I just want to say I really enjoy your attitude in the video. You seem to just have fun designing these things and that's the best part. I genuinely enjoy designing stuff in FreeCad whether it be for 3d printing or simply trying something new. I've taken CAD and architectural design classes but it was only high school level, and I feel I've gotten more from this video than I did in a year of drawing up designs and having them graded based on the mechanical drafting format.

I'm left with the feeling that this is not a tool to help but to illustrate you know how to use graphical drawing tools - I cannot feel that most of these drawings would have been made a lot faster by hand with the same flexibility as what FreeCAD produces? No basic assets like Doors and Windows? No walls in the 2D design? The archs and spacing that any architect would need the tools to help with are just "fyi" only as hard-coded drawings?
@RegisNdeTene3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you are right with your assessment. However as it was à new tool back in the days it was neccessary to establish some basics. Buy as you know with most things once you are familiar with à told you can do great things. As à 3d application all u need to work os design and all the other views can be extracted and that in of it self can save more drafting time by had. Especially when it concerns more complex things. Secondly not everyone comes to the industry with knowledge of hand drafting sot it helps to give à leap to those with difficulties.
@PL-VA3 жыл бұрын
@@RegisNdeTene I think you misunderstood or I didn't put it right. You spend a lot of time with intetrigete odd drawing features but in the end, the tool is not helping to see what fits where - it's just a drawing composed of a bunch of drawings that you assume are all in the same aspect/scale. Being able to tell "I want this 50cm from the the door frame" isn't really possible this way. I looked at the current version and found your descriptions weren't too far off where things are today. And my comment was simply to state, that I don't feel this helps anyone design/architect anything - it seems more a proof of concept for doing things graphical.

When I make a copy of compound objects, the shapes inside are the same as in the original-for example, Rectangle01 in Compound01 and in Compound02. This is why, when I delete the shapes inside the compound objects, it throws an error and doesn’t work as intended.
@RegisNdeTene2 ай бұрын
Yes this behaviour is normal and is expected. This is so that when you update the elements inside that compound, it should update everywhere else. And this way is very useful in many other things. So what you can do is also make a copy of the objects inside that compound and link them to the new compound, that way what ever you do It will not affect the original compound. Another thing you could is select the compound and make a simple shape from it. It will create a shape that is completely independent and not have any underlying elements tied to it. If I have understood your question well and have replied you, let me know.

@RegisNdeTene6 жыл бұрын
Hello @crazy Joe, thanks for your reply, and no one who watches Freecad or has an interest in Freecad is a dummy ;-), As for your comment to "KEEP it simple" request, indeed you are right, my videos are a bit dense but they were done so for a reason as Freecad is a relatively new program and not well exposed for people to get a first hand well rounded experience of it's current abilities and funcationalities in a way that is practical to the a proffessional and amateur alike, a certain volume of quality information had to be provided for those who really needed this material and can afford to dig in this deep. Currently i'm quite caught up with a few other projects i'm working on but i'm willing to consider your request if we can communicate in a way that allows me to understand the direction of what you want so I can create a plan of how to acheive such. In the mean time if you are so eager and can't wait, there are quite enough basic and quality material I can also point you to should you need to create specific projects. Once again thanks, and I look forward for your reply. Much regards Joe.

HI Regis, You did an amazing job, putting this together, cudos to you. I appreciate the effort you put in completing these videos. However I found it difficult to follow as the resolution on the video was poor to say the least. This creates a problem when trying to follow your work flow as it is blury. Additionally you should update the version as it is now up to 0.21 and do one for Mac as the tool buttons are located differently. It would be a great boon to the hard work you put in.. thanks in advance..
@RegisNdeTene Жыл бұрын
hello @JonApple01, thank you for your consice message. Indeed most of the comments you pointed out are true since at the time i was new to this and also experimenting trying to push as much useful material out. It is also true that Freecad has known some most notable improvements since my last videos and so the videos require some updates. Right now my challenge is gathering enough resources to be able to put together a good set of working hardware (and if you mention mac, then mac hardware aswell). When working at fore front of tech, things do often break and so there is a constant need to invest in back up of systems and hardware, and have fall over and failover systems to support the main infrastructure. Currently that has been my main challenge when it comes to moving this channel forward in the most consistent way possible. I keep on collecting all the comments, opinions, remarks made so that should i be able to put things together, i'll be able to have a guided direction based on some of the comments. Once again I appreciation your comments as they are of value to make things better and without which I would not have a single clue of what makes this works beneficial to others and how to improve it.

I've got a couple issues with comparison here. I'm using Version 0.21.2 so maybe there's a difference since this video. First, I cannot get the grid to show up beyond the little tiny space that started. For example: it was .39" square when I started, I made a rectangle 1200" (100ft) and the grid disappears. Also, I couldn't get it to let me click and drag to center. I found the icon at the top to fit all and that's the only way I can get it centered up. I cannot click and move around. I've tried going between Blender and CAD mode, and nothing works.

