 30+ 10G servers in 3 countries with amazing speeds (I use it 24/7) is proof of their profitability.
@mrbanana6464
@mrbanana6464 Жыл бұрын
@@DanniDuck I think you're forgetting that bandwidth is surprisingly expensive. At vultr's 1 cent per GB you're looking at $10 a month for 1TB. The average household consumes around 500GB of bandwidth a month so that's $5 a month in expenses minimum per user. And that's an extremely generous estimate given how much bandwidth costs for most cloud providers, with aws charging around 9 cents per GB and gcp 8 cents per GB. Profit margins for VPNs are actually extremely low.

Proton vpn is probably the only paid vpn that offers a very limited free version which is paid for by the ones that use the paid version. The free capability is there for those who are journalists or in countries with restricted access to the internet (which also means restrictions to being able to pay for a vpn). They often highlight this in all of proton it's services, especially their mailcient, that paying or donating also helps people who don't have the privileges many of us internet users do when it comes to paying for a service.

@@kavky The problem with any porn is that the image or video is not age verified. Can you tell the difference between an 18 year old girl and one 17. The latter image could get you 5 years in prison and worse. Plus what you think your clicking on may not be what you think it is. Many innocent people can easily be screwed but most people don't care if innocent people are sent to prison. I have sensed over the years very deceptive ways they lure people in. These laws are dangerous not to mention the extreme draconian punishment aspect of these laws. Underage children has been used by all the intelligence agencies to blackmail people. Congress has sanctioned the use of children in these operations. If you have to decide between murdering someone or risk looking at porn, the former has way less risk. The politicians who made these laws should be sent to prison. Politicians always claim they are making such laws to protect children yet look the other way when the state covertly uses them. The largest and only distributor of such porn in US is the government. It is sanctioned by US Congress. Most people who express outrage of such porn are two faced and stay very quiet when it involves their government. Human trafficking is primarily supported by the governments all around the world behind the scenes. It's why it can't be stopped.

The EncrCchat "hack" has been very disputed. It is believed in Sec circles that the police intercepted a large quantity of phones going to different people and putting in snoopers etc, and downloading keys etc etc. And yes, it was a dumb idea to begin with, why not roll your own privacy phone? There are so many apps for that, that any product like this is just not viable to begin with. There has also been speculation that the whole thing was an operation by different European Police agencies.

I'm not sure if hosting your privacy app on a retail Google/Apple phone can ever really be secure? The private keys must be stored locally on the phone somewhere, which the phone obviously has access to if the privacy app is specifically targeted by Google/Apple? Building your own phone is one option, but very expensive, and you STILL have to trust 3rd parties to some extent (either software or hardware). And I also have doubts that a security-focused org would keep un-encrypted messages for all these people in their DB with a since decryption key or some other lame method?

I don’t see why Signal would be more secure. There are plenty of opportunities for the app to be modified between the source code and downloading it from the App Store. Plus, there is no way to verify that it is actually end to end encrypted without seeing the source code that is being used to build the production app for the app stores. At the end of the day you have to trust a developer who is shipping it to the App Store, which is obviously somebody who can be compromised.

One question, if i am connected to the vpn i am connected to the vpn servers, so if a request is made from my client app will that not be from the servers instead if from my ip. Also taking in consideration that most free VPNs have only a few servers which will make it easy to be caught right? Hmm strange i guess 😢

Free VPNs are like a "Free Security Guard" service. All you have to do, is give this FREE security guard, access to your home, keys to all your locks, and everything will be just fine and dandy when you go out at night and leave your home in the care of this guy who is FREE, who you don't know anything about. Would you do it?

smartwatches... in 2018, researchers identified some CIA black sites based on Strava user activity heat maps. I can easily imagine that sending smart watches to the US military could be a PRC operation to create similar such information without the hassle of having to extract the info from Strava first.

I honestly feel like it's only fair to be part of a botnet if the app works 😅, it's not even like that would be a huge data usage in the network since it's a request every 10 seconds. The only issue for me is that this fact wasn't made clear from the start...

About free VPNs, people from countries with dictatorship regimes like Iran really don't have any other choice. With income of around 150 to 200 dollars a month paying for a VPN is of out the equation. I know a free VPN that wants access to everything but works sometimes on some ISPs.

what bothers me is vpn is used wrongly by 99% of users , its equivalent of going to same stores same time same clothes same car , but now you wear a facemask(and suprise not suprise everyone knows its you) , most apps , goverments and companies mostly track by software fingerprint , i could go on for hours but noone who uses vpn will read this or be convinced by it. , each time i mention it on imgur or other places people just downvote the comments.

Wasn't it Person of Interest that had a character come up with an alternate phone system that the authorities were unaware of, so they weren't trying to hack it? Of course, security through obscurity is foolish, unless you have some means to detect the moment your obscurity is lost...but it's certainly smarter than using something that advertises itself, making it a huge target. It's better to just not have any secrets anyone would value.

There's ONE VPN service I've been using since 2016 or so and thats hide me (mostly on PC). It's premium with a limited free plan. In this case, the income is premium users, as the free plan is limited to WAY fewer locations with a hard data cap, after which you end up on slower (depending on current load/time) free servers with fair use. I just don't use a VPN service enough for it to be worth a subscription but that's just me.
