Күн бұрын

Understanding how Datum Planes and Datum Lines work together and can be used in Grooves and Revolves in FreeCAD 0.19 and above. We will use datum lines for reference axis and datum planes to create geometry to surfaces especially awkward shaped surfaces such as curves. We will be using the part design workbench and adding datum planes and lines to planner and non planner surfaces. We learn how the attachment modes work with edges, faces and vertexes. We understand how we can change the location and attachment of the datum objects. We will then move onto creating grooves and revolves and how to use them with the datum objects.

Attaching a datum plane to a face, and then start a sketch on that datum plane, wouldn't that bring you into the topological naming problem as soon as that face gets renamed if previous stages alters the number of faces?

Very interesting, but the hole drilling part beginning at 19:43 seems very strange to me, because you selected to move the datum-plane in the "Z" direction, but the Coordinate-System arrow shows that you moved the plane in the 'Y' direction. I'm very confused there. But not only because of that, but also why it does make the hole when you move the datum-plane away from the hole that you want to drill, and not by moving the plane towards where the hole should be🤨 I don't get it, and that Is unfortunately pretty often the case for me in this Software. It's just not intuitive at all imho.

Is that Mapping function available on X-Y (etc) planes like where you created the initial sketch? (That would have fixed the negative direction hole issue I was mentioning on the offset video, unless that would have flipped the offset tracing.)

It's is available on the sketch as well, I am going to have a look back through the comments to remind myself. Sorry I get quite a few.

do you know if its possible to draw a line in sketch, and then the angle in degrees pops up, whether you can "lock" a certain angle. In inventor you can use TAB to switch to the angle and then you can say well 45' TAB again and then draw the line to the length you want. you can also just put a line point somewhere and then just fill in the length of the line and the angle and its draws it. I have some major issues in FREECAD to just simply sketch things. Points of 2 lines very close together do not snap on and connect with each other. If I draw a sketch on an existing model it does not wanna extrude. its just such simple basic things that are a complete headache in Freecad that just work in other CAD pograms.

At 8:18 you said "we may have to jut this sketch out slightly" but ultimately didn't. Had that been necessary how would you have done it, given that the sketch is attached to the external geometry line?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes sorry I should of really covered that. I would of had to change my constraints against that line to offset it with a distance constraint against the top or bottom import vertex. An example of when you would u have to do this is if the shape of your body is of such that a pocket or groove will cause a void in the body which splits it in two sepreste pieces which is not supported in the part design (but is in the part workbench). In this instance we are fine. If theere was a ridge in the middle of the cylinder then that ridge would of been disconnected creating a multipart single body and causing an error.

20:02 you move the plane in Z axis but I don't understand why it isn't X or Y. shouldn't Z move it to the TOP or BOTTOM? Your view cube shows moving in Z is towards REAR.

It's all to do with local and global co-ordinates. When you attach a sketch, datum plane etc you are attaching it to the base object but it still keeps its co-ordinate system. This is know as local co-ordinates. So with a sketch attached to the face the Z axis will always be normal to the sketch. It can get confusing and I am creating a video regarding it.

Can one use the datum to add a curve to the profile of letters?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions 2 жыл бұрын
So are you looking to say attach a datum plane to the text and sketch a profile on the plane to sweep it around the text like you was creating, say, a neon light tube? In that case yes. I did something similar a while back....actually, I don't think I ever released that video.
@MangoJellySolutions

Or is this to get around filleting issues with a subtractive sweep?
@jiritichy6855

@4:41 it appears that if you define the Datum plane "Normal to the edge" it means that the center of the defined Datum plane was moved to the end of the edge, even though there is no preview of that change and the plane still looks like it is at the center of the cylinder. That is quite confusing. It would be much more clear, if the local LCS axes were visible and reacting with preview to any change you make in Attachment Mode table, before executing... Also: @~12:36 using datum line in a Hostory tree's previous command(grove) runs counterintuitive to usual History tree function of dependency. You should not be able to define or rather execute a command using geometry, which was defines later, I could see more logical to define the datum line and then move it in History tree before the Grove command and then execute the Groove command. It would be more in line with usual logic.
