Don't edit the */etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf* directly - copy the contents... (I should have known better...) Then create */usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf* and copy the contents into that one as the "/etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf" will get overwritten by an update.

Since it's open source and there's interest in it, you could develop it if you how to program or you could pay someone to do it. That's always a possibility. 😊

at 3:00 (first reboot) i got a rainbow-screen, hanging. I testet 13.2, 13.3, 14.0 all releases the same. I'm using a Pi4 4GB and a SSD. If i try a 13.2 STABLE the Pi will boot, but i don't know how to upgrade a 13.2-STABLE to a 14.0-RELEASE. Any Idea?

The missing Wifi driver really is a bummer! But as long you can get it to work, it shouldn't be too big of a problem. How is the boot up time? I heard it should be way faster now in version 14.0. Seems like it's time to be on the look out for a new browser for the Raspberry Pi. Also I really do like the editing! These little sound effects when future Nuggie interjects for a moment are super funny!! Would you kinda revisit your "How to set up a Desktop on Freebsd?" video series you did about a year ago? I assume some details have changed and maybe there is something to add(?). Keep it up! I'm exited for your content!

The boot time on the pi to the login in prompt, is, well, not going to break any speed records :-) 1m:02s I tend to leave the Pi on all the time as it uses so little power... That's an interesting idea....a revisit.... I'm sure some things will have changed, I'll make a note, and I'll have something out after a couple of videos I'm doing....

One major problem is that the drivers are proprietary and only developed for linux. In this case it's not freeBSD's fault, but Broadcom's. Of course the driver support is unfortunately lacking in FreeBSD...

@@remigoldbach9608the main reason why Broadcom and others don’t create drivers for FreeBSD is the lack of user base. If FreeBSD had developed a standard user interface and catered for users who don’t want to manually configure things 20 years ago maybe it would be different. Sadly I think that ship has sailed

I recently took a giant step and installed FreeBSD 14 on my laptop (Panasonic Toughbook CF-54). I had been a happy Debian desktop user for the past two decades. Want to make it my daily user. I followed the instruction on the manual and finally installed the Gnome desktop. I also (pkg installed) several browsers along with some other software. Still can't get the plug-in headset to work, my network printer and USB drives still don't work. I don't want to return to Linux. I know RoboNuggie has a video where he installs USB drives. Hope to find it soon. THANKS!

I think the main reason for RPi most OS's not having hardware acceleration is that the library is closed source, and the Linux kernel uses a (closed) binary blob to enable it. So the only way to get hardware acceleration is to integrate those two items into the boot process, and I dont know how compatible a linux based library is for non-linux based OS's. The binary blob is just a matter of where to include at "kernel" time, but you would essentially have to follow the RPiOS use case, and essentially that means a "hack" to for non-linux kernels - For the original Devuan on RPi, they used an upgraded Jessie Raspbian, which kept the kernel and the RPi specific libraries, and so they got hardware acceleration and all devices by default.

@@RoboNuggie the alternate kernal module (kms?) used by the X Windows DRM modules _is_ (meant to be) open source , although I dont know if anyone has access to that source yet (they started writing it in time for RPi4 release, but I think the current version is still only just over 1 year old) - I believe this will be what other OS's will adapt, when they make those sources available (ie MESA must have had access to it at some point to give us that X DRM module)
@paulwratt

@@RoboNuggie It turns out the RPi "kernel blob" is actually ThreadX RTOS VideoCore (GPU) binary. Microsoft bought the company that made ThreadX RTOS a couple of years ago in response to AMZN taking over FreeRTOS, and they have just made it Open Source and gifted management of it to Eclipse Foundation. Plus i was right, the GPU library/driver is also Open Source, so you should see both parts in the next FreeBSD release. I guess we will see ..

I agree , FreeBSD is an excellent OS. But I was less lucky than you. First, Java 8 is incredibly slow, because there is no mixed mode. Secondary, my TF card died after 3 month. Since, FreeBSD doesn't support 32 bit mode for 14, I will wait when RPi 5 is back in stock. Perhaps in March next year.

hey chris so i recently swapped my lenovo legion 5 laptop from intel ax200 wifi card to a bcm4360 wifi card as the intel one was having issues staying conncted via linux or bsd so i bought the 4360 and i googled to see IF it works in bsd and i find no driver for it. Idk if you can help with that or offer some advice perhaps? i see no relevant info for it sadly on google or etc.
@enjcuta4774

In the Linux world the BCM4360 has a binary blob allowing it to work, but that blob only supports some bcm4360 chips as there are 2 versions of it. In FreeBSD the bwn package only supports bcm43xx up to bcm4313 or some low number like that. The most elaborate Wi-Fi support I’ve seen involved a Linux VM client with the driver for the radio and passthru to the FreeBSD host. I do not remember more details than that. My personal preference is using a known BSD supported USB radio dongle since the more elaborate configurations tend to break regularly.

The official FreeBSD Pine64 images are, afaik, supported by a single maintainer with those devices. The only desktop useable image for the PBP is being cobbled together by a single person, with the web persona Sleepwalker. They have their hands busy in several projects using Rockchip based SBCs and infrequently update. There is a PBP thread in the official FreeBSD forum, and various SBC threads that have some movement regarding various ARM SBCs using Rockchip SoCs. Unfortunately open-source ARM SBC support is fragmented and spread across so many social media platforms, it requires creative and patient searches for slivers of info.

But in FreeBSD 14.0 the desktop installer also works on the arm version. Just do "pkg install desktop-installer" and execute it. Works fine!

Hi! I hope you celebrated the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024 in the appropriate manner. We ancients rely upon you youngsters to keep those traditions going. 😀 Joking aside, I hope that this year will bring you nothing but love and happiness. In my last comment, I mentioned that I hoped to venture into FreeBSD this year, and I’ll be making use of your previous videos, together with lots of questions to achieve my goals. Here is my current set up and what I want to do. Is it possible, please? My computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s with one internal SSD upon which is installed Linux Must as the sole operating system. I also have a separate Toshiba 500GB SSD in an enclosure, which has a USB connection. What I want to do (a) Install FreeBSD - on the Toshiba SSD (b) Be able to choose which SSD I boot from when powering up the computer. I have searched the internet and there are many answers. Some are very complex and probably above my level of expertise. Others are not as complex, but have replies which suggest the answer given will not work. So, is there a reasonably simple and foolproof way to achieve what I want to do, or should I forget it and try something else, please?
@RoboNuggie

In this instance I personally would download the FreeBSD ISO, burn it to a USB stick, boot from the USB stick and at the same time have the USB-SSD plugged in - using the installer menu, install FreeBSD to the SSD..., then unplug the USB stick, leaving the SSD plugged in, reboot booting from the USB SSD and you should have a FreeBSD install.... when you are finished, power down, remove usb-ssd and boot into Linux.... The trick is to choose the right SSD when installing FreeBSD.....
