@@6iaZkMagW7EFs Depends on the Linux distro. OpenBSD can be installed by pressing enter until it reboots. If you want GUI it's somewhat comparable to the Arch install. But I wouldn't start a browser on any other system. Well, okay, maybe the Qubes or Kubes distro, where every application is run in a vm. But then why the hassle? On BSD you get a terminal and have to set it up yourself installing and configuring. You have to learn how to do it. Techy people are willing to spend that upfront time to learn it for the productivity gains of using something like linux / bsd but it's never gonna be marketable to the average user that way. Note! I recognised the use of the word "distributions", for example at 1:11. This is already where it goes wrong. These are BSD derived operating systems, not just distributions. These BSD derived systems these days are a just group of related systems, they don't share a single code base like Linux does. In fact there is actually only 1 Linux, which is only the name of the kernel, when used more correctly. That same kernel is used in combination with GNU software (the GNU/Linux distributions), with Android and others. Like explained in this video itself. By the way, what math fractal is that animation based on?

@@allenlark Alright, that is true. Android is an example of that. But still, eventually these modified versions of the kernel are also updated from the mainline kernel code, but just much less often. The licensing part of GNU GPL (v2 in this case) is straight up wrong, the GPL doesn't stop from making any software comercial, it stops from making software proprietary. And it has one exception that allows you to make a software proprietary as long as it's not being distributed. That's why many SaaS products use GPL code in their base because they're technically not distributing the software because it's on their private servers, that's why AGPL (later GNU AGPL) was created to remove that exception. Some examples of Commercial GPL software : Ardour, RHEL, etc.

I can tell you Red Hat (The distro) is not commercial. They sell support, not the software. You cannot sell anything with a GNU License but you can sell support for it. I was going to play with Red Hat at one time but they require you to sign up before you can even download it and that was a big no from me. They play a game of semantics; can't download till you sign up for support and you can't sign up for support without paying for it. The initial developer support is free though.

Apple MacOS is 100% FreeBSD all the way down, with two minor exceptions: the way it handles Virtual Memory and certain, limited to Apple, Kernel extensions. I've been a Linux user for decades but these days I am more favourably disposed to FreeBSD. Slower, more Software-Engineering based release cycle. It's perfect for robustness.
@tomjoad69932 жыл бұрын
Why do you say MacOS is 100% FreeBSD? I had a feeling it was more FreeBSD than people tried to make it out to be. I have read Apple's own literature where they mention what they used from FreeBSD, but it doesn't sound like they are saying it's basically all FreeBSD with a few minor exceptions. Where did you get your info about this?
@sofiaknyazeva2 жыл бұрын
macOS isn't 100% FreeBSD. That's just nothing more than a fact. Indeed, macOS contains a large number of FreeBSD codes, especially coreutils, however, both are extremely different. macOS kernel doesn't have any direct relationship with FreeBSD. And after decades of shipping the macOS code, it's extremely hard to believe, FreeBSD is 100% macOS.
@NonameEthereal Жыл бұрын
This is just as correct as claiming the PlayStation 4 is a FreeBSD system. As in: nope. They use more FreeBSD code than Windows does, but talking about differences in "kernel extensions" becomes hilariously incorrect when one remembers that MacOS does not use the FreeBSD kernel. It uses XNU (originally built on top of Mach for NextStep), which does use some parts common to the old 4.3 BSD and later FreeBSD. Userland was also quite non-FreeBSD for a good while, eg default shell being GNU Bash until the recent swap to Zsh. So on and so forth. Certain parts of the FreeBSD community like to exaggerate to such an extreme degree it becomes indistinguishable from simply making shit up.

No need for iwctl or wpa_supplicant or anything else. What a breath of fresh air. The problems started with graphical display when i tried to install kde. The default recommended partition scheme had the /usr partition set too small so the install failed. Annoying because the recommendation is for separate partitions and i trusted the suggested partition scheme. I did manage to get started with spectrwm display manager but it doesn't feel anywhere near as good as hyprland with wayland. Secondly, setting up neovim the way i like it seemed impossible. Several of the packages i wanted are not supported by openbsd. My final act was to downlod an arch iso (btw) and write it to a pen drive. I think I'm gonna switch back

It depends on the task. The only thing that immediately comes to mind for me was when I saw apache2 running on Linux vs FreeBSD and FreeBSD curb stomped Linux. However, there were other tasks where Linux was the very clear winner and other times where it was a wash. There has also been cases where FreeBSD can handle higher loads more efficiently. For me, I find the BSD tools available are more sensible, simple (in a good way), cohesive, well documented, and just as performant. BSDs are crap, especially on laptops. If you have a hybrid GPU system (a system that has an IGP for OS GUI and lightweight tasks plus a discrete GPU for serious tasks), BSDs are completely hopeless. The BSDs rarely work properly even on basic laptops, especially in terms of power management and wireless. Stop beating around the bush and actually use the OSes on the types of modern hardware most people have. 4 out of 5 times, the BSDs will disappoint you. The fact that Linux development is not vertically integrated has no bearing on end-users. It might affect you if you're developing your own Linux-based OS.

BSD struggles in key elements; software support like discord, games and even stuff that is just needlessly akward. Their is no reason OpenBSD can't have a gui Wi-Fi applet in the repos, other then some awkward ideological trait. By the time you got everything hooked up you're going to learn most of the stuff you use daily doesn't work at all or as well. The security while great for a server application for the user doesn't provide much other than superstitious traits like the login manager not indicating you're typing the password, not being able to switch to a different gui within the login manager and awkwardly. Like I said OpenBSD and other BSDs are great and I even have openBSD testing on my laptop, but I don't get any gain from it I don't get in debian be that in stability, security and speed. Debian archives the goals you mentioned of having a more coherent function and design and feels like a complete OS albeit not in the literal calibre BSD is. To sum up use case's as 'linux is better for beginners' is ignorant as I'm not a beginner, I've installed, used and configured open BSD, multiple linux distros and I don't see much gain in swapping it out on my main machine other than I can vaguely signal I use it. Even the devs of said bsds don't market it as much, FreeBSD devs use mac OS for the most part, openBSD advertise its usage more for servers for instance.
