Create repeating patterns around a curved or arc surface in FreeCAD by scaling and tracing part of a reference image / photograph and seamlessly repeating that pattern and wrapping it around a curved surface. This simple tutorial will take you through the process step by step showing you a number of workflows utilising both the curves and lattice 2 workbenches.
This workflow is ideal for crating craft rollers for clay patterning, paint rollers and tyre treads.

That's made my life soooo much easier. I'm beginning to think your a mind reader and can hear our screams of frustration in doing things the hard way.

I knew you was going to say that 😂. It's getting a bit spooky how many times people have said they was looking for a way to do something and then a few days later I release a video on it. I'm starting to frighten myself (maybe I should start doing the lottery lol)

Excellent video as always, Mango! I found that I didn't even need to move the tread pattern off the scaffold sketch for a perfect pattern. I'm going to have to go through your lattice series, I guess, because this workbench seems super powerful.

Thank you. It's is a great workbench. There is still so much in there I need to go through as the documentation is pretty sparse so still researching and learning about the workbench so that series is still being added to though it looks like it's stopped. Glad you enjoyed.

Very nice! Thanks so much for doing this. Now I need to decide how I wish to build the main framework of tire and apply this video.

Thanks Mango. With version 0.21.1 I got up to Image WB. Seems like it has been removed. What else can you recommend ? In the end I went to draft and import image. My image was not really patterned OK so I just copied the pattern on screen. Worked out fine. Then transform, rotate and scaled it via the parameters. Excellent video - thanks. Quite tricky though.

Glad you enjoyed the video. So the workbench was removed for a different way of importing and scaling reference images. I created a video that explains the new method, it's an improvement on the image workbench Here's the link to the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZnbdXSdqNCWfqM And thank you for taking the time in sharing what you did. Always helpful. I will update the description of this video to point future viewers towards the video. Thanks once again.

Would this work on the inner surface of the tube for grease grooves? Of course it would create a rectangular groove cross-section. How could you create a trapezoidal groove cross-section subtracting outward from the inner surface of the tube? I have tried using a helix with the pitch set to 2 times the cylinder height so that each groove is only 180 degrees of the cylinder. With such a high pitch helix, the trapezoidal sketch profile on the XY plane gets distorted badly in the sweep. It seams to me that you would need a sketch plane that is normal to the endpoint of the helix. I do not know how to establish this local coordinate system sketch plane.

I have a problem on 17:45. The recompute of sketch 2 does not work (V 0 20 Build 2). I made an own example where I had no problems by adding additive sketches. And using B-Splines for the sketches is possible ... but at the end I can not cut out off the cylinder.

I'm assuming this same concept can be used on a flat surface for a different type of of form/mold, correct?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Жыл бұрын
Not exactly the same, you don't bother with the sketch on surface in the curves workbench and use a standard extrude in the part workbench on the lattice object. I have a number of tutorials for lattice workbench in a playlist where you can see how the lattice workbench can be used if that helps.

@@MangoJellySolutions Thank you so much!! I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to do this on a flat surface for another hobby. I was going to look more into the lattice workbench as I can see some artsy uses for this same hobby that I can share with friends.
