Ranked 4th behind PostmarketOS, Alpine Linux, and NixOS, FreeBSD 14.1-Release CPU load is unbelievably high for a Operating System without a Desktop Environment and also seems to boot terribly slowly. This is unfortunate for an alternative to Linux.

high RAM usage is normal when using ZFS it does boot quite slowly though

@@alexandruc.5128 that makes sense and would explain the FreeBSD performance situation. Appreciate you taking the time to point that out and share. :)

i believe the slow booting is partly due to the FreeBSD init sytem vs Systemd in linux. Systemd can execute multiple tasks simultaneously while (I believe) Freebsd executes sequentially one task at a time. As much flack as systemd gets, it does seem to have its upsides.

@@JasonCarlile that would make sense. Alpine Linux uses OpenRC and they default to serial startup also. It makes a noticeable difference enabling parallel startup with OpenRC. So I could see it holding back the boot time performance on FreeBSD. Appreciate you taking the time to share this information with others. :)

I think there is a patch to fix high cpu usage in freebsd that happens with some hardware but im not a expert .Im a arch/freebsd i3wm user and i can tell that freebsd use more ram but less cpu for same task than linux arch or debian for sure.Freebsd is very solid and smooth

Are you seeing more ram per application process, or more ram used by system processes on FreeBSD?