Hello Wanderer Fux, to manipulate your grid size, go to the "Edit" menu --> "preference" --> "Draft' option --> 'grid and snapping' tab and you should see the grid spacing that you change change, currently mine is at 1000 mm for the grid spacing, so basically 1m, and the grid size is 100 lines. The theme I use is the theme of the operating system. So if you are on Linux mint like me, it easy, just change the theme of your operating system and freecad should automatically acquire those colors. At minute 54:56 , the dividing lines on the sofas, mine end up hidden underneath the rectangles and minute 1:04:32 starting to do the sink, the smaller rectangle will only go underneath the larger and becomes hidden. Thanks
@RegisNdeTene6 жыл бұрын
I see what you are referring to indeed. There are no easy answers for that yet as the ability to bring behind and in front have not been added. So one must find creative ways to play with it. Have you tried to use the sketch work bench and sketch on the rectangle surface you want? That allows to select the face on which we want to draw and that leaves the sketch on the surface. Also you can convert the sketches to d wires as well and see if the new dwire stays on your sketch. Also what about the option of combining them into a group object? and see how it automatically rearranges your work. Let me know what you've tried.

I see, well I think what's happening is that when ever you assign a working plane on the surface of an object, the working plane moves to that object. This is useful especially if you have angled planes you want to work on. So just draw a face and the assign the work plane to that face and you should see it move to reposition to that face.

@@Abc-sl1nf grab a rectangle from the draft tools and draw either a rectangle or a circle, or any 2d shape that will generate a face. or it can be even the face of an object you select and then asign a work plane face to it. one you draw the face, or select a face from an existing object, then assign the workplane to that face. and let me know what happens.

Have you come across any bugs yet that have stopped you from working with FreeCAD?
@RegisNdeTene7 жыл бұрын
I do notice a few bugs once in a while that do annoy me, however if it's a minor bug, i'll find a way around, if it is a big deal, i'll make a request in the forum. I must admit though, that these past year's worth of work I haven't found any significant bug that caused me to stop working. The thing that typically frustrates me are speed issues. For example if you come accross a bug, and that bug goes into an endless compute, well it will freeze your memory and resuming that file will simply lead you to the same problem. But experience allows you to better manage, so let's say the videos are mostly what i've found out to be the best ways of moving around freecad to avoid getting stuck. Now I mostly spend my time in the architecture world of freecad. So other workbenches that also in development can possibly have bugs in them. I hope this isn't too much ranting. but what kind of bug are you running into that is leading you to stop working in Freecad?

Regis Nde Tene I haven't used it yet. I am a SolidWorks guy but to buy a copy costs an arm and a leg. I have been looking for a cheaper alternative. I just wanted someone's opinion.
@RegisNdeTene7 жыл бұрын
+TheMeJustMe75 I have modelled with inventor in the past. Not sure how it compares with solid works. Overtime I have found freecad can handle most jobs. Not super large scale projects simply because of less funding obviously. But if a serious company invested a fraction of what they afford on monthly commercial software's alternatives, that will be enough to get enough programmers working on it. In the mean time I highly encourage you to speak of your bugs in the forum. Someone there certainly has a clue how to fix it. I hope my opinion helps
@TheMeJustMe757 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input! I am in the process of putting together a small company, mainly me. I have a guy that is a machinist who will actually be making the things I design. I am also getting into 3D printing for some of my designs. SolidWorks, Inventor and other high end softwares just aren't affordable at this time. I am going to be buying IntellaCAD PE Plus just because it is much like AutoCAD and includes 2D and 3D options but at a much more affordable price point. What interests me in FreeCAD is that is functions and looks very much like SolidWorks. Most of the mechanical design stuff will be pretty straight forward in the beginning. Really, it will depend on who requests something. Again, thanks for your input and I look forward to getting started with FreeCAD. I will keep watching your videos!

Sadly, this video begins with some VERY HUGE assumptions and ends without helping at all. 1. There is nothing to help set up the equivalent of say.. an 8" x 10" drawing Area on which to draw our floorplan. 2. Nothing to help move the origin of the drawing to ... I don't know... maybe near the lower left corner of our drawing area. 3. No instruction whatsover about linewidth, Automatic wall thickness, doors, windows... This is a floorplanner isn't it? 4. No hint even of how one might extrude the walls up from the floor toward the top of the rooms... 5. No way to set the planned lengths of anything related to the Drawing area before they are created... and 6. No hint as to what specific mode *anything* should be set to before the first line is entered on the drawing area. 7. Soo... By guess and by gosh, I put lines on a 'drawing area' only to find out they were USELESS to depict a floor plan. 8. Obviously I thought drawing the basic elements of a floor plan would happen using the long row of tools but not. 9. A rectangle is just a rectangle and will never act as a wall, door or window.... Oh well. I'll try to find something more basic. Any help is ACTUALLY creating a floor plan from scratch using FreeCAD will be MUCH appreciated.

This is awful! He doesn't even understand what sort of user the tutorial is aimed at. It might be an advanced user who is new to architecture, an advanced architect who is new to freecad. Neither of them needs to be shown "Save As" dialog and how to reshuffle your toolbars. Take me for example, as soon as I am shown a blueprint that is neither a box nor wiring diagram, I have but one question "what is it?" and what answer is given here? "It is a "section"! What is section? Where can it be found in real life? Is it in the wall? Is it on the ground or beneath the roof? And then more epithets, more distractions on toolbars and such. And why the f.. all these CAD users hate people with tablets and smartphones? Why can't you use minimal screen resolution like 768p? Do you not understand that moct of the time nothing happens on 70% of your FullHD desktop and we have to focus in the small area around File menu and Properties inspector table, that has scrolling no matter how high your screen resolution is.
